I love the Meters and dig Dr. John as well so seeing him was a plus. I forever called him Mac rebonak(sp?) because he was introduced by his full name during the Last Waltz. Later on I got hip to Nola funk by looking for him and discovered these guys in the process. I still keep both on constant rotation in my playlist.

It sounds like you're one of us "Funkateers" who totally understand where the FUNK came from. THE METERS surpasses JAMES BROWN and THE JB'S in a different way. JAMES BROWN laid the bricks but THE METERS originated the all-familiar pattern of FUNK!!! The "JOSIE" years from the number one FUNK group ever are regarded in my book as the pinnacle of funk!
@jokervienna64338 ай бұрын
I´d say that Mr Brown defined the genre - he is the kitchenfloor. The Meters added more ingredients, threw some other ingredients out and where really good - but we have to mention Mr Brown. What he did to soul & funk is again simply the kitchenfloor.

Zigaboo is the best drummer EVER as far as I am concerned. Is it "correct" playing? Nope! But it sure is perfect to me!
5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. at least in terms of how far and wide he influenced drummers. I've heard punk drummers say he's their fav.. I've heard Ringo say he can't come close, I have heard Purdie.. say nothing about him LOL.. (purdie loves his own image haha) .. Steve Gadd loves him. And since like 1955 or something rediculous like that Zig helped create the dance beat of the last 60 years. Next to James Browns drummers.. most sampled. Correct is subjective. Every drum teacher has a different outlook and influence. One wants to be Buddy Rich the other wants to be Geddy Lee. It should be about the personality.

Wow! I've loved this band for most of my adult life - I'm 61. Never thought to look for video until now. This is the shit... The real NO funk from the best band ever to do it. Music gets no better than this.

Especially the tracks he played on with "the man" around 70´ are next to rhythm perfection and almost not human, he was the relentless "machinery" (too much for JAMES to cope with) at the time for JAMES BROWN and his universe of super bad FUNK! But, there's always a but right? GEORGE PORTER JR. and "ZIGABOO": the rhythm undisputed gods, played in a whole different league! They are soo synched, tight and they interlock each other on the verge to become one essence! I have never to this day heard anything like THE METERS, my time spending listening to rhythm-based music must be counted in decades rather than hours and years, so I have a pretty solid foundation to back up what I love! Sorry, almost slipped my mind. Never forget the accent to the rhythm (the other way around than all other genres) LEO and ART provided, without them, THE METERS wouldn't have to be! My two cents anyway :)
