I feel like Kevin Feige has been gaslighting me for the past decade. So I needed to get this rant off my chest. Apologies if my voice sounds inconsistent here. I got a nasty cold halfway through this production. Anyway, Enjoy.
This video got age restricted, most likely due to the old title. Hope you don't mind the change.

Why even bother bringing up the comics? It’s a completely separate entity. The mcu doesn’t even bother following the comics most of the time anyway . What’s next, you’re gonna start complaining about starlord’s dad being ego or Stark and Banner creating ultron? Thanos defeating the hulk was necessary to show how powerful he is. I agree the character development is lazy and unreflective but not everything needs to be beholden to the comics.

If I remember correctly, the Hulk was on loan from Sony and they wanted no onscreen development so they could do their own movie, but they never did their own movie. I think Marvel only acquired him around Ragnarök, but it seems like Ruffalo was dictating the character afterwards if they wanted him to continue to play the Hulk.

The reason why “creative differences” happened with Edward is because he wanted to stay true to the comics with Hulk. @@jairesemccoy9779 Yeah, Thor Ragnorok should've been the only film taika waititi directed. It was a fresh new view on the character, but we all new it would get old after one movie. Infinity war kind of balanced the humor and the serious rage he has very well, they don't make him joke too much, but still make him joke a little bit, showing us how Thor copes with so much loss. Thor love and thunder did zero effort to progress on Thor's arc. He just got dumber, he got humiliated, Jane got to kick some ass(because she's a strong and independent female character), and after Jane dies everything goes back to normal. Except Thor is taking care of Gorr's daughter, and obviously she's gonna take the mantle of Thor, I'm almost a hundred percent sure. And now, Thor always has to be this goofy dumb character because now, he has a child he needs to take care of. So of course he can't be the serious Thor we got before. And the asguardians of the galaxy is down the drain now, so we can forget about that.

They made a reflection of Mark Rufalo, rather than the embodiment of the comic-book hero. It's so sad that they chose to vandalize the material right when cgi got good enough to realize these characters in full. No more cheesie mockups and toys in bathtubs kind of stuff. The worst part was that they actually wrote hulk into infinity war, they showed him bursting out of the armor and advertised it as such. They even filmed a scene with hulk in endgame where he is saving citizens from a fire. If these were included this could have been the “professor hulk” so that by the end of endgame could feature the planet breaker. They teased his revenge and didn’t play it through. His “love interest” dies and he has a building collapse on him. If there was ever a world breaker moment that was it. But instead he throws a bench.

It's so funny because, to me, 2008 Hulk (MCU or not) was extraordinarily weak compared to even current, neutered Credible Hulk. He would have been killed with a flick of a finger from current Hulk (given that, this Hulk was smashing Jeeps while current Hulk is supporting massive mounds of island with one shoulder and equalling the same Thor who stood in front of the full force of a neutron star). And yet he had the savagery, he had the anger, the loneliness. He was Hulk. The new 'Hulk' is really Banner who killed Hulk off screen and is wearing his big green CGI body like a skinsuit to puppeteer as he cringes at actual displays of anger and cites facts and logic to beat you.

I think a good comparison would actually be how Spider-Verse subverts what it means to be Spider-Man. It's a movie where there's literally like 6 different versions of him from vastly different timelines and as entirely different people (even as a Pig) but the core of the character isn't about how Spider-Man needs to be Peter specifically, they just need to be able to have his willpower to keep going. No matter how many times he is knocked down or fighting someone way stronger than him he always gets back up because he has the power to do so. "With great power comes great responsibility" and so on. MCU breaking the Jekyl and Hyde aspect to Banner/Hulk kind of defeats the point of the character. You could do a retelling where Banner is a different age, race, gender etc but so long as that Jekyl and Hyde aspect is in tact then the core of the characters is still there.

I’m not a comic book fan and didn’t really know much about the characters prior to the movies, but those early “episodes” were very enjoyable and I grew to care about some of them. I stopped watching after endgame but the characters now largely feel interchangeable to me. So I think what happened to Bruce/Hulk is likely evidence of a more widespread lack of care

I get exactly what you're saying, and I started noticing this issue when they incorporated Spider-Man into the MCU. Don't get me wrong, I like Tom Holland as Peter/Spidey and I liked the dynamic between him and Iron-Man(though I do understand some of the criticism). But my biggest problem with MCU Spider-Man is just how much he feels like a "spoke on the wheel". His character has no individual gravitas. His character isn't written to be too imposing in the Avenger movies where he could feel like a stand-out either within the storyline and/or the action. He just feels like another guy on the team. His movies don't stand out from the rest either. Say what you want about the Raimi and Webb movies, but back when those movies were coming out, it felt like a grand event every time a new Spider-man movie came out. Now it just feels like MCU Movie number ____. It's good? Doesn't matter. It's bad? Doesn't matter. It just comes and goes. He may as well be Ant-Man. He may as well be Shang Chi. Who cares? It's just another MCU movie. No Way Home was the only time it felt like I was watching a "Spider-Man movie" and not a "MCU movie". Not that there's anything inherently wrong with having your movies or your character become so....MCU-fied, but I just expect more oomph from Marvel's most important character.

@@bikramarora1819 I think the MCU has become a victim to its own success. The crossovers should be special and for a while the team ups were cool. But now everything they’re doing needs to tie in to everything else so it’s not any ONE character’s arc; all must be told in service of the larger goal. As DC movies have proved, people can handle several versions of their favorites going at once. I wish Marvel had figured out how to leave at least some properties in their own sandbox so they could breathe a bit without the pressure of how it all fits in.

@@ellicel The oversaturation of their content, in my opinion, is the BIGGEST problem they're currently facing. 5 movies and 10 shows a year is too much. To me, irregardless of the quality of the content, half of these shows and movies are dead on arrival. Why? Because they either don't need to exist, needed more time in the oven, or should've been spaced out to give people a breather. And how do they decide to solve it? By announcing EVEN MORE shows and movies over the next 3 years. 2 freaking Avengers movies over 6 months. Great. That's exactly what we needed.

You forgot the scene at the end of Avengers when Loki and a bunch of Chitauri seemed to be overwhelming him with concentrated fire, just before Stark put the bomb through the gate. And the thing they never even tried to develop was the way he's supposed to get stronger when he gets angrier.
@Unchainedful
@Unchainedful Жыл бұрын
True, but even in the comics just like in real life, you can only be so angry. Anger has a limit, once it hits it limit, your body naturally calms you down or shuts you down with seizures or brain hemorrhage. This happen to bill a couple of times fighting against Juggernaut where Juggernaut tested Hulk’s rage where Hulk eventually reverted back to Bruce and Juggernaut gets confused on where Hulk went, allowing Bruce to sneak off. There were other villains that tested Hulk’s rage as well.

@@Unchainedful There isn't really much of a comparison between real life and comics when talking about the hulk specifically (with a few exceptions). As much of a beating he's taken in the comics, Hulk in my opinion is arguably not just human, but a mutate. He has a healing factor which would imply that his anger technically doesn't have a maximum capacity unless writers vigorously downplay him for storyline purposes. Honestly, the MCU has continued to beat the shit out of the character repeatedly. The Hulkbuster scene alone made a tear roll down my face.

Despite not being apart of the MCU, Ang lee understood the Hulk a lot better than most who wrote or directed the character. He was able to beautifully set the differences between Bruce and Hulk by showcasing that duality. He also was able to use Hulk as that physical manifestation of all of Bruce’s anger, frustration, and abuse. An important factor that the MCU severely failed in showing. While the 2003 film tends to be trashed on, it’s probably the most faithful live-action iteration of the character we’ll ever see. Bruce is always at war with himself and that’s always been a consistent factor for the character that I wish we can go back to in the future.

Like maybe Banner's been quietly working on a cure in a deep meditative state undetected by Hulk's part of the brain, which leads to disaster and the hulk breaks free at the worst point of the movie and he realises he'll never be free. Though I do like how they explroed Hulk wanting to be loved in Ultron then Ragnarok and now as this superstar. Who knows, maybe Doom will unleash the hulk as he takes over the world with kang. The 2003 Hulk was my personal favourite. It explored the tragedy of Banner's past and emotional trauma that could be limitless. Also the fact that Hulk could get progressively more and more angry, resulting in him getting even bigger and stronger. The sheer brutality displayed by Hulk felt truly impactful and there were good moments of character, like him using a tank's cannon barrel like a clubbing weapon or him accidentally hitting himself in the nuts lifting a tank's turret. The actress for Betty, Jennifer Connelly, is beautiful and seemingly fit into that role like a glove. Her interactions with her military-man father played out really well. And the mirror scene with Bana was fantastic.

Also, keep in mind that in the comics, Professor Hulk was not just a merging of Bruce and Hulk's body, but their MIND as well, and that included Grey Hulk/Joe Fixit as well. Professor Hulk had Bruce's intelligence, Fixit's cunning tactical mind and humor, and Savage Hulk's compassion (something that most people gloss over. Despite it all, Savage Hulk is arguable one of the most benevolent characters in Marvel. It's just that the whole world relentlessly attacks him). Also, the story where the merging happens is one of my all time favorite stories (The Incredible Hulk #377). Later on Professor Hulk would be retconned into being a new personality in Bruce's psyche. The Professor Hulk in the movies is just Banner Hulk, from the Bill Mantlo era, but worse. At least Mantlo's version had Bruce fearing that Savage Hulk would ultimately take over... Which he did and led to one of Hulk's greatest battles in the comics. I will admit that I love Thor Ragnarok. It's a comfort movie by this point. And I like Hulk in it. But I won't lie. 100% no question about it. Definitely a better character (and actor) and the Hulk looked a million times better in it. Looked bigger, more intimidating, and looks way better with bangs. Not to mention he actually gets more and more angry and it’s shown. He’s also a much better fighter compared to the avengers one. Like he grabbed a car and ripped it in 2 and used them as boxing gloves (which is sick af) and he also did the hulk clap to take out fire to save Betty and stomped the ground and caused an earthquake to make abomination lose his balance and as he was staggering then rushed forward and grabbed the chain that Abomination had and used it to choke him out and take him out. And Abomination is powerful af and the reason Hulk was able to best him was cause he was trying to save Betty (so character development since Hulk cares for Betty just like Bruce does). U want to know the stupid thing? The “creative difficulties” they had with him and the reason he was fired was cause Norton wanted to stay true to the original character cause he knew this is what they wanted to do with the Hulk. These people are so stupid it’s not even funny. They should’ve listened to Norton. He knew what he was talking about and what everyone wanted.

The writers wasted something that could have been even greater than it already was. Look how he defeated Hulk and against Thor he was winning, it just doesn't make sense. Hell, he was holding his own against two superhumans, beating the crap out of Captain America. The biggest problem was Ironman was too OP in the franchise.

No I disagree, we already saw Hulk fight Thanos. It would be the same thing all over again. Iron man being the one that defeats Thanos in the end is a great way to end his character arc. The better idea would have been to defeat Cull Obsidian. There was a good scene where Hulk busts out of the Hulk Buster suit but that was deleted. He should have been the one to pound him and kick his ass in Endgame. Instead Drax, and Giant Man defeat him. That was the real hulk disappointment with Endgame. Hulk does nothing almost nothing in Endgame except be the one to bring everyone back with the first snap, he War Machine and Rocket, and fight some outrider monsters. @@biguy617 I never said that hulk would be the one to defeat thanos in the end, i'm saying he should've had gotten Wanda's moment where she started attacking thanos and he had to rain fire. As for the claim it would've ended the same, that's simply not true. First off the mcu seems to treat professor hulk as a more powerful version of what we've seen before, so there's no telling how he would've done. Secondly, hulk getting a rematch with thanos and having the upper hand on him would've been a perfect end to his character arc. The movie already setup that hulk and banner lost twice and blame themeselves for the snap specifically because they couldn't beat thanos. If they get another shot at him and prove to be more powerful not only would that restore hulk to the powerhouse he once was, but it would also make that come back full circle. "We didn't lose this time." It would also add way more weight to hulk's overarching character arc. In every movie he was basically the nuclear option, somebody who was too dangerous to be used friviolously. Now we would finally get to see what a controlled non harmful hulk is like in the mcu. Cull obsidian is alright but we literally already saw hulk beat him😂😂😂. Having hulk beat him again would be boring, pointless, and serve nothing for his character arc. Oooo wow hulk. Cap lifted mjolnir, hawkeye got his own series, Tony saved the universe, thor got another movie, and widow sacrificed herself and got her own movie. All the other founding members got epic moments and ends to their charactsr arcs but we're gonna have you beat the same guy Bruce fought in the last movie. 💀💀💀. Cull obsidian would be a horrible choice. That would've been even more disappointing than what we got. Thor should've snapped and hulk should've fought thanos. Hulk's best place would've been giving thanos the 1-2 combo.

Hulk on the other hand hasn't got anything truly epic to his name since age of Ultron. Thir ragnarok didn't even give him much to do character or power wise. Wanda also got plenty more moments that prove she's the strongest female character, so again she didn't need this. And being more interesting that Brie larson's captain marvel isn't very hard 😂. Professor Hulk was chosen to do the return snap because of the gamma radiation released by the snap and Hulk being created with gamma radiation. That snap should have got rid of Professor Hulk and amplified Bruce's Hulkness giving Hulk a new form because his body needs to heal and deal with a sudden intense surge of gamma radiation, which leads to a new larger, angrier and stronger Hulk that is more than capable of throwing hands with Thanos. It makes sense that Thanos beat up Hulk, but with Hulk back stronger and bigger he can have his revenge on Thanos by allowing Hulk to have his "fun". His new Hulk design would change with him being taller, larger and having a disgustingly high amount of muscle making him more of a monster than regular Hulk.

Also, the Professor Hulk of the comics was written (mostly) be Peter David, a freaking genius, and his story run is great. For one thing, Professor Hulk per se is regarded as a very problematic degeneration of the Unified Hulk (aka Doc Green, who picks up a team of sidekicks like Doc Savage), who balanced the superego (Banner), ego (Grey), and id (Green) in a tenuous and dramatic yet triumphant fashion. Prof Hulk is mostly just a strong confident Banner, who eventually breaks down under the strain of trying to have only one factor of his personality in primary (instead of balanced) control. (The Unified Hulk doesn't return until the Worldbreaker, who is radically overpowered.) But even this nuance is gone in the MCU. He isn't even the slowly shattering Professor Hulk from the comics. Notably, the Professor Hulk (Banner being the only personality evident) in PD's run wasn't the first time the comics had done this for a while. It happened back before and during the Secret Wars maxi-series, too -- with a similarly shattering psyche being the result, though with less dramatic nuance. Turns out Nightmare, a Doctor Strange villain, was behind that the first time -- who gets his ass thoroughly kicked (for a while) by Banner in the Hulk's psyche as what seems a suicide move, leaving over the total Id mindless Hulk, trapped by Strange (after a murderous rampage) in the Dream Dimension for some time. Many of us thought the MCU writers were setting up something like this in Multiverse of Madness (where in the first draft Nightmare was indeed the villain).... but we know now how that turned out, thanks to the script being completely rewritten during shooting. Ah, well. We hardly knew ye, MCU Hulk.

I think a huge part of the MCU putting humor any chance they get into their movies and spinning serious scenes to have humor is a significant reason why we can't take some character's transformations/character progression seriously. I mean look at the new Thor movie for instance, my thought after watching that movie was "this is downright goofy, Idk if I can take Thor seriously at all." That feeling "creeped" in during the Thor Ragnarok movie, but was solidified in the latest one. I had the same feeling with the hulk as more and more mcu movies were dished out. It was very sad to see him written into a scaredy-cat into end-game when I wanted to take him seriously, but the "we have a hulk" line really meant nothing at all by then. I think what the MCU directors/producers have to learn is that humor is good, but don't turn every serious scene into having some joke or humor attached to it so characters can seem more impactful and drive home their more serious personalities.

As a Hulk fan I grew more and more impatient with how he was utilized in the MCU. I know there are teases of a world breaker hulk movie in the future but at the end of the day. I don't even know if it would be worth watching. I'm embarrassed of what the Hulk has become. The Russo's stating character development of the Hulk but what for and why? Legit has no purpose or meaning towards the bigger picture. Completely unnecessary... Don't even get me started on all the past fights he's had throughout the MCU, to lose single-handily to pretty much everyone, is just downright annoying. When infinity war came out I was happy to see that Thanos and the Hulk were going to face off. Until my boy got wrecked in 10 seconds. Like what??? Also not even a redemption to face him again in ENDGAME. My guy was still holding up the Avengers compound that whole time??? Ugh genuinely so upset with this. I can go on and on about my frustrations but this post is meant to say I understand where you're coming from. My only disagreement is that 2008 Hulk was by far the better version of the Hulk. Although there are some things I would change in that film its still my all time favorite. He was angry, fought the military, and he also had BETTY ROSS!!! Like the video says, the downside to Hulk is the risk for collateral damage due to lack of control over his immense power. This is why his presence does not make any other Avenger redundant. In the comics, in the animated stuff, in the 2003 movie with Eric Bana, even in the old Bill Bixby TV show, the Hulk always had a healing factor, usually on par with Wolverine's. But I never saw this in the MCU that I can recall. And that's just awful. Also, I don't believe Endgame Hulk was Prof Hulk. I think that was just Banner Hulk (Hulk's body with Banner's mind). I strongly agree with a lot of what you said, especially regarding Age of Ultron onwards, but I’m really disappointed with how fast you glossed over The Incredible Hulk. If you ask me that was one of the best incarnations of both Bruce Banner and the Hulk that we’ve gotten, and right up there with the animated portrayals. You didn’t even delve into the character like the other movies, but just said that the movie itself was mediocre and then moved on which I don’t think is fair. I don’t know why a lot of people find the movie to be boring because I thought it was a very interesting and captivating story about the Hulk as a character and how he came to be. Not to mention the movie actually portrayed him as an intelligent yet savage, animalistic beast unlike the rest of the movies, and was probably the most comic accurate. I’m sure it has a few flaws in its plot and all that, but I can easily forgive and ignore them for everything else the movie has to offer, especially on the character alone. That was when Bruce and Hulk in the MCU were at their peak. Also not entirely related but I don’t think the CGI was bad at all. I thought Hulk and Abomination looked really menacing, and there was a lot of care into the detail from the veins to the muscle fibers, and even tinier details like the sweat and dust. I thought they blended really well with the real environment unlike current characters in the MCU who just look really colorful and cartoony with little to no detail. The only time it looked kinda off was when Hulk was standing face to face with Blonksy but that’s it really. They were a lot more beastly and violent-looking compared to Hulk in Avengers 1 onwards.

The "I'm always angry" line is actually super relatable for those of us with anger issues. You are always raging a little, but you have it under control most of the time. When something does set you off though, you get more upset than you should because you have all that waiting under the surface. The hard part is putting all that anger away once you are that upset, so I always saw this as Bruce's way of saying that letting out the Hulk is not the hard part.

I feel like that would be a great explanation if he didn't turn into the Hulk anytime he gets angry. I feel like what he'd be feeling constantly is more so depression, annoyance frustration or even anxiety because he knows once he even gets a little mad he has to watch himself. That is, if we're actually taking what he says at face value. Your explanation is a good one though.

The mcu just doesn't understand how stakes work. People make fun of power levels but they add to the stakes, they add to continuity and the emotion you have for the events taking place. I didn't notice the fall of hulk until ragnarock but yes hulk loses like every fight😔 he's my second favorite marvel hero and they never had any intention of giving him a proper adaptation.

Another issue is that Universal Studios is still a Co-Owner film wise. They couldn't do another Hulk Film after Incredible Hulk. I remember in an article Ruffalo was asked to give input about what he wanted to be done with character since he'd never get a solo film.

This video is another valid point to why I personally think Hulk 2003 and 2008 are definitive versions of the character. The MCU turned him into Shrek(on steroids). Calling him Hulk is actually disgraceful to the character.
@davidstratton696
@davidstratton696 11 ай бұрын
Shrek on steroids? Haha. But yea pretty much. They just completely ruined him. He had a much better character in general in 2008 not to mention that Hulk looked a lot better (more intimidating, bigger, and the bangs look a lot better). And he’s a better fighter and actually gets more and more angry too and uses things he never used in the avengers (like the clap to take out the fire to save Betty and where he stomped the ground hard to make Abomination lose his balance). And speaking of that he took out Abomination. Like c’mon how could they mess it up this bad? Yea it is disgraceful to the character. Norton was also a better actor as well and definitely fit more. The stupid thing is the “creative difficulties” he had with them and the reason he was fired was he knew this is what they had planned for Hulk and he wanted to stay true to the original. Like how stupid can they be? They should’ve listened to him. He knew what he was talking about.

@@davidstratton696 Well said. BTW " Shrek on steroids " was a term used to describe 2003 Hulk because of the unfinished CGI leak before the films release I think. They dissed and hated this version yet it was the most accurate. And now the MCU got themselves another comedian.

They should have made hulk the main reason the avengers get together for the first time in the first avengers. Like the original time in the comics, it was Loki manipulating hulk getting the heroes to fight him. This could have lead to them teaming up in the end as well.

"I'm always angry" makes total sense to me. He's reached a sort of peace and he, for the most part, has control of his transformations because he's reached a sort of zen understanding of his anger and his place in it. The helicarrier transformation is different because he does lose control because of external factors.
@chrishayes8197
@chrishayes8197 Жыл бұрын
the OP review, regarding the helicarrier, just skips over that the whole premise there is that Loki's scepter is magically provoking conflict among all of them, primarily The Hulk. He's blindly targeting everyone because he's under a spell. (Whether that's a *good* plot mechanism is a different discussion.)
