The Messy History of the "first" Super Sentai 🔍 Toku Misconceptions

What is the first Super Sentai? Which shows are still considered Sentai? Which ones are no longer Sentai? All of these questions, and possibly more, are answered in this installment of Cammi's Circus! Clarification from Glenn: “While Ohranger’s anniversary celebration did treat all previous shows as part of a unified franchise, it’s worth noting that its anniversary logo simply referred to this franchise as the ‘Sentai Series’. The first time the re-unified franchise was called Super Sentai on-screen was in Timeranger’s anniversary special, as far as we can tell.”

@@iMoevious No, his colour scheme is based off of the Gorangers' first Zord, Varidorin, as it is white with RBYPG colours, if it were big one, it'd be RBGP, which is not Zenkaiser's colour scheme. This is why Secchan looks like Varidorin and why the Geartlinger looks like Secchan.

The first tokusatsu show to be considered a "Sentai" and more specifically the first Super Sentai show was obviously Goranger, that's pretty obvious. But if you really want to look at the birth of Sentai as a concept, then you gotta look into not live-action toku shows, but into anime, and more specifically Tatsunoko's Gatchaman. Gatchaman was the real birth of Super Sentai as a premise for a TV show.

Actually you may also want to look at Shotaro Ishunomori's 1964 manga Cyborg 009, which clearly was also a base for the sentai's concept (while his other manga Skullman would serve as a base for Kamen Rider's concept).

Since 1995 Gorenger and JAKQ belong to it. Which makes no sense coz JAKQ and Gorenger Apparate de during the season 10 anniversary of Sentai.. They definitely belonged to it since 85-86 instead of 95

Great video! I already knew about the on and off status of Goranger and JAKQ but there were some details I hadn't heard about before this video, especially with Dairanger and it's good to know there's finally one concise video to bust every myth that's still spreading around.

I dont think rights was the reason. Since Toei and Ishinomori were making Kamen Rider Black/RX together at the same time Liveman and Turboranger were airing. More likely it was just cause Toei loves the promotion that anniversaries give them. So by labeling Liveman as the 10th anniversary they got to milk the 10th anniversary again.

First sentai is technically Cyborg 009, also by Shotaro Ishinomori. Gatchaman would also count as it was 72

Every fanfic writer has to be careful of stuff like this. Troper's also have a name for this. It's called Fanon. Facts that are taken as canon by fans that may or may not have any real basis in the source material.

I would also suspect that rights issues probably was the reason why Battle Fever J was at the first Super Sentai series for a while as well. That said I'm just glad that GoRanger and JAKQ is now part of the franchise and was originally planned to be the first two Super Sentai series.

I cant confirm what I'm about to post but... toy sales of older sentai series was selling better in the secondary market and is also a reason why it was retconned to be part of super sentai.... Some shows was redubbed or subbed in other territory so it had new audiences and the toy sales sold better in other reqion

I got into a whole argument with someone on twitter over this. They claimed because Gorenger ran for 2 years, Zenkaiger couldn't be the 45th anniversary. Apparently the 2 year run proved Gorenger didn't count as super sentai

I think they were referring to the fact that, despite celebrating the 45th anniversary of Gorenger, Zenkaiger actually started 46 years after Gorenger aired. That actually isn't just due to Gorenger running for 2 years, though, it's due to Super Sentai taking a break in 1978 (between JAKQ and Battle Fever). Under normal circumstances, Gorenger running for 2 years would have actually solved this problem - if Gorenger ran for 2 years and then there was no break in 1978, then the 45th series would start on the 45th anniversary year. You can see this exemplified with Heisei Kamen Rider - Decade was the 10th Heisei Rider and most people call it an anniversary series, but it in fact aired only 9 years after Kuuga.
