This was the scene that convinced me Peter being a wiseass throughout the whole movie was all an act. He has a degree in psychology, so I think he's always trying to get reactions out of people to better assess a situation for his benefit. He showed how unreasonable Peck was acting with the situation using the dickless joke, then after the mayor got insight from the fire department, the church, and the Ghostbusters, he sweetened the deal by addressing the mayor by his name to respectfully keep his attention and suggested the best case scenario.
@Elthenar3 жыл бұрын
While I tend to agree, I don't place a lot of stock in his degree in psychology. I think he simply hustled his way through school. Everything you say is correct but it's because he is a natural hustler and not the result of any college he may have attended while chasing girls.

I appreciate the Priest siding with the Ghost Busters solely because it validates his job. Ghosts implies the existence of spirits, which proves the existence of an afterlife, and while the afterlife might not accurately represent what it looks like in the good book it still validates his job as essential so of course the religious man is going to side with the people who not only net benefit him personally but also prevents biblical happenings like "Demonic Possession" which is literally happening in the apartment one block over as Zuul is attempting to enter this world.

Reitman is awesome because of his sense of shot-relation. When 'Lenny' walks in we get a brief cut to Peter and Winston reacting with bluster, and when he describes how the Church will not take a position on ghosts, the one we see react (stone-facedly enrapt) is Egon, who is debating in his head what such a decision as that could mean in the face of theological history and it ties to human consciousness (really he just raises his eyebrows).

@@gregorypearce7468: It’s not even the only time Egon’s gone ballistic. Brace for a bit of backstory to help clarify a few things. In one storyline in the IDW comics, the Ghostbusters were being shown up by another team called the Ghost Smashers, led by Ron Alexander, a total jackass. They “blew up” the ghosts instead of trapping them. Well, that started to have negative effects and all the destroyed ghosts came together in this mass that was reeking havoc on the city. The two teams partnered up to mitigate the situation. Egon, Ron, and two of the other Ghost Smashers were stationed in a helicopter above the mass to help contain it. While Egon was explaining to the others how to use the Ghostbusters’ equipment, Ron made some snide remark, so Egon scolded him by saying he and his team basically swept dirt under the rug, said everything’s clean, and now there’s ants. Ron, being a complete jackass, taunted Egon by saying “I thought you were the smart one.” He added that it was good he came along otherwise Egon “would freeze under the pressure of trying to be clever and kill us all.” Well, Egon was very pissed and tried to strangle Ron, and in doing so, the helicopter they were in almost crashed. So yes, Egon is not someone to piss off. Sorry for the long explanation, I didn’t want anyone to get confused.

@@LostOneOmega This. There's a lot of symbolism with this scene. They could have been childhood friends, Lenny could have been a Catholic and, like Geoff said: the Archbishop represents a lot of Catholics and voters alike. New York City, despite its overall size, is broken down into Boroughs, which make for small communities of people where "everybody knows everybody". The Italian districts are good examples of this; they are very interconnected within their communities and their culture. So yes, it demonstrates that they are well acquainted with one-another, the Bishop and the Mayor. And for many years in the early history of New York, from about 1900 into the 1980s and early 90s, you really couldn't do anything without the approval of either the Mob, the Catholic Church, or both. Even today, I'm sure Cardinal Timothy Dolan has met with each Mayor at the start of their terms, whether they were Catholic or not. Like I said: there's a lot of symbolism in this scene, and I love it. It makes you think beyond the scene itself to these little details and the meanings behind them. Great scene.

@@paulmacartney8266 It's not the same anymore anyway. Afterlife took such a wrong turn. It might have the name but it sure didn't have the same feel. I got news for you- inventing a few new characters just so they could find nostalgia bait all through the film doesn't make your movie original-- or good. And the little Stay Puft minions, WTH was that all about- in the first film the Stay Puft man had a POINT-- it was what Ray dreamed up in his mind as the destructor. And it was FUNNY. Those stupid little baby Stay Pufts serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever except nostalgia for nostalgia sake.

Love how Cardinal Mike is at pains to say he can only comment on religious matters then gives Lenny the nod when he knows going with Venkman will get him re-elected

So many corruption hidden within this scene
@Vladpryde6 ай бұрын
@@VilaToro64 Not necessarily so. Catholics make up a huge section of voters in NYC. It's cultural and generational. For many decades, you couldn't really do anything in NYC without the approval of either the Mob, or the Catholic Church. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the Archbishops were taking bribes and swaying elections, but he does represent a lot of voters.
