It's so insane how they are trying to get these virtual offices off the ground. No one wants to go to an office in real life, why would anyone want to wear a VR headset all day just to be in a virtual office? You don't get any of the benefits of working from home but you do get additional eye-strain. Sounds horrible

I'm an adult who quite enjoys meeting people in real life. You are very condescending
@yxcjeje
@yxcjeje Жыл бұрын
@@ILubBLOfficial I work in IT, so my experience does not apply to all forms of labor without compulsory need for physical attendance. Both remote work and office work have their validity, but it depends on the situation. Remote work is best suitable for concentration-intensive and heavily self-managed work. You are in silence and if you have a question, you call (or write) a colleague via mostly Teams. It works decently well if it is an integrated solution. Office work is preferred if you need a lot of communication, e.g. at the beginning of a project or to demonstrate something that works bad in an online conference. It also has an immense social component; yes, colleagues are not by default your friends, but they are still humans and actually having some sort of social attendance related to your work benefits your mental health (unless anxieties are at play). The metaverse idea of attending a virtual office pretty much combines most of the worst of both realms: Social isolation and strain on your eyes from home office, physical obligation and distraction from attendance. Who seriously wants this?

The headset not being able to track your legs is not an excuse. Literally a couple of NEETs made a mod for Skyrim called VRIK, and it simulates your full body including legs and feet. It's not 100% accurate of course, but it does a damn good job at approximating your movement, all in a FREE MOD in a crappy VR port of a 2011 game using an engine from the early 2000s.
@discordlexia2429

That's because NEETs make things for the sake of making things, whereas corpos make things for the sake of making money. Also, VR chat manages the legs issue just fine. Even with just the headset, the walking animations and approximation for the leg bending looks totally fine. Agreed. VR Chat and VRIK mod look really decent w/o full body tracking. Shows that big corporations are so mired in politics that small startups, and even game modders, are more innovative. Yup. Also it's incorrect to say that they never cared about cutting-edge graphics. They used to care. Gamecube was their last beefy device tho. In some ways better than PS2, in some other ways worse. Ever since the massive success of Wii Nintendo has switched its priorities and they try to recreate this success. It's baffling that even 6th gen Tony Hawk games, which came out 15-20 years ago, look a lot better than the Metaverse. The game that Kenny used in his example is 16 years old. I know VR can be hungry for resources, but it's still not an excuse for the models to look like cheap cartoon models made by an indie game developer when the budget is a lot higher than most games. There's this thing called optimization, and I don't think Meta is using it.

I'm sure it's only fair to give it a fair comparison like beat saber, an actual vr games, yes vr is power hungry but the minimum requirements to run vr is actually a lot lower, how so? there's a lot of optimization need to be done, like player shouldn't see a stuttering or lagging graphic, and it's to prevent motion sickness and other illness, but even then the graphic shouldn't be this bad considering the amount of budget spend, they could've done some optimization like reducing polygon in environment, only loads the environment that the player sees, like at least they could've done something

The idea is understandable, they clearly need more testers from their main target group? As someone who studies and works in the field of VR/AR and such, I meet really often people who wanted to include these technologies just for the sake of it. I can imagine that someone with a lot of money had the idea "hey it would be cool to make a mii verse for meetings BUT in VR". While I want to believe that they did market research I get the feeling that just the social aspect of being there as a VR avatar is the only thing that really differentiates this from Zoom/Teams. I mean compare the user journey: Zoom: Put on headset, turn on cam (if not automatically) and start zoom/teams, enter meeting ID or similar data, go Metaverse: turn on vr headset (check for battery/put in loading cable), put it on, Connect to metaverse, find room/follow invite, try not to get motion sick, go. That was just seen in the context of meetings. Of course you can do other stuff which will be really average I guess, but at this point, it conveys the feeling to be the son of Zoom and VR chat. And even VR chat has legs though.

2:05 Miis have been around far longer than 10 years. While the "Mii-Verse" as a term may have launched with the Wii U 10 years ago, Miis were a thing as far back as the original Wii in 2006. Meanwhile, the Wii used hardware very similar to what the Gamecube used in 2001, save for the full DVD drive and the motion controls. The Wii had the Mii program for creating Miis and also launched with Wii sports, a motion game that used the Miis directly. More nintendo licensed games would soon come out for the Wii that used the Miis as the playable protagonists over time, first adhering largely to the sports and "fitness" genres of gameplay and branching out over time. Also, I too would agree that the Miis are better than the Facebook characters, but because the Mii characters look noticeably better if you pay attention to details. The Miis at least had decent lighting on their bodies and a shiny sheen applied to them to prevent them from falling into the uncanny valley. Mii body parts weren't painted with a bright, flat fullbright color, as they appear to have color gradients and basic lighting, which breaks up the color and makes them easy on the eyes. Meanwhile, that facebook character in the GIF had completely constant "full-bright" lighting with completely flat and bright colors and no sheen of any kind. It hurts your eyes to look at the Facebook character. It's almost as if the Miis were designed by artists who knew how to design something that's appealing to look at, expressive, versatile, and simple to render even on old hardware, whereas the Facebook characters were designed by people whose job it is to maintain an aging social media site.

Minor correction: Miis as a whole predate the Miiverse, which is basically twitter on Wii U, which did release when you said they did, 2015. Miis were unveilied as the main Avatar on the Wii in 2006, and still see use on the Switch today, even if they're more hidden than they once were.

Good insights into the metaverse. It reminds me of Second Life (SL). I used that early on, just a little bit, for remote meetings. It was not really something that useful. Zoom and MS Teams is more than fine for that purpose, with no extra hardware required. One of the things Meta touts is augmented reality. That can be useful for industrial companies but is not something a consumer would need. The spending by tech companies that rely in advertising, on everything, is just out of control. An idea like Metaverse already existed in Second Life. People had virtual avatars and bought (with real money) virtual land in an online platform that was nothing more than a glorified chat room. The difference is that it was fun, you could make stuff in the built in 3d engine (anything you could imagine) and people used it to escape reality for a few hours. Meta is none of that.

The problem I have with the Metaverse is that it has no purpose. Like, KZbin is for videos, Reddit is the Internet divided into small parts by different topics, Twitter is a place where companies announce news and people argue, games are supposed to be played, and so on. A successful product needs a clearly defined purpose, while Meta's goal is to build a third life which is very abstract and obscure and is not really needed.
@wamingo
@wamingo Жыл бұрын
I agree it's not clearly defined, but many people prefer their virtual lives to their real lives. Games too, like any entertainment, is an escape. But I think this characterization is incorrect anyway. FB has showed a bunch of scifi-futurism which can just be ignored.. FB's metaverse actually looks more like it wants to be a platform for making games and experiences. A Roblox competitor of sorts. And in the long run I think it'll also become an app store - which could be key. It'll act as the goto meeting place where you discover new products and launch your experiences, especially with friends. FB will bribe some game devs and other artists to launch their stuff there. Now it's competing with Apple's App store, Steam and maybe even Netflix and Spotify. Add in legacy FB integration and you got a serious package. And forget the notion that it'll be a VR only thing. It'll run on your phone, pc, everywhere. No mass adoption without platform agnosticism. The real money is in the metaverse, not hardware. Anyway, maybe the skeptics will be right.. But I've rarely seen so many people use so little imagination while criticising only what they see.

I own a Quest 2 and barely find any use out of it because there's simply no "killer app" that makes me want or need to use the headset daily. Finally, she left for a bit so I snuck the Quest Pro out of the box to try it again before I had to leave, and noticed the thing was HOT. VR dev here! I work in academia, so I really hate metaverse because its made it really difficult to have VR in a lab environment. However, id like to provide some context to the issues you bring up, since some of these are def metaverse being silly as hell, but some are actually - believe it or not - just kind of VR best practices. - First: VR has to render the scene stereoscopically. This means it renders the same scene twice from different perspectives (once to the left eye and once to the right eye) to get a realistic illusion of depth (you could render once then copy one eye to the other, but its not as believable and can be nauseating). Vr also must track a lot of positional data. This means VR apps need to be super optimized, so they can only handle graphics about as good as a mobile phone. Now, metaverse is ugly ugly and they worked very poorly within those constraints, but its super misleading and... really completely unapplicable to compare VR capabilities to something like ffxii (good taste though) or graphics in AAA games. Miiverse is a great example though, as those models were built to communicate character and expression without HD graphics. VR chat would also be a good example, or even vtubers! because you can see what people have done with 10k polygon limitations in VR :) (seriously, imagine if your polygon limit was the equivalent of a kratos nipple) - Dynamic shadows are extremely expensive to process as well, and from the perspective of someone in VR, you rarely rarely look down at your legs or notice not having shadows. When I introduce someone to VR, not having legs is often one of the first observations, but its... never reallly brought up again! Also: legs can actually be nauseating if theyre in app, because - like you mentioned - tracking can rarely work well for legs. Not just technologically, but practically! Different heights can mean sensors within the HMD- which have become more commonplace- cant really see the feet of taller people. If the legs are out of sync with your actual feet, it can cause simulation sickness (essentially reverse motion sickness). Also- you guessed it, cutting out an ultimately unnecessary part of the model saves on our 'budget' for graphics. Basically, no legs is standard in VR, even preferrable, but it looks weirder when youre watching footage and not in VR. Granted, this really only works for solo vr games - in multiplayer its just as weird. - quest pro virtual office is a total fucking meme to vr devs. Its absolutely ridiculous. No one wants to wear a headset that long, hands down, theyre way too uncomfortable and heavy. One thing my team always asks before taking on a project is: does this need to be VR? And in this case: hell no! (Edited bc my - marks made it strikethrough lol)

To me, the Metaverse represents the apotheosis of every bit of trite, meaningless corporate drivel and every soulless tech startup ambitious for monopoly over the past 20 years. It's a parody of itself. The product doesn't matter. The plan is to sell you nothing, and you will buy it because you'll be forced to (by your boss or investors or whatever). It's digital landlordism - providing you, the customer, with nothing while they collect their fee for every little interaction because they own the entire platform. Fortunately, they seem to have forgotten that the real world exists, and these moronic ideas explode on contact with reality as soon as they leave their incubators in the ivory towers of silicon valley's billionaire boardrooms. Absolutely NOBODY is talking about the headset and it's coming out in a few days. None of the tech news I follow, none of the tech youtubers, none of the gaming news, absolutely nobody is talking about it. I’m studying marketing and I know a lot of people who worked on some of the silicon valley accounts. I think part of the issue is that the people drafting the ideas are not the technical experts and they don’t get what made the original Internet great, which was giving people the freedom to do whatever they want. They want to create a curated Internet experience, but the enticement of the Internet focuses on the individual Contant creator and niche interests and communities around that.

At the same time, the modern internet demands that things be safe and presentable for your average citizen. It's no longer filled with nerds who presumably know what they are doing. The idea of the metaverse is being marketed to these average citizens, which include children, teenagers, seniors, and others who are less tech savvy or don't want to see objectionable content. The thing is corporations aren't going to be able to build all the infrastructure required for the next web revolution, just like they weren't able to for the last. I don't get why they aren't just building open tools like they were for much of the 2010s, and letting smaller companies and hobbyists take most of the risk.

Second Life is pretty much the original online virtual world, and it's still around today. Part of what helps it persist is that it's such a flexible platform. You can make and do pretty much anything in it. You aren't limited to untextured human avatars. Meta is completely missing the mark. Normal people don't want to do normal everyday things in a virtual world, they want to do things they normally can't do. Also, SL tried to do the "Make it look professional so businesses will do meetings in our virtual world" thing 10 years ago. It was a total wasted effort. And as an IT guy, I really hope that VR meetings never becomes a thing. It's just more obscure and proprietary hardware that I'd have to support.

Meta is missing the mark, but I think you're missing the mark too. Yes, normal people don't want to do everyday things in VR. They also don't want to do special things in VR either. Normal people want to do things in real life. A VR concert in the metaverse will never appeal to them versus going to do something in person. A VR poker game is convenient, but not as much fun as being around a table with your friends. Meta's mistake is trying to persuade everyone that this is technology that everyone would want, when only turbo nerds and children would ever be really interesting in using it everyday.

That's an extremely good point. This thing feels like it came out of the mind of someone who has never worked a day in his life. Someone who works for a living would viscerally know that all their cool ideas would need to be maintained by an army of workers, that you couldn't just fire and forget a piece of tech. To Zuck, digital technology still feels magical because he's never experienced the drudgery behind the polished surface. Then I remember that by 2009 it was already something I learned was toxic and to keep away from it, despite it being the biggest thing. Then by like 2015 it was something only grandmas used. And I remember that even MYSPACE seemed invincible back in like 2005-2006 and that went out I guess by 2008 or so! I get why Zuc thought that keeping it under Facebook may be the way to do it, but I think it was a failure in terms of brand etc. and the market has decided for him. Facebook was a brand built over decades, and was just overnight replaced with an unproven scheme called Meta, that unsettled investors. Facebook already stripped us from many aspects of human touch, with the metaverse he pretended to isolate us in a virtual world, the problems that I see are that covid made us realize how important for our lives direct social contact is, and how short life is to waste in imaginary things that are a very crude imitation of real life.

Meta didn't have a choice but to rush out an incomplete product. With apple and android being able to cut off their life support they had to create a new way for people to access their platform so that they could maintain complete control. Hence oculus rift and the meta verse.

The Mii characters actually look nice. They have a very specific stylized look, which gives them a unique charm. To me it looks like the metaverse avatars are kinda half way between trying to look stylized and trying to look realistic, which gives them a strange look. I don't personally mind that the environment is simple (there are games that look just as simple and look good), but the avatars just look so strange. Its like they are lacking cohesion. It feels like they are trying to take what's popular and trying to figure out how to make the most money out of it, instead of thinking why people use virtual world and what makes it fun for them. If you want to make something, the user experience should come first, not the monetization.
