Step inside the pitch meeting that led to The Matrix Revolutions!
Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Screenrant
The Matrix was one of the most revolutionary movies of all time and influenced a whole generation of action movies with its awesome visual effects and storytelling. Naturally its massive success led to some sequels: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions… Which are also movies!
The third film in the “trilogy” definitely raises some questions. Like did anyone actually want to see Neo, The Chosen One, stuck in a train station for 25 minutes? What’s up with all the real-world superpowers that Neo and Agent Smith have? How exactly do program make babies? Why are the machines using humans as batteries when the sun is accessible? Who are we supposed to care about in the Zion battle and why do both the machines and humans choose such impractical fighting styles?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to The Matrix Revolutions! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

@@mikemgmail I'm pretty sure that child processes don't need to do the same thing as the parent, so it won't always be a cloned process. Like having parallel threads for rendering to screen and taking input being children of the main program. Then again, I've never really paid too much attention to terminology and just wrote code, so I may have gotten a few things mixed up there.

@Jimbo Bimbo - In C, the parent would spawn the child, and eventually handle the child's end state. (It's been many years, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details now.) However, if the parent dies by error or being killed, the child would then be an orphan process.

Honestly, I thought it described the first film as well. An incoherent mess of a story, badly broken world-building (even if you give them a pass on that idiotic "battery" switch by the studio), clumsy retreads of sophomore-grade philosophy and pop-psychology self-actualization nonsense, and an ending devoid of any consequential theme. Proyas' /Dark City/, to name only one example, is a much better B-movie realization of the paranoid solipsism and oppositional thinking that /The Matrix/ aimed at.

The whoopsie about neural networks -> batteries was just perfect. What were they thinking? Even if they dumbed it down to saying "using human brains as computers" it would have made so much more sense than batteries, which built a trilogy's entire universe on a nonsensical premise.

oh good ol' hollywood bigshot ass-cracks with a barely functioning brain....
@secondsein7749
@secondsein7749 4 жыл бұрын
It's sort of understandable though. At the time, the producers likely think that the audience wouldn't be able to grasp the idea of neural network than batteries. Not to mention that neural network itself has its own can of worms. Like why would a machine that can house sentient AI and create convincing simulations ever need the by that time, inferior human brain? And what kind of back story that could lead to that? The battery idea was much simpler and easier to digest at the time.
@secondsein7749
@secondsein7749 4 жыл бұрын
@Ryanator you can't assume everyone that watch Matrix watch Star Trek. The reality is that the market audience for both stories are different. Star Trek's is a niche market that is used to complex concepts while the Matrix is the opposite. Then there's the perception and accessibility. Star Trek is at the time considered by many average movie goers as nerdy stuff so they aren't likely to watch. Not to mention that to them, even if they want to get into it, they have to do lots of 'homework', ie watching tons of Star Trek material, making it a daunting task. Meanwhile the Matrix has less of the nerdy perception and much easier to access.
@secondsein7749
@secondsein7749 4 жыл бұрын
@Ryanator just because both are sci-fi doesn't mean that they will have the same reception in everything. There are tons of other differences such as medium. Films tend to have higher market audience than shows and because of shorter length, it is more accessible to the wider market. Just because you experience something doesn't make it that the definite example for the whole. Because if that's the case, then others would experience the same thing as you without fail. But that's not what happen isn't it? I've met people that watched Matrix but doesn't know much about Star Trek. Oh but they do know and watch Star Wars. I wonder why? Ah speaking of that, does that mean people that watch Star Wars watch Star Trek as well? Both are sci-fi and quite similar. The answer is no. Go ahead and ask even the casuals of Star Wars fan, whether or not they have watched an episode of Star Trek, and the likely answer you'll get is that "Nope but I watched the JJ films though". Apple and oranges. Just because both are fruit doesn't mean they can be subject to the same treatment.

@@secondsein7749 I think of it more as that mankind finally created AI using a vast supercomputer that cost a trillion dollars to build and years of effort from all of the semiconductor manufacturers of the world and takes a giant building to house. This entity becomes self-aware, then realizes that human brains can be self aware at a billionth the cost and a millionth the size, so it starts expanding itself with human brains. i.e. humans manage to build an AI but the hardware is so big and expensive that it's inferior to just organically grown brain matter from a cost/benefit analysis, so the computer takes what works best.

I remember when they used to try (and often fail) to create the visual that fit the plot. Now the CGI crew comes up with a new visual effect that they can pull off, and they enslave the plot to the visual. This is how I feel about the prequel trilogy in Star Wars. Lucas has a "vision" and all else is contrived to set up the fight scene on the lava planet. Then when they're done with gravity-defying feats, the fight is decided on the fact that one of the characters happens to be standing on a low hill, which suddenly is "the high ground," after they've literally been FLYING on rocks, using the Force. I'll remember that ridiculous "I have the high ground!" line to my dying day.
