Well Ladies & Gentleman, Up until this year; I never heard of Percy Faith's ballad for "The Virginian" except once back in 1991 whilst surfing channels and seeing Charles Bickford in the opening credits. But I'd say for 2016, that beautiful ballad theme of 'The Virginian' has won me over and the authenticity of 'The Virginian' is magical and I guess seeing it now some 45 years after the show got canceled. I've a lot of catching up to do. I only wish Charles Bickford would have lasted a bit longer. The chemistry between him and James Drury is wonderful and very respectful for season five and six. A very well done western, different, but very believable. I'm glad I found this great moral series of honor and right against evil. I'm hooked. RMA...Bakersfield, California.....

My uncle said this credits scene reminded him of his senior year in high school, the last three months of it. All his friends that he'd gone to school with for years had left, except for him and one other (like The Virginian and Trampas) and there was a new kid that hung around with them (like Tate). They were also on some sort of internship mostly and hardly ever went to the school itself (like the Shiloh, which was hardly shown in the last season). And they had an overpowering sense that something special was coming to an inevitable end...which was what was happening in the final year of this television show.

I've met 9 of the cast at several cast reunions, two in Memphis and one to celebrate Jim Drury's birthday in Swanton, Ohio last year and have also met Doug McClure's daughters, widow, and grand daughter at his induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers this time last year. I first met Jim on his visit to Ireland in 2008.

This series is now available for viewing on Free vee. I wasn't even aware of this series until today. I just watched one with Greer Garson & James Whitmore in it from 1970 (Season 9 Episode 8) that was pretty good. Well written, which would explain how it lasted 9 seasons. But I HATE that the Virginian & "Men of Shiloh" both are listed on Comcast/Xfinity without a list of the guest stars and their bio's being made available to viewers interested in watching. The guest stars, to a large extent, on old westerns determine whether I am going to have any interest in watching the episode. It really annoys me that this information is available for other westerns but it is not available for these 2 shows. WRZ 2023-03-06

I just read an article that James Drury wrote about his time at The Virginian. Apparently, while doing a fantastic job acting, Lee J Cobb actually hated the series and left during season 4, although he was making a ton of money. Over the rest of the series they brought in various actors to portray the ranch owner finishing up with Stuart Granger. According to James Drury, Granger was a disaster and wanted the series about himself and even fired the camera crew to hire his own camera crew for the episodes he was in. James Drury said he did not like Stuart Granger at all, unlike the other people who played the ranch owners whom he liked very much. Also, I personally hated the name change in the final season from "The Virginian" to "The Men from Shiloh" and the terrible new opening theme which was actually written by Ennio Morricone, a world class Italian composer which did many themes for many movies including Good Bad and The Ugly. The original theme for "The Virginian" (which was strong and robust) was fantastic and suited the show perfectly, just like many other high-quality show themes of the time. The 1960s was actually the best decade for show themes (Hawaii Five-O, Mission Impossible, Bonanza, Star Trek, The Time Tunnel, It Takes a Thief, etc, etc). I also hated the way they changed the actors... mustaches, beards, sideburns and hair which really didn't add anything to the series but I guess it was a sign of the times, the early '70s and late 60s.

Thanks. I've been marathon watching the show recently, just started on the 5th season. Was wondering why Cobb became so invisible even though he kept getting top credit. Read that Roberta Shore left to raise a family.
