it’s even more insane that it also is really underrepresented and have a lot of inaccurate representation in media. last time I saw schizophrenia being represented it was to make a character into a villain and was really rude and totally unrealistic.

As an adult with adhd that has a child with adhd, it’s a lot more than attention and it’s not just diagnosed in children. Reducing it to a children’s disorder is a lot of the reason it’s not taken seriously in adults. It comes with problems in executive functioning, not just attention. I’m so good at so much stuff but bad at the things that require me to sit and focus on things that require steps. I can sit and do puzzles tho so I don’t have issues concentrating, I have issues concentrating and things that don’t give me dopamine.
@mimotakito1114
@mimotakito1114 Жыл бұрын
I have it too and the older I get the more I realize its largely a motivation related disorder. Our brains simply do not make enough dopamine to motivate ourselves to do many simple tasks, so we tend to fall into bad habits of binge eating, addictive behavior, and obsessiveness/hyper fixation because those actions create a rush of dopamine and other happy chemicals that our brains are largely starved of. You can see how this affects attention and focus. You cant force a machine to work if it isn’t oiled, thats how adhd brains tend to work. Its a generalization im aware as some people experience this differently but its largely true with all the people I’ve spoken with who also have the disorder. It can make jobs and school later in life and extremely difficult and in some extreme cases basically impossible as the person has a very difficult time making themselves do anything. This is the symptom that I’ve struggled the most with my entire life. I tend to binge eat, forget to eat, I lose track of time and play games for hours, study topics that I find deep interest in for too long so much so that it impedes the other tasks I need to perform. There’s also issues with memory recall as its hard for us to remember certain things, this greatly affects school and work as well as there are lots of assignments and jobs associates with these things. If someone doesn’t have a support structure ADHD and its symptoms and how people react to them can continually chip away at their self esteem, self image and even self awareness in general. I genuinely believe that ADHD is one of the most misunderstood and I accommodated disorders, as no one who doesn’t have the disorder and doesn’t study this sort of stuff doesn’t have an actual grasp on what the disorder does. These people are every where, and the lapses in cognition and missteps people with ADHD fave every day can be seen as laziness, even passive aggressiveness in some cases. I know other people with other disorders have it harder or just as hard, but as someone with ADHD and knows countless others with it, I believe that ADHD is one of the most debilitating. My two cents lol

I'm curious as to why anorexia and bulimia aren't in the same category and was wondering if you could explain. Also if you make another one of these, you should go more in-depth into eating disorders as there is not just anorexia and bulimia. There's also orthorexia, EDNOS, ARFID, diabulimia, and others, and any eating disorder can cause serious physical symptoms. For your OCD explanation, the most debilitating thing at least for me is the intrusive thoughts and many people struggle with harm thoughts which are more taboo. Mental compulsions are also just as common as physical compulsions.
@BuddyBot
@BuddyBot Жыл бұрын
So this iceberg was made by u/SpaghettiRush on Reddit, not me. Any questions about the structure or formation of the chart should be directed to him. However, what I will say is that if I ever make another serious mental health video again, it’ll likely be on autism. Eating and feeding disorders are fascinating too, but as you may be able to tell from the comments section here, I have more to correct myself on when it comes to autism spectrum disorder. And to your point about mental compulsions - I agree. I don’t have OCD, but I do have something somewhat related. I won’t go into much detail at all, but I will say that mental compulsions and overwhelming thoughts can be damn near debilitating.

Well scripted video. I will be that guy though and correct you on some of the lingo around autism, mainly cause it starts out the video and I feel is worth noting to ease confusion. Autism is labeled a neurological disorder, not a mental one, meaning the brain is physically shaped different than a normal persons. The overlap and confusion starts because many kids with autism often also develop mental disorders later in life due to social pressures, such as anxiety and depression, but it’s not a mental illness in and of itself. I can tell your intent wasn’t malicious at all though, so I feel confident I can point these things out without it feeling picky.

@@BuddyBot Also not to be nit picky but as an autistic person I like to make people aware of things. Aspergers syndrome is actually no longer a diagnosis! There’s a bunch of reasons why but quite a prevalent one is that ‘aspergers syndrome’ is named after a nazi, hans asperger, and obviously he did some shitty things. Alsoooo many autistic people dislike the puzzle piece symbol but I cbf going into that bc that’s a whooole different thing. No hate to you at all though, these are common things that people aren’t aware of and that’s okay!!

As someone with DID, I think you did a pretty good job at explaining it, but saying it's scary kind of rubbed me the wrong way (but I can understand how it could seem or be scary to some). Before I found out I had it, the amnesia for things unnerved me, and depending on what had happened while I wasn't in control, when I would be back in control, some experiences I had scared me. In my opinion, this disorder most likely saved my life (due to the childhood trauma that caused me to develop it).

Same with PTSD. As someone who’s had both, I feel that they should be higher on the list. Anorexia can be deadly and cause your organs to eat themselves, while PTSD can send the victim into a state of psychosis. Both outcomes are extremely destructive and dangerous.

I'm completely and totally addicted to caffeine. I used to drink a single caffeinated beverage from 13 to 15, but now I'm consuming an average of about two per day. In fact today I managed 3.5 caffeinated beverages. It's 9:45 PM and I'm still completely awake. I've also had issues with headaches caused by a bunch of tea being processed, and it's starting to affect my life. Take this as a warning: caffeine addiction is just like an illicit drug addiction. Also keep in mind a lot of women end up getting misdiagnosed with ADHD and or BPD when they’re really just autistic. There’s not a lot of research on female autism up until now. so we really don’t know if most of the women who are diagnosed with those disorders are actually autistic or the diagnosis was correct in the first place. I’m in that situation where I’m not sure my original diagnosis are correct. I was always told I looked like I had ADHD, but I would pass the ADHD tests with flying colors. I was also diagnosed with BPD, but the symptoms of BPD just don’t seem to match up like they used to. I think my doctor had a suspicion that the diagnosis were wrong to begin with because I was so young. I had barely turned 18 when I had my most recent diagnosis. My doctor wanted to wait until I turned 21 to give me a full diagnosis but in order to try to get state insurance he gave me the diagnosis. I still can’t get approved. So now I think that everything I’ve ever been told is a lie. 9:55

i really liked the video and i think it was done well but i wanna ramble about stuff in the comments because i like to talk about this type of stuff and i know a lot of little facts about different disorders, ive been researching disorders for years but i wont share every fact that pops into my brain or i will be typing for hours im autistic and the puzzle piece isnt used anymore, instead i saw a new symbol recently the rainbow infinity. aspergers also isnt used anymore as a diagnosis, because of more research being put into the spectrum and many use asd/autism instead as a term if they were diagnosed aspergers in the past because the term/label has history with n*zi germany in WWII and i know you didnt make the iceberg but autism and adhd both arent considered mental illness theyre both considered disabilities and autism spectrum isnt a line its more like multiple lines with different traits being diffrent severities for the depression entry there is another type: persistent depressive disorder (something im diagnosed with) which is a type of depression where it lasts years ptsd entry: i have cptsd which is a type of ptsd not often talked about, it means complex ptsd and it is a disorder caused by repeated trauma before the brain fully develops (25) social anxiety entry: there is also a rare disorder that is an extreme form of social anxiety called selective mutism where the person will be unable to talk in certain social situations ive never researched transvestic disorder but it sounds like a really strange thing to have a term for because i know lots of trans people and people assume them being transgender is that bpd also is categorized by extreme fears of abandonment, thats one of the 9 criteria and probably one of the main ones that sets it apart from the other personality disorders. i also like that you didnt say "its women who have this disorder" because many creators without the disorder say that. im a guy going through the process of being assessed for it and its not "just a woman thing" i havent looked into this too much but many people dont like hpd being a seperate diagnosis because many say it is just a modern term for female hysteria, im a man so i dont know too much about this or what psychologists opinions on this are its good you pointed out not everyone with aspd is a bad person, many will generalize mental disorders as "everyone who has them is bad and you should be scared" and stuff along those lines did: my boyfriend has did and its a disorder caused by really severe childhood trauma dpd: a bpd "favourite person" can look like dpd but not necessarily be dpd i have more i can share but ive already typed a lot

just started the video and right off the bat, i'm seeing some outdated information about autism. first, aspergers syndrome is an outdated and ableist term that was removed from the dsm in 2013, and is now called autism. rett syndrome is something else entirely. the puzzle piece is also a hateful symbol to the autistic community due to its association with autism speaks which is a very bad organization. autism isnt a mental disorder and is instead a developmental disability. the correct word is traits, not symptoms. no hate to you, just constructive criticism. and i hope this isnt weird to say but youre really really cute. edit: i also wish you wouldve added that there has been a fight to have odd removed from the dsm because its usually a misdiagnosis of something else and it adds an unfair "bad kid" label to kids who just need more help than others. but i totally get that you wanted to keep it short and its not really well known knowledge lol edit 2: fun fact, the woman who created dbt, marsha m. linehan, actually has bpd and created it because she was misdiagnosed as a teen and she knew there needed to be help and understanding for people like her. edit 3: so happy you went over dpd!! nobody ever knows it when i tell them i have it and it drives me nuts edit 4: theres a girl i know who has coprolalia tourettes and someone asked her a question one time and she yelled "WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD SEX?" in response lmao edit 5: capgras is pronounced cuh-GRAW. french people, man. edit 6: just finished the video and subscribed! great video, can't wait to see more from you!

I don’t think people will care about this opinion but I find it problematic on labeling of certain conditions as “mental illnesses”, specifically autism, adhd and some other stuff you mentioned, “illness” implies an ability to be cured, when it’s more of an affliction, a veteran who looses his leg in a war isn’t physically ill, he’s afflicted and disabled, unless you mean to imply autism, adhd and other afflictions, can be cured, I would discourage this phrasing, it does matter

I should have been clearer on this one, my apologies. “Transvestic Disorder” is the word used by some (not all) psychologists to describe this certain type of paraphilia, which is a larger series of mental health conditions. Not everyone who cross-dresses meets the criteria to be diagnosed with the paraphilia, and thus do not have the mental disorder I described simply because of their lifestyle choice. Kind of like how not every “clean freak” has OCD or not every hyperactive child has ADHD (those are just off the top of my head). I really appreciate the comment. I try to be as respectful as possible and do the best research I can into the topics I cover, however if there’s any area I missed or got wrong, I always love to see people point that out to me. im personally a bit bitter because of this video due to the fact that i do not understand how these disorders are categorized in these tiers. is it based on how well known they are, how outrageous they sound, or how much they impact/ruin someone's life? as a borderline myself, i feel as though it is unfair to not disclose that all of these disorders are very serious, especially personality disorders.

I wouldn't say Autism, ADHD, or Dyslexia are a mental illness, these are conditions you are born with. You aren't born with a mental illness but you are born neurodivergent which is what Autism, ADHD and Dyslexia are. More people die from Anorexia and Bulimia than any other mental illness. I have diagnosis of 9 of the mental illnesses you mentioned plus an additional 4 that are undiagnosed but they have been brought up to me by my psychiatrist. Guess I'm truly fcuked! Great video, I really enjoyed it.

21:54 I’m going to disagree with the notion that all personality disorders are genetic. Yes there usually is a genetic component to personality disorders but they usually have to have significant trauma or neglect or abuse for the disorder to manifest. I want to argue that everyone has an equal opportunity to have any mental illness that can manifest through trauma. Think about how a “normal human” can have a “normal life” without any mental health issues, but then they go through significant trauma. That one situation could be the catalyst for those disorders but I think everyone has an equal opportunity of having any personality disorder.

@marshaemetsainen

@@invictus2386 I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think not everything that messes with your serotonin - has to be addictive. For example, SSRI medicine can be taken for months or years, but they don't have a physical addictive effect at all. But a mental addiction is another subject, I kinda think you can get yourself addicted to anything this way.

@@BuddyBot Firstly autism is not a mental Illness, which I do not blame you for since I don't think you made the iceberg and there's a lot of things that aren't technically mental illnesses. Autism Spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder, the spectrum refers to how different it can present in each person. Asperger's is not the most common type of autism, it's not even a diagnosis anymore it was taken out of the dsm in 2013. Asperger's is named after the Nazi Hans Asperger who sent disabled children to their deaths. Asperger's was only ever used to push eugenics. Retts syndrome is no longer classed as an autism spectrum disorder, it is completely separate. When researching autism it's really important to check the dates of which the studies and articles were published, to make sure that the information is still relevant and considered true. Autism has a long and complicated history. Another thing to mention is the use of the puzzle piece symbol, it was originally created with an image of a crying child, depicting autism as something negative. It is most commonly associated with Autism Speaks, which is actually a hate group that seeks to eliminate autism as a whole and has a history of painting autism horrifically as the destroyer of families and all things good. Search for the "I am autism" commercial by autism speaks to see this for yourself. Know that I do not wish to put you down, my only goal is to educate everyone willing to listen, thank you.

36:42 I had a fear that my gender had been changed at birth and it’s not related to being transgender because I am a women and was born a woman. During puberty I was terrified that I was boy because I was developmentally behind from most of my peers. (IF YOU ARE A CHILD PLEASE STOP READING) (contains information not suitable for children) I also have downstairs lips that were bigger than what I thought was “normal” even though there really is no standard. I thought that I had a penis at birth and it was just chopped off and then the balls sack just was there forever. I never actually believed that I was meant to be a boy I think there was just a huge phobia that I was different and nobody told me about it. In all honesty it didn’t really have anything to do with gender. I just felt like I was in the wrong place and that I wasn’t supposed to be there. I wasn’t supposed to be the person that I was. I’ve grown out of that fear of being a boy years ago after I finally started getting my more womanly shape but I still can’t shake the feeling that I don’t belong here. Like I was a mistake. I had never told anyone about that fear until now. I feel like it’s probably more common than we think and nobody talks about it.

Beep boop 🤖 that’s why I’m called Buddy BOT. In all seriousness though, I agree completely. Looking back, I don’t think I saw enough value in this channel to double/triple check my info and make sure the videos were top-notch. After all I had maybe 20 subs when I made this. That’s not to say that I “didn’t care.” I just didn’t think “hey, this video’s going to get thousands of views, I should make sure it’s all perfect” when I got ready to upload. That is entirely my fault, and I acknowledge that completely. I should have put in the extra effort despite a lack of confidence in my channel. I am currently working on a way to solve this issue without deleting the video. I would delete it, but I think it serves as a good reference point to see where I was at - something to look back at years down the line. But If you care to give me a second chance, look out for an update on this in the future. Thanks for the comment dude. Much love

Psychologists don't diagnose they aren't medical doctors that would be psychiatrists the DSM is psychiatry not psychology. We dont place MH conditions into tiers! Any can be severe it's not a competition, lots of the things mentioned are not used diagnoses, many of them overlap in factors to the point that the whole approach of DSM is under heavy criticism. This is a really unhelpful video. Nothing like the reality of how we would diagnose. The personality segment on borderline PD was very outdated. I wouldn't read anything into this video if you are seeking mental health information. I know you spent a lot of time on this but as a qualified clinician please I'd ask that you not imply this is serious or accurate information.

@@trinityanderson859 that's dependence, and you get that because you use these substances as a crutch. You do that because there are problems in your personal life that you aren't addressing and it's easier to commit to a soothing chemical alternative than it is to actually get in the mindset necessary to deal with those problems. It's not an LSD problem and it's not a cannabis problem. If you have a problem with these substances, I'm sorry to say, but that problem is almost certainly you.
