This did make me realize the big difference between Maud and Mud, for Pinkie. Maud stays quiet about things for Pinkies sake, or even enjoys them out of her liking Pinkie's happiness. Mud Briar not only does not do that but will never hesitate to state exactly what is on his mind/ will point out if something is not exactly correct.
@alexmalcolm63096 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Pinkie dislikes Mud Briar as opposed to Maud is that she grew up with the latter. She's grown used to Maud's strangeness and mannerisms to the point where she doesn't notice anymore. On the other hand Briar is the only other pony we've seen with similar behavior, so Pinkie's never had to deal with anyone else like that.
@jersy64066 жыл бұрын
However, Mud Briar is kind of annoying in a way Maud isn't. Maud is weird, too but never in a way that gets in the way of someone or annoys someone intentionally I still think he's totally entertaining, but I kind of agree with Pinkie ^^

@@jersy6406 I don’t really believe anything he was doing was intentionally rude. It can come across that way, but honestly he just seems more autistic than rude. He cares a lot about proper communication and saying exactly what he wants to say, which is something I can relate to a lot. It’s not too different than Applejack’s honestly except without the social awareness someone like Applejack clearly has to a much greater extent than the much more reserved Mudbriar.

One thing my friend pointed out about this episode. The "Pinkie doesn't know Maud as well as she thinks she does and Maud likes the effort Pinkie puts in more than anything" could be seen as being foreshadowed all the way back in season 4. At the end of Maud Pie, this exchange happens after Pinkie gives her the candy necklace. Pinkie Pie: Try not to eat all the candy before you leave! Twilight Sparkle: Are those all the necklaces Pinkie Pie sent you? Maud Pie: Mm-hm. Twilight Sparkle: You haven't eaten any of them? Maud Pie: I don't really like candy. But I do love Pinkie Pie.

I think generally it was made clear that Pinky doesn't give a fuck about what Maud is actually like. I feel like Piny has a fantasy version of her sister she adores, more an image she sees but she clearly disregards the reality. Because obviously if any Pony but Maud had made that comedy act at the beginning she would have found it as stupid as all the others ponies, if it hadn't been her sister she wouldn't have EVER befriended her because she would have seen Maud the way she is. But pinky sees her sister as just as funny and talkative and sweet as she herself is, even if this is NOT the reality. This REALY disturbs me -.-

Blissy likes Fruits Basket. See, this is why we're friends. :) I liked this episode. (of course I would, it's Pinkie Pie) but a part of me feels like the characters who learn the lessons go OTT and that becomes distracting from the lesson at hand a little, especially when Pinkie is the one learning the lesson. She has no medium level. So it was actually nice to see that she made such an effort to get to know Mud Briar, BUT also see Mud Briar making an affort as well. :) I can kind of relate to this with my siblings both being married and having to get to know their spouses over the years. :) It takes a lot of effort but it is so worth it. :)

Anyway yeah I was laughing throughout the episode because Mudbriar reminded me of myself. I have the tendency to correct people, however I have gotten better over the years. Man though was I bad when I was younger lol. Now I do recall when my younger brother met his current wife, it was a huge shock to the whole family because she was the first (and only) person he dated because before that he was never interested in women in that way. For one, he was in the Air Force at the time (she was too) and it was literally an out of the blue situation because we called him one day and asked him what he was doing. Well technically (yes I am doing this lol), I called him first and told him what we were doing and asked him what he was doing. His next words stunned me, but in a good way, "I am with my girlfriend." I literally shouted, "YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND!?" My mom then demanded the phone lol. It was a shock for me especially because I always remembered my brother when he was 12 saying he'd never get married because he wanted to be like our uncle (who was single at the time, but then he gets married at some point lol). So I was in a state of shock for a long time, even after they got married. It was until I became an aunt that the shock finally died down lol. They just had their 10th wedding anniversary this year with 3 kids.

Now that I hear the moral described the way Doc Wolf described it, it seems like a rehashing of the moral from the episode "Keep Calm and Flutter On" where Fluttershy reforms Discord. Also, the way Maud went along with Pinkie's surprise parties to avoid hurting Pinkie's feelings reminds me of how Dash didn't want to tell Pinkie that she doesn't like pies. Both went along with things they didn't like and kept up a facade because they didn't want to hurt Pinkie's feelings.

@Sweetie - Not sure if it's been said in the comments already, but Twilight is a unicorn in the first few seconds because that snippet of the intro is supposed to represent her first arriving in Ponyville-- when she "used to wonder what friendship could be". It's not an animation error that needs fixed, it's a deliberate artistic choice for storytelling purposes. (Me @ Myself: Oh no is this gonna come off as mean and know-it-all-y? Speaking of the new opening. Something that jumped out at me is the geography shown in the opening means the new ending photograph should be impossible. It's a shot of the front of the school with the new students and teachers on a platform in between the photographer and the school. But if you look at the opening, the path across the water to the front doors of the school ends immediately at the base of Twilight's castle. We see Twilight and Starlight have to make a hard right from the base of the castle to access the path. This means from the perspective of the photo, the students and staff should be embedded in the wall at the base of the castle, and the photographer would probably be directly below the center of the castle.

Maud and Mud Brier both have Asperger syndrome, of the autistic spectrum the entire episode was a demonstration of all the quirks they have because of it. Neither can read non verbal queues or body language from the people around it and as followed can't properly express them. This greatly affects it affects their interactions, behavior or rather the lack of the expected reactions or idiosyncrasies that regular people just take for granted and interpret their absence from Brier or Maud it as a signs of disrespect or insincerity on their part. That was best demonstrated by Maud on the comedy stance act, in the beginning of the episode where she couldn't show properly the queues to show that her content was meant sarcastic or humorers in any obvious way for most and Pinky had to tell everyone in the room that it was meat as a joke and not just facts or opinions and they finally all realized the meaning of her words, and it wasn't just because of her monotone voice. Brier's seemingly literal interpretation of Pinkies words and action wasn't but because he missed the their meaning, or subtext, related and her tires to compensate for his lack of understanding of subtitles by using precise technical words to avoid any ambiguities in his meaning and intentions and avoids using unwieldy (for him at least) emotional meaning related words and 'sticks' to factual neutral wording, which explain partly his dull monotone voice. The repetitive use of certain the words 'technically' is a compulsion on Brier's part and is meant as an interjection shows his detail oriented mind. Pinky's reactions were understandable and perfectly and perfectly represent the misinterpretation that often happen with most people in their first initial impression of a person with Asperger syndrome and how it taints their whole perceptions in subsequent interactions, judging them in their minds that their behavior is rude when it was, in reality just a misunderstanding. And even When Pinky finds it in her heart to give Brier a second chance, it doesn't stop that he can still rub her the wrong way afterward, even if he mean nothing of it. Maud probably likes being in Bries company because she doesn't need to stay on alert in following social norms and exception as like her Brier doesn't see them or expect them from her, so she can let her guard down with him while with Pinky, who Maud likely has an easier time reading her mood and is still accepting of her, can still be very draining for her. Dealing with a lot of people in social setting or even is often very draining for people with Asperguer as often their singular focused minds then is demanded in many directions can be overwhelming and will avoid or withdraw such even the first chance they get. They often prefer with one (or few) individual(s) at a time to put their full focus on them and prefer intimate settings. This said, what either Maud or Brier condition it does shouldn't excuse them everything they may say or do, weather it intentionally meant as being offending or ignoring their boundary, but explaining them what you perceive to be a slight at your expense and explained how you feel about them is a better way to tel them know what they are doing wrong directly instead of sending signals that they can't pick up on. Being a person with Asperger Syndrome myself, this an incredibly good episode to explain people with this condition, without treating them or as more accepting participating members of society and not just to be sideline or be teated as special snowflakes. We have a particularities but we do want to be apart of the world in our own way.

Maybe it was a few seconds. lol I posed a ? in the comments in the "Prance", part 3 video from you. I have not seen reply yet. I do begin to wonder if you do reply back or react to comments coming to you. When I saw the title I thought "The Odd Couple" Maud being the super neat one, and Mud Bryar being the "Unkept" one. Thank you for reading this, your friend Mr.Flamin'Kisses

It was interesting to watch this play out. Both Maud and Mud are clearly autistic, and because of the social ineptitude that comes with the condition, putting two together is often likely to be catastrophic. They can connect on a very deep level, deeper even than one alone could with any neurotypical, if *and only if* their passions line up *just right,* and luckily, Maud and Mud *do* have that connection. I also thought it was sweet that Mud had dedicated so much to keeping track of Maud's likes and dislikes, and his "file system" was actually a very intuitive visual representation of the autistic mind. I'm thrilled that DHX has been able to introduce these characters both accurately and tactfully, and I look forward to seeing them more in the future.

to be honest i don't see maud as autistic, shes socially awekard yes but autism no, mb yes hes got issues... alot of them and hes annoying as all get out and needs some help, not like doctor help but like a mentor help that could get him to not be so well off, like Maud has Pinkie Pie though thats not always a good thing but Pinkie Pie does provide Maud with a line into well reality that Maud would miss because she just is extremely intellegent

Timothy Krise Not every autist is Rain Man. Maud's symptoms: • socially awkward • poor at understanding and expressing emotions • hyperfocused interests (in her case, geology) Mud exhibits all of those as well, and also has a compulsion to correct things, which can come off as pompous even though his intent is only to help. He'e just tactless, which is another common symptom on the spectrum.
@redjesusfreak6 жыл бұрын
crap I lost my first reply, okay so first of all A, never saw rainman so wasn't referring to it at all. second lets nail what you think are Maud's symptoms: first socially awkward well we both agree, to me she operates at a higher wavelength of intelligence then most ponies and being intelligent doesn't make one autistic (is that why you made the rainman reference? cause yeah no). Now she does understand ponies but doesn't care if ponies understand her, she is a loner and has no problems being mostly on her own, though we see her growing out of this in later seasons (maybe Pinkie Pies influence). Now look at her jokes, they aren't totally understood my most ponies, doesn't make them bad jokes just not right crowd. Though honestly her humor usually is better working off someone then stand up but even Pinkie sometimes fails at stand up. I point this out as reading a room of ponies is not her forte and well being the center of attention isn't what she likes (example the bday party part aka awkward). okay so yeah second point emotions: when we put Maud in a more one to one situation she does understand emotions look at how she befriends Starlight, how she reads Rarity in the sister special gift swap day or what ever it was day, or how she reads Pinkie Pie like a book in seconds, yes they are sisters but well that doesn't always mean things as we see in how Pinkie miss reads her or how Rarity miss reads Sweetie all the time, but Maud is pretty accurate. Also she reads that shes not really fitting in with Pinkies other friends on the first day because well shes not a good fit for most of them really, I mean the only one that is close to her in intelligence is Twilight but just wrong temperament and personality (not that I don't love Twilight because I do) however the points of being friends because of the link of Pinkie works but still Maud's right they don't go out to the spa together or anything even after Maud moves to Ponyville (well that we know of but its a good guess). Anyway your third acirtation is that she is hyper focused and I'm not really denying that giving her family however she does give information on other things besides geology, though geology as a whole is pretty impressive so knowing as much as she does about it does say alot. Many geologists are specialized in specific areas, platonics, volcanonics, soil science, minerals, the list goes on and on. Maud seems to know it all. Not normal. Hence the high intelligence comments by me. now I still agree with you on Mud also as a guy with a degree in Urban Forestry and Forestry... his stick comments are kind of *smacks head with stick* comments.... stick abuse???? oi its a stick it doesn't even have pain receptors... arg okay (okay rant on MB done)
@DJCosmicLatte6 жыл бұрын
Timothy Krise Wait up, are you trying to use her intelligence as a reason you think she's *not* autistic? Autism isn't a learning disability; in fact, many people on the spectrum have above-average IQs. Furthermore, I'm basing my assessment on the same criteria that were used to diagnose *my* autism, so maybe, just maybe, I know what I'm talking about. I don't see why you're so intent on me being wrong.

I didn't really like Mud. He didn't strike me as a Maud-like character, he struck me smug and superior while happening to be kinda inexpressive. And I can believe Pinkie not seeing Maud in Mud. She grew up with Maud, so it makes sense that her deeper, life-long understanding of her sister has kind of set up some perception filters that don't apply to other Maud-like strangers.

I have never hated a character, or episode, in this series as much as this one. I realize the point was to make a male Maud, but they did so without using any of Maud's humor, charm, or charisma. This is what happens when you take all the worst qualities of Blueblood and Maud and mix them together
@TheKyrix826 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing that comparison, but I don't agree one bit. I've only ever seen clips of the show, but from what I've seen what Sheldon lacks in people skills he makes up for in sarcasm, humor, and timing. In short, while he lacks technique to use with it, he has plenty of charisma. Think of it like having your own gas station but not having anything to put the gas into. Mud Briar, on the other hand, has a gas station with no gas, and nothing to put it in. And when you come to him asking about the gas he corrects you on your phrasing and goes back to the latin origin of every word you spoke. As for the Blueblood comparison, yes, it absolutely applies. He has an overinflated ego with absolutely nothing to base it on. The difference is, Blueblood is entirely capable of being charming and charismatic when he wants to be (read the comics, he's actually a truely amazing diplomat), he just CHOOSES not to be. Whereas Mud lacks that redeeming balance.
@skewercorn98946 жыл бұрын
That's why I said Hollywood Autism: those recognizable token symptoms of the condition without the more debilitating and lesser-known aspects. I don't understand your gas station simile. I don't know if that's simply because I lack your perspective, or if it's because you did it badly. Also, Blueblood's lack of charm comes from a selfish, self-centered nature that was never parented out of him, as well as a stunning lack of concern for his public image (after all, if money solves everything, why do something you don't want to?). Mud's lack of charm comes from social ineptitude and an annoying, condescending tone that I can't even be sure is intentional, and so I'm very aware of how little water my Sheldon comparison might actually hold, because *Sheldon* is intentionally and unapologetically condescending and selfish while displaying Hollywood Autism whenever the writers need him to be sympathetic or funny.
@TheKyrix826 жыл бұрын
The gas station example boils down to this: Sheldon has an abundance of a resource that he has no ability to use, and Mud Briar has a place to HAVE an abundance of that resource, but he lacks said resource AND the means to use it. In short, Sheldon has an abundance of charisma, with very little ability to apply it. Mud Briar COULD have an equal abundance of charisma (Maud herself is a prime example of how), but he doesn't, and on top of that he wouldn't know what to do with it if he had it. Here's the thing though, humans can recognize when someone has charisma, whether they can apply it or not. That's why Maud and Sheldon are popular characters. Because even though they haven't got the slightest idea what to do with what they have, we recognize that it is there, and that perhaps with patience, it can be coaxed out of them. Mud Briar is a dry well in the desert. Drill as deep as you like, crank the bucket up and down all day, there's not a drop of water there, and you're gonna die of thirst.

I don’t think he was smug at all. It’s really that his types of characters like Sheldon Cooper often are so we just assume he must be. He never was angry with Pinkie even though she insulted him either and saying technically seems just a habit not something he takes joy when others are corrected.

Not sibling, but actually Mom. It wasn't until I was an adult that my stepdad told me my mom *loves* those cheesy "world's best mom" kind of things. I never got her those because I wanted to get her something "better" (I thought those things were a cop out) and my poor mom was so sad and confused that her daughters never got her the cheesy stuff ^_^;;;; This year she's getting a Build-A-Bear with a Best Mom shirt and voice recording from my sibs and I ^_^

Pinkie not knowing as much about Maud as she thought she did? Pinkie constantly assuming and being blatantly wrong? Didn't we just get this episode last season with Rock Solid Friendship? I don't know, that kinda bugged me. Maud and Mud were awesome, though. They're made for each other. :) Also great to see Marble and Limestone make an appearance. :D

I identify with Pinkie in that I have a brother-in-law who I don't always get along with but my sister is completely enamored with almost ten years later. He's a great guy, don't get me wrong, it's more that I'm an Aspie and he doesn't really understand how to interact with me. At all.
