Jon, I have a request. You should look at the messed up origins of The Night Before Christmas. A 1968 cartoon special of the same name implied that in 1822, Clement Clark Moore wrote the poem for his pneumonia-stricken daughter Charity after Moore couldn't get the book about Saint Nicholas she wanted for Christmas. Let's see just how historically accurate that special really was.

I actually had been curious about the origin of gargoyles ever since first watching the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mostly because so many other people who watched it began arguing about the scene where Frollo grabbed the gargoyle's neck and it came to life. The main argument I heard was the demon warder one and viewed Frollo as a demon for his actions before breaking on purpose to let him fall directly into hell. The fascinating concepts and conversations for children to have

I've heard about the original gargoyle statues being used as gutter pipes and possibly driving away evil spirits. Although, I never knew a lot of the gargoyle statues were actually called grotesques, nor of the other supposed purposes. Still cool either way. Also, I'm glad Disney's "Gargoyles" series got a major shout-out here. It's definitely one of my top favorite Disney shows.

I remember when I did research are the history of gargoyles, and the story of Gargouille (which is basically a spin on the French word), a monster from French lore described as a massive serpent with the power to drink rivers dry, some classify it as a dragon that was slain by a French hero, but most of the sources I found implied it was merely sealed away until some unknown disaster freed it.

I HAVE thought about Gargoyles before. I’ve always just be told “They guard the building and all who live in it”. Which is why I’m constantly surprised people theorize on whether or not Quasimoto is insane or not. He isn’t, the Gargoyle just know he is a kid who needs positive influences in his life and that’s why they talk to him while Frolo is away.

This is totally unrelated, but can you do a video on a game Disney made called Twisted Wonderland? The game is set in a magical academy called Night Raven College, where players assume the role of a protagonist (the "player") who has been mysteriously transported to this world where the Disney villains are seen as the heros. The school is divided into several dormitories, each inspired by Disney villains and their stories. These dorms include characters like Riddle Roseheart (based on Alice in Wonderland, and this character is based on the Queen of hearts), Leona (based on The Lion King, and this character is based off of scar), and others from other famous Disney films, which includes the little mermaid, Aladdin, Snow white, Hercules, and sleeping beauty. The protagonist's main goal is to try to find a way back to their world but they're journey is way more complicated than that. Honestly my explanation doesn't do this game justice and you'd have to check it out yourself. I know the likelihood of you covering this game is practically zero, but if you ever do, I'd love to see it. Love your videos by the way keep it up. I love to freak out my friends at school by telling them the messed up origins of their favourite Disney shows and other stuff.

Hey there, Jon !!!...I am an Indian, i live in india... And its really fascinating to me that in india we have our own indian treditional gargoyles (or grotesque technically) called as" kirti mukha" which are like monstrous lion faced looking creatures (with no body attached) on top of hindu temple's gates in india. And they believed to feed on the sins of the devotees, so that the devotees enter into the temple completely free from their sins... Isn't that absolutely fascinating !!!... I don't know why but its really fascinating, and intersting and exciting and cool to me !!!...

I've never actually heard of the ones that are decorative water deflection systems. Having something like that on a building that just looks like a cute cat or dog, or maybe a pretty bird sounds like a nice architectural feature. Ideally with something below that turns the rain flow into a kind of seasonal fountain or directs the water to an area where some nice-looking plants grow.

This remind me of one of my favorite book series, the school for good and evil. There's a scene in the first book where agatha snuck over to the evil school because she was misplaced and ends up on the roof as it rains, and she get chased into a corner before she remembers a phrase that a mentor told her and she fell into its mouth, being spit out to her destination. It was really fun because the gargoyles had red eyes and breathed fire and were so realistic that the scene still gives me chills.

The version I read as a boy in the Time Life series "the enchanted world" was that critically the creature was called "the gargler". It lived in a well (sometimes a river) and the water it spewed was an acid/poison. So in that one the gargoyle connection is more clear.

Excellent video! I vehemently agree about how underrated and under appreciated Gargoyles among other artistic styles of architecture are. It looks unanimous that Disney's Gargoyles is a criminally underrated series. Alongside keeping away evil spirits and making christianity appealing to pagans, at the same time, I think Gargoyles also served as symbolic and spiritual blackmail in case any pagans who had converted might have second thoughts. In Charles Gounod's opera adaptation of "Faust", when Marguerite goes to pray for being pregnant out of wedlock, the devil, Mephistopheles brings the gargoyles and grotesques to life and they all proceed to mock her, using her faith against her.

There would not be a Jim Henson's creature shop if the legendary Kermit the Frog creator had not built so many wonderful, grotesque, appropriate Muppets of all kinds of backgrounds. Many movies, not least the Star Wars movie series, featured the fantastic Muppets created. Or the Sesame Street show. Or even the Muppet Show and movies. IIRC, E.T. was created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Personally, I would expect that if any gargoyles were created again, they should look like Muppets.

I never thought about it up until now... I guess the reason for it could have been that, back in the days of Rome or Greece, their architects had full time training in artistry as well as designs, along with a budget that can afford to toss out failed patterns. Meanwhile the Midevil Architects only had access to design and weren't artisans of the same level, and kings couldn't afford to throw them out, or were convinced to keep them because of their sons going through the Phase. Or it's possible that they would've been epic in color, but the rain is... well... water.
