There are books for Med on a budget. Also, what I've found is that the first time to the store is expensive as you're stocking on everything, but after the weekly cost is pretty low - unless you are buying a lot of meat. However, I don't do a lot of meat - occ. fish and a lot of sardines (if you don't like sardines - try dumping a can in a bowl, mix with a small avocado, lemon juice, salt and pepper and put on cucumber slices instead of crackers) . Beans and pasta are cheap (unless you do like I do which is whole grains pasta) - but that cost is really cheaper than fast food - as you get multiple meals out of a single recipe.

I have been doing a keto diet for 7 years. I found your website and I need change. My body is not well and lacking nutrients. I ordered your cookbook and am watching your videos. I have come to a weight that is unhealthy and under weight. I have prayed and realized that I need guidance and I found you. I don’t think things happen coincidentally. May God Bless your words and presentation as I am watching the art of this Mediterranean lifestyle. Today is day 1 for me.

I started the Mediterranean Diet 2-3 days ago after finding your channel. I haven’t been perfect at it because there were a few brand new foods in the fridge that I didn’t want to waste, like marmalade a friend made especially for me. But I’ve made a good effort. This morning I woke to the most exuberance I’ve felt in decades. I’m calmer, happier, more relaxed. I breathe more deeply and slept through the night for the first time in ages. And I’m having life changing realizations that are creating a snowball effect in my self esteem. I heard you say to feel better first and then lose weight. I certainly hope this is right, but it looks like the feel better part is already happening! In short (LOL), I’d like a video about the effects of the Mediterranean Diet on mental health and depression.

As someone who lives in a country where the Mediterranean Diet is naturally used, it's pretty good! I will say that one more con is that if you are lactose intolerant, the amount of cheese consumed will leave you a little discouraged but the rest of it is still amazing

Hi Bill. I agree that it is wise to stock up in bulk. My neighbor and I buy fish and sea food together to cut the cost. Our fish market gives us a discount if we combine a buy of salmon. Same with shrimp, etc. I strive to buy organic healthy foods, thus avoiding trips to the doctor. Do try to buy as a group to save money when you can.

Nice video. As for seasonal veggies goes you can go the way past generations had preserved vegetables throughout the year specially for winter. Picκled vegetables. Tomatoes ( sun dried or pickled), cucumbers, olives, small eggplant green beans even eggs and many many more. so buy/cultivate fresh in summer and preserve for winter. as an addition to budget cooking i would like to recommend using a pressure cooker. less water less electricity/gas usage and the vegetables cooked in their juices . Great dishes to experiment with it is fasolakia ( green beens with tomatoes) mpriam ( various vegetables) spanakorizo ( spinach and rice) and all the pot recipes in general.

I will look further to see what is allowed and not allowed on this authentic Mediterranean diet. Is grass-fed butter allowed? Well, it CAN be plant based, but in areas where this diet is eaten in the Mediterranean, it include meats, poultry, fish, cheese and butter. So the Whole Foods Plant Based diet is similar, but does not include oils, butter, animal products or pasta, which the Mediterranean diet does. I love eating whole foods, but I feel I need animal products. I've tried vegan whole foods before, and just didn't feel right after four months on it.

Whole fat. They are incorrect about low fat. Low fat is a modern sort of scam. Doesn't help you lose weight if that is your goal--because they usually substitute out fat for sugar. There are lots of sweets eaten in the Mediterranean just in smaller quantities than here. For example, the Greeks eat baklava traditionally a small piece with tea or coffee in the afternoon. Every Mediterranean country has their own version of sweets often made with honey.

I was recommended this diet by a doctor but I can’t eat legumes ( my stomach revolts), dairy or grains ( bread, pasta, cheese) double revolt plus I feel bloated, tired, get headaches. I’ve looked at recipes of all the countries around the Mediterranean and they are very similar. So I am confused how this diet is healthy when my body screams the opposite.

Over and over I see people cooking/recommending high amounts of whole wheat bread/pasta. From what I've seen and read traditional Med Diets do not include these items at those levels. Or animal proteins when eaten in many cooking programs include a large portion of meat/fish/chicken. My questions are: Do traditional diets that combat chronic diseases include large servings of animal proteins in one sitting person? Should beans be a daily menu item? Second: Does the diet include large amounts of wheat flour? Such as a dinner including only one dish primarily a pasta based meal? Third: How important is variety in each meal/day? Fourth: I can't eat most nuts and seeds, can I still get benefits to the level someone who can eat nuts and seeds get? Thanks!

The Mediterranean diet does have a significant amount of bread and pasta (depending on where you are). It generally is semolina pasta, but not whole wheat. The bread is often sourdough and is somewhere between white and wheat. It is not generally genetically modified wheat which makes a difference. Again, generally, the traditional diet of the Mediterranean has low amounts of meat. They do eat more meat now, but they also generally eat more processed foods and they also have more health issues since abandoning there more traditional diet.

Another silent disease of North Americans is NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD). The mediterranean diet can help reverse or lower problems. Could you speak about this issue, please? Thank you (Ontario Canada)

I've been following for going on 3 years. Lots of benefits for me. Pro for me, I learned how to be an excellent cook. My food was passable before. It's amazing now. But could be a con under the takes too much time. I spend more money, because I can. I do recognize not everyone can--so I'd like seeing a budget video. Seasonal produce not too possible for me. I tend to do a lot of what "would be seasonal" so in the winter more winter squashes, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, apples, etc. But I don't really stick strictly to this, tbh.

Cook in bulk. Make big pots of vegetables, meats or whatever will keep well and eat it all week. Just needs heating up with your favorite sauce or olive oils.
