you've gotta acknowledge the emphasis on being skinny in this era. The pants were cut to specifically fit a very skinny frame, and people pointed out if you even had the smallest gut on you! Many celebrities of this era have come out about eating disorders they got trying to fit into this aesthetic. It's pretty, sure, but there's always some sort of ugly side to everything!!
@goodytwoshoes65593 жыл бұрын
absolutely! It’s always great to point out all the ugly sides of an aesthetic and there really was a huge emphasis on being skinny. I also think that the paparazzi played a huge role in creating this huge celebrity culture to the point that many celebs got harassed and even had their lowest points broadcast all over the world (like Britney Spears). Not to mention the hyper consumerism of the McBling aesthetic. That’s for the comment it’s always good to talk about these things😊

It was a nightmare to shop for anything if you didn't feel like making your belly or ass crack the centerpiece of your outfit, but you still wanted to be fashionable. could it be the fact that we were all in lockdown the reason why y2k and mcbling made a comeback? i feel like since we are so much at home now we started to think more about the past specially because how blurry the future seemed last year when pandemic started and so i think it’s the nostalgia that kinda brought these aesthetics back
@tobygurd87523 жыл бұрын
maybe, but I think it's more likely that people wanted a new trend and style to follow. the '80s made a comeback, the 90s had aspect of fashion that came back. it feels like we're just working our way through decades at this point. and the Y2K/McBling era wasn't THAT long ago that that style is actually that unattainable, and clothes from that era may still be in the family closet. I think it's just a case of 'oh this is cool and it wasn't that long ago, but it's also really cute so ill just dress like this!!" I also think the pastel and sparkly colour pallet is appealing cuz 2019/2020 there was a LOT of dark earthy tones in trend, and this is like the polar opposite. People love and need change, and this new trend was the trend.

A really interesting difference I found between Y2K and the McBling watching these videos is the different aesthetics of masculinity. As you mention in the video, the portrayal of McBling aesthetics on media was mainly focused on things like romcoms and chick flicks. But in the Y2K era there was a much genderless quality to fashion expression in media. Actually most of the unique and experimental fashion from Y2K came from male oriented genres like action and sci fi. Just look at matrix, fifth element and even fight club to some extent. I guess this changed due to 911 and the war on terror since it lead to male oriented media becoming much more focused on incentivizing young men into joining the army. All action movies became either military propaganda or islamophobic thrillers. It’s fun to imagine an alternate universe where Y2K continued to grow and franchises like transformers or early MCU would have been less focused on military propaganda and more in creating weird sci fi experiences with bizarre customes and set design like the matrix. I was born in the late 90s thou I did catch a snag end of the y2k era I mostly lived in the McBling era. I had the bling jumpsuit, I had a bedazzler, some ppl in my family had the baby phat flip phones, I went to church blinged out. I do remember the outfits I wore as a kid back then, the platform/ wedge boots, long skirts (and mini skirts), and the purple open stomache butterfly 🦋 shirt I had (it’s hard trying to describe the shirt, I’ll find it and post it if I see it.) and a white sequenced purse that I also had in the color pink. With sunglasses 🕶 that had jewels on it. N I remember wen the switch from flip phone to side kick occurred sometime after the trend. I love the mcbling era cuz yeah it’s nostalgic and it’s wen I was able to dress myself and picked what I wanted to wear sometimes. But it’s honestly the era I had the best memories in. I was in love with kimora lee Simmons and baby phat and I wanted to be a designer just like her. There were some downsides to this era. Especially in the black community wen exotic looking black girls (light skinned or mix looking) and Hispanics that were skinny were the thing. N it was quite damaging. That part of it but other then that I loved this era.

I feel like the McBling era outlasted the 2008 crisis. Thinking about the Jersey Shore, Tila Tequila types from 08 to about '12. Hummers, Ed Hardy, Deisel, distressed denim, oakleys, and the mini skirt look often was paired with lingerie or corsets. We started seeing leggings over track suits, with brands like Lulu Lemon, Bench, and Under armour becoming more trendy. Overall the silhouette and general aesthetic didnt change all that much, but was definitely evolving towards the timbs/leggings/black top/jacket/choker uniform of the early 2010s

Lizzie McGuire was definitely Y2K. The show premiered in 2001 and stopped airing in 2004 (but wrapped filming in 2002) before McBling started to take off. She was all about butterfly clips, platform sandals, translucent tech, etc. Legally Blonde is also Y2K. It was released in 2001 too! One of the most iconic things about that movie is Elle's Tangerine iBook G3... that's definitely a Y2K thing. You overlapped Y2K and McBling a few other times here, but it's okay. As much as I loved this era I’m also saddened some of the hurt & intense pressure those in the business faced… I even remember around this time my queen Missy Elliott could never get away from the fat jokes until she slimmed down and started rocking thigh high heel boots & tight latex dresses (circa late 2003).

Young folks who weren't born yet I feel most often get the aesthetics confused, obviously because they weren't there or weren't old enough to witness it. Hell, spotiy has y2k playlists with Lady Gaga on them, who didn't come out until later in the decade. Y2k as a style, as a sound, as a whole thing, really only lasted from 1998 to 2001/2. These videos are very well done, I hope you do many more eras! People should know that the BLING in McBling came from Bling Bling which was from a 1999 hip hop song. Mariah Carey "Heartbreaker" video was also 1999 and was the early influence of McBling aesthetic from her low rise jeans to her pink and 'conventional' girliness. Aaliyah was wearing bedazzled bandanas in 2000/2001. Mary J Blige's style would get softer color's Disney with Cheetah Girls and That's So Raven in the McBling era. So while this era was a paparazzi thing, it started with Black people in hip hop and r&B. Nicole Richie was good friends with Aaliyah so that's how her style and influence showed up on Simple Life with Nicole and Paris Hilton. Dogs in the purse was all them though lol

I honestly started seeing these aesthetics return in 2017 rather than 2019 when brands like bape started normalizing things popular in the late 90's/early 2000s like the colorful and odd shaped sunglasses and pink camo cargo pants. My class (2018) was in that small nook of being around for the early 2000s trends and started becoming nostalgic for them and romanticized them right before early adulthood which is what I believe led to younger gen z kids jumping on the hype train for trends that existed back then like mcbling and y2k

lol my childhood. I was thinking the way we dressed back then was so bad but the kids are really glorifying it now.

You are so knowledgeable! I always leave your videos feeling I understand not just the aesthetic but the context for it as well. Great work!

I wanted a Baby Phat phone SO BAD back then! I remember getting a fake Louis Vuitton case for my flip phone at the mall, and that's about as McBling as you can get. XD

One fad I remember being HUGE in my 1st grade class was the Kool-aid jammer and Capri Sun purses.

My Super Sweet Sixteen that came out on MTV in 2008 was peak McBling. I was 16 in 2008 and had a sweet 16 with a limo and party at Dave & Busters. I got a limo because that bling lifestyle was a thing. I was born and raised in OC where the MTV show Laguna Beach is set. The Hills was on in 2008. So living in OC as a teen in 2008 meant you needed to participate in McBling to be cool, so a limo for your sweet 16 elevated your coolness factor.

So many memories even tho I’m on only 23 I just remember all of this I have been wearing juicy couture it’s the Dior shades , Cartier buffs were my fav I’m glad that it’s coming back because so many girls/women lost their girly aesthetic after these trends died

Personally, I'm not a fan of the majority of this style because it mostly looks tacky/unstructured to me and it's closely tied to having the body of a coat hanger to wear it. I like the juicy velvet sweats though, I would wear that around my house 100%

God most of it is really not my thing even now that its back but my fav thing was how FUN it all was. Tiny useless purses, pants and skirts you cant bend over in, a million logos and rhinestones and hairclips - it was not about practicality at ALL it was purely fun

Honestly, I noticed most of the people that tend ot hate on 2000s fashion, are usually in articles from hipster-ish older millenials that come off like they're not happy that the 2010s fashion isn't in with Gen Z. Like when the stuff they liked was in fashion. I see it a lot on Buzzfeed or sites that complain about it coming back vecause they associate it with celebrities and mainstream, even though they want their look to be mainstream.

i think the music video boy (i need you) by mariah carey is like a nice cross section between these two aesthetic, with y2k futuristic set and concept but with costume that is more close to the mcbling era aesthetic
