Day 4: Surah An-Nisa by Sh Dr Yasir Qadhi * He sums up the theme in this lecture, can’t cover surah completely in such short time * Then highlight key messages from each sura * Mid to late madni surah, revealed after al Imran * Many laws about family, society make up. Extended family is whole humanity * First ayaa tone of the sura, we are all one global family, we all go back to same parents. Only Taqwa criteria for one to be better than other which only الله سبحنه وتعلى can gauge, not we as people * 4 give women dowries graciously, if woman willingly gives back then ok but WO any pressure * Orphans are talked about. Don’t give money to kids till they are mature, when they become responsible only then, test them before giving verse 6 * Using Orphans money is major sin, such people eating from hell * 7-12 laws of inheritance. Sh studied these laws for two years in Madina!!! * In pre islam women inherited nothing, rather they were treated as property. Islam changed the paradigm * 32 don’t challenge the fractions of inheritance * Companions asked صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم why women get half of the share. Today question why half and not full. Change in culture which is always changing * Very explicit, man can’t demand mehar back * 22-24 Long list of mahrams whom we can’t marry * Forbidding extramarital relations * 34 Lot of controversy raised. Men are the protectors of woman. Whose nashooz i.e. disloyalty you fear then step by step approach. Last optional step discipline them * صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم gave whole sermon in masjid nabvi when ladies complained men treating them badly * True Aalim vs student of knowledge literal application vs spirit of ayaa to situation * Some gender roles are from Shariah and other gender roles are cultural. We need to make this distinction * 129-130 “you can’t do justice to your wives....” verse about polygamous but applies for monogamous situation as well * If both in couple are sincere to keep the marriage then الله سبحنه وتعلى will protect the marriage. All considering divorce must check what in their heart??? * You can’t be Muslim if you reject صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم. We get details from صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم * 78-79: pre destination. Hypocrites used to blame صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم for bad. 79 says bad happens due to our own sins. We can’t attribute any bad to الله سبحنه وتعلى. * Calamity if we ask forgiveness it removes our sin, blessing from الله سبحنه وتعلى for hardship * صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم asked Abdullah bin Masood to recite. At 41 صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم started crying..... Why he صلى الله عليه و اله وسلم cried, to be witness against sinners who did not repent * 110 Don’t make a mockery of repentance!!! Conditions to be met for forgiveness * Private sins الله سبحنه وتعلى will forgive. But sins impacting others big deal * 37 forbids stinginess * Keep secrets of others * 85 positive intercession. Patch up matters between people * 86 respond to a greeting with better or at least same greeting. Respond to non Muslims also in better way, our religion builds better society * Secret gatherings are not good most of the time. Only ok if to bring good * 148 الله سبحنه وتعلى does not like publicizing of sins of others. Only when someone is wronged. * 36 one of most important verse about rights. Be good to each and everyone around you, long list ..... * 82 why dont we ponder on the message of Quran.... inconceivable how fluently messages transition topics seamlessly -> no translation can’t capture that

I was praying the Taraweeh a few years ago and our Imam was reciting surat an- Nisa. I had this strong feeling my heart filled with exciment like never before. The smooth transition and the flow of language you just talked about had just clicked in. I came home and listened to Sh. Shuraim reciting the Surah (which i really recommend to you too) which even moved me more. I listened to the transilation and tried to memorize the Surah. I can say i had more Iman after that. I agree with you. We can get basic understanding from reading English version but when Sheikh picks out the major themes it puts more light on understanding the surah. I've read surah Al Imran so many times but yesterday he explained it so well that when I read it again I absolutely connected with it. This kind of summary is what I yearned for over years from a few ulama around me especially during Ramadhan. I never found it until now. It is like this is especially packaged for me and me alone. We have had word to word translations of the Noble Qur'an, but this seems to go deeper and certain meanings seem to appear clearer. For me, I would remain glued to my phone throughout this Ramadhan. My only wish is about how to package and treasure the entire month's presentation. Words cannot express my absolute satisfaction over the recitation of this great reciter. Is there any way I can have his recitation of the entire Qur'an? May Allah bless you immensely for this effort.

The Quran also tells us to obey the Prophet Muhammad (Surah an-Nisa verse 59), to take what he allows and refrain from what he prohibits (Surah al-Hashr verse 7), to follow his judgments (Surah an-Nisa verse 65), and to abide by his decisions (Surah al-Ahzab verse 36). It also tells us that some of its verses are ambiguous in meaning (Surah Al-e-Imran verse 7), and that the Prophet Muhammad will explain the meaning of the revelation (Surah an-Nahl verse 44). All of this is the domain of the Sunna. The Sunna records what the Prophet Muhammad said, did, and silently allowed. It shows us how he put the Quran into action. It tells us what he commanded, allowed, prohibited, judged, and decided. And it informs us how he explained the Quran. The Sunna is an important and necessary source of Islamic law. So what do the Quran and Sunna have to say about women’s dress? “O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.” (Quran 7:26) “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31). “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful

I don't understand why people are complaining about the style and methodology being used in this summary. The sheikh has mentioned this at the beginning. This summary is exceptional in it's style by giving a broad perspective on what the message is. Evidently some things will be left out or gone over briefly. This the point. Ideally we should try to read and find a translation which helps us understand it even better.
