Thanks for watching SoloFamGangArmyWarriors! Hope you liked this episode and the origins of Paul Bunyan! I had a lot of fun during the research portion of this one. I thought it was hilarious/awesome that our boy Paul may have actually been a real dude AND that the stories about him basically served as a gentle hazing for greenhorns in the woods 😂 Learning that simple camaraderie between “blue collar” workers gave birth to an American legend is one of the many reasons I love the series. Don’t forget to comment YOUR thoughts down below along with any recommendations you have for future episodes!

I’m a 6th generation logger. I grew up hearing all the Paul Bunyan stories in logging camps from Canada to North Carolina. My Grandpa even loved to tell the new guys that he had worked for Paul’s grandson when he started and had “Bunyan” carved on his ax handle as proof the he had got the ax from his grandson.

That sounds cool. Being a logger sounds like an interesting profession, as is listening to the stories as they would have originally been told. Like listening to a bard sing the Iliad in Greece.

We literally studied Baron Münchhausen in grade school because literally everyone and their grandma knows about him and his exaggerated stories here in germany. Like, as far as I remember, his stories were so exaggereted, the germans had no word to describe how insanely made up they are so they invented the term 'Lügengeschichte' (Lie Story).

When I was in elementary school we used to learn about the folktales of America: Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Johnny Appleseed, and John Henry. Unfortunately by the time my younger brother was in school they no longer taught these folktales. I remember learning them in the 3rd-4th grade so I just naturally assumed he learned them too so one day I asked him who his favorite American folktales legend was and he replied by telling me that he’s learned of Johnny Appleseed but no one else. It’s kinda sad that more and more people are forgetting these legends

I grew up loving the stories of Paul Bunyan no matter if the story sounded vague or not. My favorite is during a winter Paul and babe walked through a storm leaving their foot prints behind and as soon spring came we got what we now call Minnesota the land of 10,000 lakes.

Johnny Appleseed is based on Bill Brasky. All except for the parts about planting Apple Trees and not raping men.

As a New Zealander, I had heard of John Bunyan only through popular media like The Simpsons, and didn't know anything about him other than he was a huge folkloric lumberjack. It was cool to learn about American folktales - more please! I'd also be curious to see you cover Maui from Polynesian folklore.
