This seems like a planning/logistical failure on McDonald’s part rather than Hoyo’s since it is their app and their delivery of the collab, but it’s hard to say for sure what was agreed between them and who got control over what. But either way it’s pretty interesting to see the trend of Genshin fast food collabs causing a bunch of chaos but still generating a ton of revenue continue-which is why food brands are willing to keep on doing them despite the pandemonium they cause.

This has shades of the initial KFC collab causing cases of theft of standees from restaurants, and both that and their Pizza Hut collab causing large crowds that ended up needing police intervention. Of course the way this whole thing was set up might be McDonald’s fault as well since it was their app, it’s just crazy to see how much pandemonium one of their fast food collabs is causing once again.

This. The issues had nothing to do with having things turned on or not. It didn’t work either way. It was a mess regardless and it’s on McDonalds not Hoyo. It was clear McDonalds didn’t really anticipate the magnitude of this collab or the rabid nature of Genshin fan base. I don’t get how this is Mihoyo’s fault. Seems like the issues falls squarely on McDonald’s for poor planning. They failed to anticipate the amount of players that would be flocking to their restaurants for this collab, given that the US only makes up a tiny fraction of the global player base. Also have to take into consideration that there are tons of people out there getting as many codes as possible to resale on places like EBay for players who can’t order the meal. Again, McDonald’s issue, not Mihoyo.

I read that you had to opt in. It even says before you order, make sure you are opted in. If you did not receive acode check your spam folder. If not there, send a text to customer service in the app. Receive mine within 5 min.

If anything, collabs like this just showcase how valuable the IP is as a marketing tool though, there’s clearly a ton of demand and a lot of money being brought in. So if anything events like this, despite the general chaos that ensued, lead to the exact opposite conclusion. Genshin is simply too great a marketing beast. It’s no surprise that every Genshin livestream nowadays seems to have one official partnership or another somewhere. HSR is on its way up there, but ZZZ not quite yet, and in any case I don’t think their investors would be too happy if they just dropped their most lucrative IP (especially midway through).
