Absolutely amazing! I am a 30 year chef and to be perfectly honest... not gonna say many kitchen & industry people wouldn't smile and nod at many points through this film. As well, everything was so well done. Fresh new story, great social commentary, wildly accurate portrayal of how our craft has been compromised by social media, critics, and people just calling themselves 'foodies' without any actually knowledge of what we put in to and sacrifice for our craft. This is by far one of the best movies I've seen this year. Perfect blend of comedy, thriller, dialogue, and stellar acting. Really cannot say enough. I'll leave it with... the trailer doesn't do the movie justice and you think you know what this movie will be.... until you don't.

You're totally right, but as someone who is on the other side of the restaurant, I actually think that another point of the movie was that the "craft" is sometimes taken to an absurd when instead of going to a restaurant you're going to an art gallery or a museum, which makes it a totally different experience

In case you are interested here are the restaurants that are "mocked" in The Menu: *Noma* in Copenhagen (The mention of the “perfectly unripe” strawberry is from the chef of *Noma),* *Blue Hill* at Stone Barns, *Mugaritz* in the Basque Country, *The Willows* in the Pacific Northwest, chef Francis Mallmann’s private island *La Isla* off the coast of Patagonia. The spice racks are replicated from the kitchen at the now closed restaurant *El Bulli,* house made granola in gift bags are from *Eleven Madison Park.* The single raw scallop perched on a craggy rock surrounded by carefully tweezed seaweed and algae is a replicate of a dish at *Atelier Crenn.* Crenn developed the menu for the movie. Finally, the amuse-bouche served on the boat is a reference to a signature dish from chef Thomas Keller at *Per Se.*
@Opalmiller192 жыл бұрын
Same article- “This isn’t the first revelation regarding the restaurant industry’s dark underbelly. It’s exactly the kind of harsh culture that The Menu, which features an uncannily similar restaurant, satirizes. The New York institution Blue Hill, which is run by chef Dan Barber, was recently accused of brutal working conditions, such as allegedly mishandling a rape allegation. Mario Batali, who once owned a slew of restaurants such as Del Posto, recently settled two assault lawsuits. Edouardo Jordan reopened JuneBaby this year; his popular Seattle restaurant closed last summer when the majority of his staff walked out in the wake of a Seattle Times investigation into accusations of sexual misconduct and unwanted touching.” men really act like they have un-warranted entitlement if they are paying, a manager is NOT entitled to your body and having lost a reference is better than having mind and body at war for many years over being taken advantage of, make change in your situation sooner than later if they continue because if they don’t learn, they continue doing it, talk to them clear as day and strong, do not make him want revenge as men tend to, show him that ‘you can’t believe this way of being is okay in his mind’ don’t let the boundaries slip if you know they are not a good person or do worse things to others, std ridden creeps are the hardest to get rid of, leave the place even if it means losing one reference.
@Opalmiller192 жыл бұрын
My bad, I missed a part, the movie is about an island private chef’s menu. I’ve worked on Island’s off my main island before- summer before this, they all were very bad with t4’s, paying on time, enough staff on, new training of people they hired and not taking care if they took breaks during the twelve hour shifts. I worked at two good places and one semi-strange place. The places all had their own strange details like bosses with neurotic comments when you brought up schedules or beef with the other restaurants. I lived in a tent at first, looking for places, the island has empty houses in winter but summer there is nothing, even for the workers. I worked two jobs. I was living in a tent cause the restaurant that hired me, insisted I move out there (and I went over two islands by ferry and subletted my suite for the summer) they had told me I would be a ‘desert server’ instead I was the dishwasher/garbage person and everyone acted above me and the accommodations were NOT the ‘glamping’ tent they showed us, it was a normal tent behind the bottle recycling and garbage area and there wasn’t enough room in there to properly store clothes because of the air mattress that would deflate each day. They got very mad when I caught Covid, they sent me off the island and then called me and said I was fired and I couldn’t live on property. I had all my belongings there so I returned with w tent and money to pay someone to stay on their property. Thankfully there was lots of good hippie’s left over from the seventies who also hated the rude restaurant owner and told me all the locals know del Lerena is terrible and Forage Cafe is where I should’ve worked instead. I posted online in a group for that island saying I had money to rent land for tent. A professor let me stay on his land while I got my job at a hippie smoothie place that also served like chia cups. Then I found a trailer with a bathroom inside for rent. The owner helped me move in fast, cause the summer in 2021 had strange storms The weird one was a coke head owned pizzeria, he gave me no breaks he left me in charge of four 16 year olds. The 15 year old got him to make sure we got breaks, he also got us lemonade on the house and dollar pay raise. He sold pizzas for 20 each and had five people on staff so tips weren’t much. My morning job was at a juice bar by a hippie store that sold clothes and flowers, there I got more tips since there was only three on staff. However he started putting me on opening alone, I barely understood how to make the coconut milk and oat milk using their blenders and the glass jars 🫙 for filling up often almost dropped. There i got food after shift like the pizzeria and a drink too, cause renting a trailer for the summer cost me my first paycheque, I didn’t have money for food rlly, which cost double since it was brought over by two ferries. So I ate corn chips and salsa and coconut water on days off, I sat on the beach and read books I got from the free store and used my tips on new clothes made here and on rent at home- I made so much working two jobs I was able to pay rent at home until winter.

By the way, if visiting a gulf island BOOK YOUR HOTEL OR CAMPING TRIP MONTHS IN ADVANCE, GET TO YOUR FERRY HOURS IN ADVANCE AND DURING SUMMER SEASON ALWAYS CHECK THE WAITING TIMES AS TO CATCH LAST FERRY IT SOMETIMES TAKES FIVE HOURS. SHOW UP FOR RESERVATIONS FOR FERRY THIRTY MINUTES EARLY OR ITS VOID AND YOULL HAVE TO WAIT AT BACK AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CREDIT CARDS, CASH AND DRY FOOD IN CASE YOU HAVE TO SLEEP IN CAR AT FERRY TERMINAL AND CHECK CLOSING TIMES OF CAFE AND STORES

And don’t forget to tip your waitress cause the people in back usually get twenty percent. If you want, tip person and also do the credit machine one Secondly, if you are gonna run out of money, don’t tip fifty, tip less and eat chips and salsa instead of every meal out. Don’t make the service people pay for your shitty finincial decisions then expect others to pay for your lack of finicial literacy

@HeyYouImAzu2 жыл бұрын
I know some people like to say the ending was too predictable but if you truly believe it was predictable I think that fits with parts of what the movie touches on, the inability for critics to ever truly be satisfied and how some people think watching makes them qualified to actually do. Maybe I'm crazy but it feels like they knew exactly what they were doing with the ending and honestly I found it beautiful.

I don't see anyone hating it, though it has very little going for it.

The script, acting, direction, & subject matter make a HUGE, HUGE metaphor of food, eating & preparing...it touches upon history & troubled lives & food it what binds them altogether & yet tears them apart. Life, "it's part of The Menu."

Impeccable acting all around. Never knew Hong Chau before but she is excellent in this and brings the character to a higher level. Cooking the cheeseburger is such a great scene. The light returned for a moment

We watched this last night. I didn't know what to expect...and WOW! The acting, the pacing...kept me glued to my seat for the entire movie. I literally didn't know what would happen next. I'm still thinking about it the next day.

My friends mentioned this movie tonight at dinner mockingly. I hadn’t heard of it and thought it sounded ridiculous. They described it as “A bunch of food critiques go to a restaurant and get murdered.” I compared it to the similarly ridiculous premise of 12 Feet Deep or whatever that movie was about the women being trapped in a pool for a weekend. Then I saw online that it was a satirical comedy thriller, which sounded right up my alley. I watched it without watching the trailer. That was a great move! I really enjoyed it. Obviously it’s too late for this one, but I recommend watching more movies without watching the trailer first. It was quite thrilling.

as weird as it sounds i actually felt for the chef, i felt bad when he explained he didn’t find joy in making food for others any more and when erin asked him to make her a cheeseburger it made him feel that joy again and i was happy for him. my mom said something to me the other day that reminded me of this movie she said that i use to love cooking, trying new recipes and discovering my own and now not so much.. i really hope i do find that love again. i love seeing the different ways people react to my cooking 😊

I might be met with a lot of negativity in the comments, but I'm still going to take the shot: You eat to live, not the other way round. Food is for survival with a blend of taste so you can also enjoy it. You don't have to go over the top with it.

I’m a moviehead. So I see similarities and themes almost immediately. Good movie but not s original as some commenters say. 20min in I couldn’t get “Midsommar” out of my mind. And when the movie ended, it was impossible not to see the inspiration of Midsommar… huge inspiration. Don’t misunderstand me though, good movie still.
