The Media Lies About Drugs | The War on Drugs

The media has a drug problem, we need to stage an intervention. From 'face-eating cannibals on monkey dust' to people on bath salts 'ripping out their scrotum' to 'crack babies', newspapers keep making up drug stories.
Over the past century, large sections of the press have acted as campaigners for the War on Drugs, hyping up drug-scare stories and peddling false narratives.
From the ‘crack babies’ hysteria that shook America in the 1980’s to the ‘weed is a gateway drug’ theory, media outlets use shock tactics to sell papers. Reports of ‘zombies’ with ‘superhuman strength’ high on ‘monkey dust’ are not only wildly inaccurate, but they dehumanise some of society’s most vulnerable people.
In this episode of The War On Drugs, we debunk some of the media’s biggest drug myths.
In War On Drugs, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide. Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe.
Everyone loses - except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.

hi nick! thank you for sharing. my name is mike oxlong, and I'm a mouthwash addict. i use bout a bottle a day. "everybody does it" is what I used to tell myself. and "if its so bad, why is it even legal" i used to buy the supermarket stuff, but it got too expensive, and the clerks started to not wanna sell to me anymore.. i saw on a forum that you can make your own with dish soap, peppermint oil and bleach, so I started doing that. the lower cost meant I could make as much as I wanted, so I was on it ALL the time. even at work. ofcourse I got caught, because customers would complain that the building stank like a swimming pool, and that one of the staff (me) was literally foaming at the mouth. so I got fired and had all the time in the world to stay at home and M-wash. i didn't even get out of bed. not even to empty my spit bucket. but soon I couldn't taste anything, so I started shooting it - rectally. i hope that by reaching out I can find the strength to get help. its no way to live - and its a hard way to die.

@@gabemendoza1052 I believe this to be true. But I don't think the gate-way drug theory is a good argument against legalizing cannabis, because there is the same issue with alcohol. Cannabis has a lot of effects and we still don't understand the plant fully - there are definitely risks as well as pros.

The idea of weed not cutting it is extremely silly. Weed is only one type of high, other drugs have other things to offer. I use every drug (rarely) but smoke weed every night. I don't use other drugs because weed isn't good enough, I use other drugs because it's fucking stupid to only ever use one of them 😂 There are so many unique experiences. That would be like saying people eat a variety of foods because cheerios aren't good enough. It's arbitrary. I could just as easily say someone smokes weed because coke doesn't cut it anymore. They're not comparable

@Adam Roberts I mean that's an easy general statement to make. I think what you say has validity, totally, but I don't think it's always been as bad as it is currently. While we might have more means of helping or seeming to deal with them today, we've also vastly increased our institutional capacities to deal with folks who struggle with mental illness, but not ALWAYS FOR THE BETTER. I think folks in the past who had mental illness could have still been included in society to a much larger degree than in the past few centuries, but we've increasingly developed our ability to remove them, if not even hide them. In some older or ancient societies, what we might consider crazy people today could have been famous poets, philosophers, in some cases even being seen as prophetic. Nowadays, those same people and others are thrown in prison, locked up in mental institutions, receive special education or treatment their entire lives, treated as a biological and medical anomaly who needs therapy rather than a human who needs treatment/help, are proscribed pharmaceutical drugs from ages as early as 8 than literally affected brain development, and even having documented certain illnesses in the US can have you barred from countless job positions, I think the way you and I might think of mental illness are relatively new ideas of mental health that have really only come into play in the past couple of hundred years, but epitomized in our pharmaceutical oriented world that we now live in. So yes, mental illness is demonized, and on one hand benefited from being ignored for a long time as people were still seen as people, rather than the biologized-medicalized-imperfect-anomaly. I don't say this to lambast you, but I do think that there are a lot of serious issues with the way we frame and treat mental health today, which I don't think you disagree with haha. I mostly wanted to help explore this myth that things have developed in this vein of "positive progress" throughout time and will continually improve, with my concern that if there aren't serious steps taken to address our cultural stigma of normal and uncommon mental behavior, it will only grow like a real disease.

He's alright, and as other commenters have sorta hit on, we don't really have decent information on any of the risks or what makes drug use dangerous, like the weed psychosis stuff is shown to be incredibly rare, but does get worse when you make the weed stronger and is linked to one of the active ingredients. This distrust is obscuring people from using these things responsibly

@Rancie Hannah saying that premature babies were caused by poverty, instability, and criminalization IS bias. Crack babies were misdiagnosed fetal alcohol syndrome babies. Rick people have preemies too. Also comparing milk or brushing your teeth to the use of marijuana is insane. The concept is quite simple unless you try to use framing devices to mislead watchers like this guy. Marijuana definitely was a gateway drug along with the information from the DARE program. I chose to not say no but if I hadn't liked marijuana I probably wouldn't have ended up selling my ass on polk street for crack money. Just sayin.

Marijuana was originally a "gateway drug" but it had nothing to do with marijuana. Before the Hippie thing in the 1960's, the only place most people knew to get weed was from a drug dealer standing in the shadows of a street corner. These Mafia related dealers sold not only weed but heroin too. Weed was a gateway drug then because the dealer usually encouraged you to try heroin because it would hook you and make you come back more often than just weed. Growing up in New England in the 1950's, I even heard about dealers lacing weed with some type of opiate derivative so that just smoking weed would make you hooked first on opiates, then the straight heroin. But all this relates to WHO Was Selling Weed and not about weed itself. After the drug scene opened up in the mid-1960's, weed was everywhere and no one went to Mafia dealers on the corner to buy weed anymore. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

And this is, essentially, how I ended up addicted to opioids. I made this exact experience in my teenage years, realizing weed definitely isn't as harmful as I had been tought, and wondered what else I got lied to about. It made drugs as a whole seem less dangerous, and it made me distrust anything someone not taking drugs was telling me about them. In the end, I of course had to realize that at least some of the things the media says about drugs are at least partly correct. Of course I made a lot of bad experiences, of course I got into very dangerous situations and of course it changed my life for the worse until I decided to stop and do a rehab. Still, this is a very good example why lying to kids and teens can't ever be proper drug prevention. If the point you're trying to make is correct, you won't have to lie about it. And if it isn't correct, why are you trying to make that point then?

Same here. There was a huge downward spiral over the 2 years that I smoked weed. I suddenly needed to smoke every day, eventually multiple times a day, it was a terribly expensive addiction. When I would run out I would start to have panic attacks and major withdrawl until I was diagnosed with drug induced bipolar 2 disorder after trying to kick weed completely. Ended up in a psychiatric ward. Two years later to this very date I'm still on hard drugs to maintain a good mental. Weed can help some people but ultimately if you rely on in every day, it does more harm than good imo. No hate against it, just my experience

First, you are already breaking the law, so there is no longer a line to cross in trying other illegal drugs. Second, you realize most of the thinhs you've been told about drugs is bullshit, so what about the other drugs they say bad things about? @@justanordinaryaccount9910 actually, if a healthy person is forced to take an antidepressant...it likely will then MAKE them depressed. Its A FACT. How is that considered better AND deemed okay? Thats whats happening nowadays, pushing people in pain or who has ADD or anxiety into taking an antidepressant instead of a controlled substance which are all pretty much being banned for all no matter what and giving psych meds as an alternative claiming they have "LESS" bad side effects. Its NOT true AND IS ALSO LIES!!! Who ever is delegating these "Theories" and rules on prescribing meds to the world IS delusional and actually CAUSING more harm than good. And WHY IS alcohol and toxic cigarettes legal and not considered gateway drugs BUT marijuana grown in nature IS, making it still NOT legal most places?? There ARE way more tragic things coming from alcohol particularly than EVER from weed!! Drunk people DO lots of horrible things...AND what does a person who smokes some weed likely do? Brian Gonzalez...I don't know where you live, but as of the war on drugs NOW and all these new rules for Drs have changed...pretty much NO ONE is prescribed pain meds "like tic tacs" anymore. The only way anyone gets pain meds now is if they have been going to same Dr for years and are lucky enough not to have been given some lame excuse as to why they must suddenly need to be stopped for good or even lowered in quantity. The new rules seems to be...one bad seed ruins it for everyone. And now the whole world MUST be babysat and all our choices are dictated FOR US. I can guarantee suicide rates are the highest they have EVER been right now and its NOT all because of covid related depression either. I thought the whole purpose on the war on drugs was to try and lessen the deaths caused by drugs? And thats what the whole problem was..too many people dying. I think someone needs to check their facts and statistics because I can guarantee the war on drugs IS actually backfiring on who ever was intelligent enough to choose the way to "FIX" things regarding ALL that. Too many cooks in the kitchen who believe their way is the only way and the right way. And totally ignoring the BIG picture. Such a shame the HUGE amount of people suffering in silence and NO ONE even cares. Haven't we all been noticing how grumpy and rude and depressed the whole world has become? Because I sure have. 😟

Without exposure to his story, how he grew up, and his mental health at the time, I would have absolutely just seen him as inhuman rather than my friend who after years of abuse and poverty turned to something that at least gave him a bit of happiness. He's an example of the "gateway drug" population but it absolutely wasn't because weed made him want more. It was out of his desperation where his self-medicating failed him. Thankfully he's clean now, but what saved him wasn't the friends ostracizing him or his lack of ability to source his drugs since he still had enough money to get it, what saved him was getting him therapy, a safe home, and friends who were there to encourage him rather than shame him.

The line that went something like the war on drugs is essentially the gateway drug is the nail everyone keeps missing. Spot on.

Love this series, these are topics and ideas I have been reading about for nearly a decade and it's amazing to see it slowly turning around to full legalization of all drugs, finally ending the drugs war.

I feel like the gateway thing is more about experiencing the opportunity to not be sober, and learning you like it earlier than an age where you know self control

Pot is a gateway drug but not in the sense of wanting harder drugs, but it introduces you to the people who use and sell hard drugs. They have focused too much on the drug itself and not the people using/selling them.

I tried coke before I smoked weed and had alcohol poisoning before trying either. We can say alcohol introduces you to downers since it’s works on GABA just like most downers and uppers cause people like to be stimulated while smashed but I don’t understand how a cannabinoid could be to blame for people trying drugs.

Hey Jamie, dunno if you're going to read this but in case you do, I wanted to tell you that you're one of the very few VICE reporters I really enjoy and like. You're keeping it plain and simple, fact based, without exaggerating. You're all about the topic and aren't trying to make the video about yourself, like many other VICE reporters sadly do. Keep doing what you do!
