It was. Not only were the visual effects mindblowing for a 1999 movie, but back then if you'd talk about parallel universes or the idea that we might live in a computer simulation, they would've probably locked you in a mental institution. While today these things are plausible and are beeing investigated by top scientists.

It bears mentioning the actors in the Bourne movies (at least the first one) did actually learn how to fight. You can see it in some behind the scenes stuff. But this style is definitely much cooler. Too bad the Wachowskis never made another good movie.

As a life long fan of The Matrix, and after a very long period of depression and just all around mental health issues, the line, "he's beginning to believe" is really resonating with me. Despite what the oracle said, the belief Morpheus and Trinity had in Neo made him believe in himself. Neo wasn't 'the one', he chose to be the one. And the belief of a few loyal people helped him become the one. I feel like I am beginning to believe.
@sheldoman

Neo is the One. He is the anomaly in the program running the matrix, technically he is the bug/code error in the system. Imagine this, divide 10 by 3. It's 3.333 to infinity. Now multiply that by 3. It's 9.9999 to infinity. Whereas it should be 10, not 9.9999 to infinity. Where is the anomaly ? Once you subtract both the numbers, you shall get 0.00 ♾️ and then a 1. Like 0.000...001. That 1 is the anomaly, like a code error, that "ONE" is "NEO", an anagram of ONE.

reymart christian Cruz The Matrixis one of those films you watch every year and you never get bored of it. The Algorithm (Story) reveals a lot of hidden meanings either a (Religious, political or a moral agenda) and it has a lot of occultic symbolism, secrets, reality, truth in soo many ways its only hidden when we don't watch it properly. Watch 'The Matrix Decoded' you'll be impressed with more of the info. 2 hour long video.

I prefer long and clear fight scenes more than anything. I believe the kung fu moves are to make the battle more entertaining. No one would want to see them only grabbing themselves like jiu jitsu it's just slow and boring. Also, they have super human abilities, so it makes sense for them to move that fast I guess.

The opening shows this isn’t a normal world, the training simulation shows how good a fighter Morpheus is and Neo has potential, the basement scene shows even a extraordinary fighter like Morpheus is outmatched by the dangerous Smith/machines, making the subway fight all the more rewarding for Neo to finally rise up and win

For some reason I feel as if it was supposed to be taken as an insult. Because being empty sounds impossible and counter intuitive. Maybe the buddhist were more referring to peace than emptiness. A kind of calm, steady flow despite having attachments because at anytime you can let them go if need be or correct them. This would be more of an accomplishment to achieve in my mind than what would amount to simply running away from the problem and acting like it doesnt exist. So perhaps smith was actually insulting Neo by saying he is empty. As to imply he is still empty. This is something Neo already knows but he is beginning to correct it. But he calls smith out on his own as well. Which angers him as it seems smith also seems to know how much of a negative that is. Neither of them are at peace and they both acknowledged that in those two simple lines. Smith wants what Neo wants essentially. To be the One. To achieve true peace. And perhaps this is why he really will enjoy beating Mr Anderson. Which means he has acknowledged at that moment that Neo has the capacity to achieve his same goal before he does. Perhaps this is why he asks later why does he keep on fighting when he should just give up. As smith seems to not have some crucial element apart of human consciousness to achieve his goal and therefore cant comprehend Neo's behavior. He is basically saying why are you so much better than I am. As if it isn't fair.

They‘re not existent, for they are currently living in a dream world which doesn‘t allow existence. Therefore, they‘re both not fully existent people who are living in that moment. They‘re empty as well on the inside as on the outside.

@@lukase3600 Really mate? Can't take a joke? As for your reasoning, there's some gaps. For one, the Matrix is real (in the movie). Agent Smith may not be a real person - that doesn't mean he isn't real. He's as real as you Firewall in your computer. The Matrix just makes him blend in like a human. And although Neo's appearance is his digital self when inside the Matrix (like a virus, in a way), he was a human bred by the machines and is therefore just as real as the machine. But ultimately, this lines up with the quote of the movie, as Morpheus said. "What is real?" Or should I say "What is empty?"

It seems like the action scenes in matrix 1 are just the result of a group of ludicrously talented people working at their absolute A game, who happened to be brought together at the perfect time to produce something magic. Folks like the chap who responded before me seem to be under the impression that a scene like this is “easy”, as if Hollywood just needs to try a little bit harder. @@Ashonti_ixv I guess so. Apparently they considered it because parts of it are essentially “unfinished”, according to comments I’ve read from the director. But then these films are enormous undertakings that involve lots of super complicated deadlines. I highly doubt it’s possible to just hit the brakes to fix things. Re-shoots are notoriously expensive, and unless there were capable people ready to be parachuted in, perhaps it wasn’t even guaranteed that M4’s action could be improved? My point is; film projects like this are insanely tough. Absolutely insane. And the success of M1’s action and the relative failure of M4’s action really can’t be boiled down to,”Hollywood just needs to try harder!” You can’t throw money to get A+ craft

In my opinion, this is EASILY the best fight in all of the trilogy, and one of the best fight scenes ever made in its own right. Brutal, desperate, stylish, kinetic, constantly shifting the balance of power; this is what every movie fight should be like. (Not talking about the kung-fu, but the mood and editing) It's beyond me how the makers of this fight could make such boring, hum-drum fight scenes such as the Chateau fight in the next one.

The Chateau fight was arguably more stylish and kinetic. What makes this (and any) fight great is first of all that the fighting is merely a tool for telling the audience about the character(s). Notice how the character Neo at the beginning of the fight is not the same as Neo at the end. "He's beginning to believe" sums it up nicely. This is the most important thing, but also good is when fights have emotional content. The audience has real reason to think the agents are practically invincible and that Neo can't win, and that tension makes us emotionally invested in the fight. The reason the Chateau feels boring is there's no character development, no emotional content, never for a second do we think Neo might lose. It's as if the director looked at the script and said "ok, the movie is a little flat around here so we should add some kind of fight sceen here."

What I find most interesting about this battle is the fact that Neo’s performance in this fight is based on his unshakable belief that he is in fact the One. Through all of the kicks, punches, slams, and combos he endured during this fight he has to maintain that belief in himself. Smith slams him against a wall several times and mixes him up with his incredible superhuman strength and any normal person would take a few of those punches and eventually be like “ok this is impossible there’s no way I can win” and then that’s right when they lose, because your abilities in the matrix are based entirely on your belief of them. Neo doesn’t buckle once through this entire ass whooping. Not when he gets mega sonic gut punched a million times in the stomach. Not when he gets smashed into the wall against the train tunnel, and not when he’s getting strangled and seconds away from being run over by a train, one of the most violent and scary ways to die. And you can tell the way that the cruel and aggressive way that Smith is fighting is to inflict mental damage, and let Neo soak in the inevitable hopelessness of his situation. The whole time and even when death seems imminent, he has to know, believe and maintain “I can do this beat this agent in a fight.” Then when he finally truly begins to believe at the very end, he realizes he doesn’t even have to fight these agents to destroy. This scene tells a story and dramatically develops Neo’s character with minimal dialogue and under the guise of a fight. I just think that some incredible writing on the part of the wachiwskis

Well said and written @mujiha. You have read quite a lot into this fight scene but what you say makes sense. The belief that there is no spoon is probably running through his mind at this point too. This Is my favorite fight from the series. The main reason? The stakes. At this point, Neo Is still very vulnerable. Sure he Is a badass and did some impressive things already, but you can feel he barely made it, since he's still not The One nor on equal footing with an Agent. The score, the choreography, the fact he gets hit as much or even more than he hits Smith, being on the verge of losing at any point. This, my friend, Is action perfection. A fight that can go either way.

Boy, I was 11 years old when this came out in the theatre. Still looks as good as I remember it, really hasn't aged, unlike me. This is why practical effects are better than CGI because it doesn't age.

@@philoconnell4271 the matrix makes use of cgi where reasonable. Much of the movies stunts are practical ie wire effects, hand to hand combat, etc. Its not like large scale cgi use (any marvel movie) where the entire picture looks like a video game

The irony here is that the shot just before they fight has more emotional resonance than most movies today. People forget that what makes this fight amazing and so cathartic is the arc itself that led to this. Neo is an average joe thrust into a bigger world he can barely comprehend and as the story progresses he grows from a faithless average joe to a man of some faith fighting the very system itself that once enslaved him. People forget that and usually just shut off their brains for movies. It’s sad that this action movie from 20 years ago has more substance than even the greatest blockbusters of today.

They had Hong Kong director and fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping for the 3 Matrix movies to choreograph, direct the fight scenes and intentionally designed distinctive fighting styles for each character. That includes taking Reeves' neck and spinal injuries and Weaving's hip injury into account when coming up with their fighting styles. They did tell him what they wanted to happen though, Yuen simply had the freedom as to how to go about it. I think it's even more impressive when you think of how production gets shut down for a period of time, when a lead actor gets injured.

I feel like when this film first came out, people just thought it was a cool sci-fi action flick, but as time went on, they began to realize how powerful this movie is and the message of it. This has to be one of the best aged movies of all time. It gets better over time and I don't think there are many aspects of the film that are out of date.

The problem with the trilogy is the bad guys were never any more menacing than Agent Smith was in this first film. Once you add all the superpowers and stuff it takes the suspense away, Neo is basically god/superman and the agents and bad guys are actually the ones in danger in the sequel.

Ya but there’s still extreme stakes that matter. The upgrade is vampires/20vs.1 with weapons, and a couple hundred smiths etc. Upgraded fights aside, in the real world it’s dinky ships that can use an emp - and then need to charge for like an hour… how r u going to set people free on the surface/shut down the matrix, and win against a machine party that covers the entire planet - compared to ur one underground little city? Matrix could’ve been a solo film, but I enjoyed the trilogy story. I liked the Star Wars prequels as well - for the sword choreography. Staff vs. 2 sabers - all skilled fighters (darth maul vs quigon & obiwan) Neo’s weapons fight scene in the marovingian mansion was similar.
