It runs so good it’s fortunate it was a head gasket. A simple fix on a flatty. Have to love a practical classic.

Haha but it would have triple the horsepower for a fraction of the cost! I love flatheads. 3/4 of our fleet is flathead powered. But I can’t justify the cost of rebuilding one these days.

@@LGKustoms I hear you and agree that would be the way to go if it hadn’t been just a blown head gasket. I rebuilt a ‘39 Merc flattie about 5 years ago and, you’re right, it cost me about $10k CDN. No regrets though. It’ll soon be going into my ‘39 Model A roadster ! Cheers!

Hey, just started looking at this video of head removal. Overheating problems also can be caused by points closing down from wear. Try checking that. Your's Roger
@LGKustoms4 ай бұрын
Pretty sure the over heating was caused by the faulty head gasket

As much as I love LS’s flatheads are way cooler , nice job you two. Hard to believe that the parts store has head gaskets . Lux cracks me up 😂 👍🏻

I agree they are way cooler. But I can’t justify spending $8000-$10000 to rebuild one and still only have 100hp.
@MrLangleylad4 ай бұрын
@@LGKustoms totally understand that. I’ve put an LS in a 68 Cougar and got plenty of flack for that, I can just imagine the negative comments that you would get. I’m glad it worked out for you and Shannon.

the old school machines that put abrasive through and then filter it out are hard to find... old engines that sat sometimes build rust blockages (im sure you know all about it)

Lee- What are your thoughts on studs vs. bolts for an 8BA? I have some seeping on a couple head bolts in my ‘40 Tudor. I like the idea of not turning threads inside the block more than necessary. Also thread sealant and head gasket sealant…..
@LGKustoms4 ай бұрын
I’ve never had issues with head bolts. I do use thread sealant on them when assembling. I’m definitely not an engine builder though, so take what I do with a grain of salt.

Awesome little family! I do have a question about the oil mixed with coolant. Obviously, you changed the oil and oil filter. Is there anything else that might be affected from a head gasket leaking coolant into the cylinder? Thank you for great content!
@LGKustoms4 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. I don’t think so, obviously we changed oil and coolant, I can’t think of anything else that could get contaminated. That being said, I’m not a mechanic, fabrication is my main specialty.
@terrykeithley61834 ай бұрын
Lee I have 3 302 engines I'll give you any choice just don't put a X in. Terry P. S. does Lux have his driver's license lol.😊
@LGKustoms4 ай бұрын
After doing the 302 swap in Shannon’s comet, I have no interest in small block fords haha. Too many variations from year to year and model to model. I think the only way I’d ever do one again is if I bought a complete running car and pulled the engine/trans combo out.

questions ? . . . . . there was no water in the oil ? , and was there water dripping out of the exhaust ? - you might want to drill a hole in the muffler to drain any water and weld it back up or a super long road trip - take care

There was evidence of water in the oil. Nothing noticeable in the exhaust though.

@@LGKustoms Your head gasket is a result of figuring it out lol. These were low pressure systems. Keep the level about a 1/4 above the grid. 4 psi cap, 160* thermostats with 3-4 1/8" holes like SBC describes in their vid, maintain the crossover on the intake for colder months and if heat riser valve is still present, delete it. If you LS or SBC swap it I will hate you and never watch your videos again LOL J/K I understands what momma needs and support you 100% 🥰
