"His sister, Hestia, would tend to the ever burning hearth fire in the center of his grand hall, which, unless I'm missing something, is a pretty lame job for a goddess to have." Yeah, Jon, you missed something. That ever burning hearth fire was the fire that kept all fires in the homes of the mortals that warmed them and cooked their food. If this fire ever went out, mankind would parish. Okay, yeah, the person poking a stick at a fire does seem lame for a goddess, but would you want Jane-Nobody watching over the fire of life for mankind? She also had another important job, (at least as far as the Gods were concerned, and more suitable for the stature of a Goddess,) Hestia was responsible for presiding over every and all sacrifices. So, if you were sacrificing a few oxen for Zeus's birthday, you had better hope Hestia was attending the party, otherwise Zeus isn't getting his sacrifice, and we know how that can ruin someone's day (or life.)
@SabbyCat524 жыл бұрын
This. She's so easily overlooked when the understanding of the importance of the hearth is missing!
@lilchristuten75684 жыл бұрын
So she guards the thing that the "gods" punished a titan for stealing and giving to humans, the thing that if the "gods" had their way humans would not have... yeah an oh so important job. There is also the fact that it would be pointless if on of those "gods" wasn't such a complete pansy and didn't morn for half a year just because she can't go see her daughter, so again really useful job.
@skyden241954 жыл бұрын
@@lilchristuten7568 not quite sure where you where going with your comment, but I do think a couple of things should be made clear. 1. Fire existed before mankind and was around at the dawn of man's birth, however fire was to mankind as fire is to animals today. Prometheus stole the secrets of fire to give to mankind, giving mortals the ability to utilize fire. 2. The Goddess Demeter only mourns three months of the year... equal to the amount of pomegranate seeds her daughter, Persephone, ate from the fruit given to her by Hades. 😉
@lilchristuten75684 жыл бұрын
@@skyden24195 If mankind couldn't utilize fire (like animals can't as you said) then they couldn't make build fires to keep them warm at night and in the cold months and therefore that ever-burning fire is useless, so, again if the "gods" had their way her job would be useless.
@skyden241954 жыл бұрын
@@lilchristuten7568 no, you misunderstood. Hestia was in charge of the hearth AFTER mankind learned how to create and utilize fire. There would not be a hearth for her to tend to until then. Hestia's job(s) seem to more or less come into existence as mankind began to become "intelligent" more or less. Take her job of residing over sacrifices, until humans understood the concept of sacrifices to the Gods, Hestia would not have had that job. It does really seem, in the Greek mythos, that Hestia is a very reserved and humble Goddess, especially compared to the rest of the Gods in general. All the rest are always shown to be hot tempered, violent, vengeful, often lustful. I'll admit, the first time I had heard of Hestia, she was over all described as "staying out of the limelight." Most religious acknowledgment of her was in the form of small statuettes and/or alters in the homes of the Greeks. There have been a lot of women throughout history who's job it was to look after home and hearth. Would you call their jobs "unimportant?" If so, you might have more issues than Greek Mythology. ;-]

Hey Jon! I have a few ideas for you! I’m like super super into mythology of all backgrounds and while learning about the different myths I’ve discovered some parallels in fables and fairytales. For example in the Greek myth of Helen of Troy the APPLE thrown says “for the most beautiful”, some translations said “for the fairest of them all”. Another one from Norse mythology. Not sure the exact name of the myth but look up “Thor looses his hammer” but it has some parallels with red riding-hood. You should look into it, it’s super interesting

I thought the Cyclops and Hekatonkeries were the sons of Uranus and Gaia and had been trapped in Tarterus by Uranus and that brought about Gaia's first prophecy of Uranus's downfall.

I love these mythology video’s ESPECIALLY this one on Zeus showing how he was as a father, husband and ruler (terrible at all three) Just some small notes: - the cyclopses and hecatoncheires where Kronoses brothers not Zeus’s - Hermes was Zeus’s messenger - iris was hera’s messenger Just some comments from a mythology nerd LOVE this series and every other messed up series keep up the great work PLEASE do Artemis she is one of my favorite Greek goddesses 😁 and cant wait for you to break down Zeus even more

16:07 In another version I know, Helen of Troy is the daughter of Zeus and the goddess of retribution, Nemesis. Zeus assaulted her disguised as a swan while Nemesis took form of a goose whilst running away from him. Afterwards, she laid an egg which the shepherd found it and then brought the egg to Leda which will hatch Helen and then Leda adopted the resulting child as her own daughter.

I had 3 black cats that were triplets and i named them Athena, Apollo and Artemis. One boy and 2 girls. I also had a cat born with a broken tail in the shape of a lightning bolt and named him Zeus. Also my first two cats were Khufu and Nefertiti. I had them all at the same time. Khufu had a son named Atsu and Nefertiti had a brother named Rufus.

Frankly, I'd love to see an episode, here or otherwise, listing all of Zeus' "conquests", from wives to actual lovers, to the rapes, to cases the gals didn't know what was going on. About Alcmene... that's twice bad. The story I'm familiar with, her husband was off at war for some time, then word came the war is over and her husband was on his way home. When he came home, she greeted him like a dutiful wife and that night became pregnant. Next day, no sign of her husband until later in the day... when he reveals he just now reached home. The man she thought was her husband the night before was actually Zeus. And so Heracles was born. But what makes this twice sick? Simple Alcmene is the granddaughter of Perseus. Yes THAT Perseus, son of Zeus. He boinked his own mortal great-granddaughter. And of course Perseus wasn't concieved either, as his mom ?was it Danae? was locked in a tower by her father who heard a prophesy that his grandson would overthrow him. Zeus visited her while in a form of golden coins that rained down on her.

He banged two of his sisters. Wouldn’t say i’m surprised
@Katzztar4 жыл бұрын
@@viridia1526 Well that's why I said "mortal" there, some like to point out that as gods, DNA thing doesn't work like with mortals, so no worry about inbreeding. BUT I say that A- gods are held to different laws than mortals and B- even in some cultures that allow cousins to marry or even siblings like in history (squinty eye to Egypt), parent/child or even grandparent/grandchild is seen as different and a serious no-no.
@Katzztar4 жыл бұрын
@@viridia1526 On the issue of gods are not held to same laws/rules as mortals. Remember the tragedy of Oedipus. On discovering she accidentally married her own son (whom she was thought dead and he thought he was son of a shepherd), Jocasta hanged herself, and then Oedipus blinded himself, showing mortals had very different views on that type of incest.... and that Zeus was an ass for not caring about it because (to misquote) "It's good to be the king ... of the gods"
@durrangodsgrief6503 Жыл бұрын
@@Katzztar yeah I dont think oedipus situation can be equivalent to the king of the gods knocking on the door also you do know the relation between alcmene and amphitrion right they were first cousins like alcmene uncle or aunt was his dad
@Katzztar Жыл бұрын
@@durrangodsgrief6503 It's one thing to marry a cousin (as bad as we see it now, back then it was common) but it's entire level to impersonate someone so you can bang your own great-granddaughter. Even in times that practiced cousin-marry-cousin, going after your child, grandchild or great-grandchild was not accepted.

Zeus is also in charge of Xenia, or "Guest Friendship", where mortals would have to allow ANYONE who comes to their house, access to their bath, food and clothing before the host could ask the guest their name and business. Once the guest left, the host and their family was allowed to stay at the guest's home in return. If any part of this was not followed, Zeus would allow tragedy to befall the person who didn't follow the custom

I thought I heard in one version of the myth of Zeus was when Athena was born out of his forehead his ability to control his sexual impulses was taken away from him and was within Athena and was the reason she was a virgin goddess.
