I know some people felt they were 'too close' to Polynesian culture, but as someone with Māori ancestry who is trying to reconnect with his culture (and people) *I* appreciated the positive community messaging with this particular tribe. Noble? Sure. Savages? No. They weren't perfect. They had their own hang-ups and mistrust (and downright bullying) of another tribe coming into their space. That's authentic. But what's also authentic is the acceptance of that other tribe. Taking them in. Giving them food. Training. And ultimately , respect. There's more nuance going on here that some people are missing. They are traditional (you could say to a fault at times), but they are about community. Family (whānau as we Māori say). And the Sully's became like family. That's totally authentic to the people that inspire this tribe and I thought Jim did a great job in giving them more dimension than simple "noble savages."

Did people have a problem with them being closely inspired by the Polynesian culture? I think Cameron deliberately wrote them to be that way since they r an oceanic people and the closest inspiration of such indigenous tribes in modern day would be Polynesian. Cameron has also said in his documentaries of the making of avatar that they took inspiration for the Na'avi from many different indigenous tribes, not just native American culture. They pulled from some African tribes too. And I agree that Cameron did far more than present them as "noble savages". Their ways and understanding of their spiritual deity shows that they have a far deeper consideration for life, existence and the balance/conservation of energy than that of the most learned scientist the humans have. I just adore this world Cameron built.

@@notoyaarthur1990 My understanding was that real Natives took issue with the fact that Cameron heavily borrowed from their cultures and made billions of dollars doing so, while almost exclusively casting and hiring white people to work on the film. As you say they "pulled from" the cultures of existing peoples - many modern Natives consider that to just be a new form of colonization.

The reason the Reef Navi didn't help in the first was because of many reasons: 1. They don't use flying creatures. 2. All their versatile weapons and fighting is made for water combat. Not air and forest combat like the first war. 3. In the amount of time before the humans invaded any further sully had to recruit those closest with him in the shortest amount of time not traveling for a whole week to get fish people to run in the forest for them

Of course they wouldn't be able to. Which is why forest people don't go to the water clans and vise versa. Both clans are adapted to their own enviroment and will stuggle to surivive if they swapped enviroments. They will have to learn the ways of the people who live there. Forest people won't be able to properly adapt to the ocean and oceanic people won't be able to adapt properly to the forests.

What people forget about the fight in the first movie is that the Na'vi were still gathering as the humans attacked. Quaritch did say that when they wait another week or something like that the Na'vi forces will outnumber them. So they attacked to not be outnumbered, so it could be that the Metkayina were called and were on their way. But since they don't have Direhorses or Banshees, they would have to walk there.

Mmm the accelerated evolution is likely due to how dangerous Pandora is. The weak die, quickly. And due to the unique environments the species have to adapt a lot faster than humans do. Additionally, they don’t use metal or stone, or wheels. That’s why they have to adapt to their environment so specifically, humans would’ve likely done the same had we not ended up using technology and metals.

Having watched the film a second time... I can say with certainty that the Metkayina abandoned the final battle (after their kid was rescued) because they were there solely for that, and to avenge the Tulkun. That means once that fight was over, they had no business being there. That fight was between Jake and Quarich... and considering how reluctant they were to take the Sully's in, as you highlight in your video, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Everyone talks about the Metcayina leaving the final battle but the battle was won quickly, the boats, mechs and mini-subs were destroyed and the Sea Dragon stranded, there was no reason to the warriors stay, but i think Tonowari should appear in the final moments in the ship, but did not return to rescue his daughter. I understand that Cameron doesn't want anyone outside intruding on the "family moment" and figh with Quaritch but causing this narrative problem, perhaps in the extended version of 9 hours these ideas or moments were shown but now they were lost.

Future Timeline Theory In Avatar 3: Seed Bearer (9 hours film -> Cameron confirmed this), Jake rallies the Na'vi Clans (Forest Clans, Sky Clans, Ocean Clans) to attack Bridgehead. The battle was huge and massive taking down many RDA Recoms, SecOps, and colonists in the process. The RDA manages to win against the Na'vi but took a lot of damage and casualties in the process. It wasn't until the RDA received support for a Na'vi Clan called the Ash Tribe. The Ash Tribe are Na'vi who live in volcanic and desolate wastelands on Pandora. The regions they lived in were a result of an ancient war between the Na'vi between those who are Indigenous and those who desire to create massive civilizations. The Indigenous Na'vi won but they spared their enemies who eventually grew to become the Ash Tribe. The Ash Tribe will help the RDA colonize Pandora in exchange for learning human technology, science, and other things. General Ardmore is concerned but she agrees to form an alliance and orders Recom, led by Quaritch, to keep an eye on the Ash Tribe. The Ash Tribe's help led the RDA to score victories against the Na'vi forcing Jake to strategize in defeating the Ash Tribe. Over time, the Ash Tribe learn human technology and science as well as how to reproduce them using the resources on their lands. However, Quaritch learned of the Ash Tribe's plan to betray the RDA which forces Recom to work with Jake to defeat the Ash Tribe. It is later learned that the Ash Tribe have no desire to conquer Pandora but rather improve their clan's lives through the use of human technology and science. Despite this, the Ash Tribe does not trust the Sky People (Humans) after hearing about their various genocidal acts. The conflict is later resolved. Avatar 3 will also probably focus on Quaritch and his redemption into becoming a better father and SecOps leader. The RDA does not always operate in Pandora as they try to also find other suitable worlds to colonize because of Na'vi hostility due to the RDA's war crimes on Pandora. They find different worlds but find none of them habitable until they discovered a world once inhabited by the Na'vi who looked more advance than the Indigenous Na'vi we see on Pandora. The RDA SciOps questioned the Na'vi's true history, how they moved to Pandora, and how they evolved to be able to bond with Eywa and Pandora's wildlife. Avatar 3 is likely the climax of the Avatar Series before we move on to Avatar 4: Tulkun Rider and Avatar 5: Quest for Eywa. The main character for Avatar 4 is likely Lo'ak who helps the Metkayina and its future clan leader, Ao'nung (Tonowari's son). The Metkayina with Kiri's help will be guided by Eywa to enter a Hidden Sea (similar to Aquaman's Hidden Sea) only accessible under the ocean. The Hidden Sea is where Kiri can properly communicate with Eywa with Grace, Neteyem, Tsu'tey, and Sylwanin (Neytiri's sister) guiding her. Eywa will teach Kiri more about Pandora and how the world's Flora and plants can save Earth. Thus, a quest is formed to save Earth thus resolving the Na'vi-Human conflict once and for all in a peaceful way. The story continues in Avatar 5: The Quest for Eywa. Neytiri leads the quest with the help of some of her family members, Norm, SciOps, and Quaritch. They will travel to Earth to heal the planet from its environmental degradation and damage. There will be conflict as RDA profited from Earth's degradation. However, Earth is now a wasteland with most of humanity's civilizations, cities, and homes wiped out. It is now an apocalyptic world now ready to be rescued by the people (Na'vi) they oppressed on Pandora. REGARDING METKAYINA We will likely get to see more of the Metkayina and how they play a role in Avatar 3 and Avatar 4. It will be interesting as the Na'vi Ash People represent fire while the Metkayina represent water (Way of Water). Let us see how the Ash People's Way of Fire contradicts the Way of Water.

the four elements as earth, water, fire and air always work nice for setting up mayor themes, fith is of course quintesence, where all comes together and is fitting for Quest for Eywa. but I must add that a tecnical advanced culture is rearily if never been reformed by a technical less advanced culture. the effects of he Beatles hugging Indian philosofy had next to zero effect on western culture. All kind of flower powery and transsedentalism stayed pretty fringe. Where the side effect was an increase in drugsuse and addiction, not pariculary a benifitial effect on society. In stead of healing the degraded Earth as suggested in your Quest for Eywa, it more likely could have the effect of an increasing of narco statehood. But speculation and theorising over Avatar movies to come is always fun.

When Avatar 1 came out I was 12 so I didn’t really pay too much attention to Mo’at, but later in the years I noticed details like her hair. It’s so peculiar, she has bigger braids on the back of her head, but the coolest thing is her queue (I mean the long braid with the neural connection, I think it’s called queue), cause it’s basically split in half, goes around her neck and then reconnects into one in the front. I’m pretty sure it is for easier and more immediate access to connections with everything, but again, how cool!

My idea as to why they didn’t call upon the metkyena didn’t come to battle against the RDA is due to the fact that they are water fighters and all their creatures are water based which would mean their skills and war tactics would be pretty useless in the jungle and that’s why they weren’t in the first

When I saw Cameron's first _Avatar_ movie in theatre, certain themes and core plot elements (like a planetary consciousness archored in giant trees on a jungle-covered planet; an Earth corporation trying to exploit the resources; the memories of the natives living on in the trees after their deaths) of the Pandora setting strongly reminded me of Alan Dean Foster's scifi novel _Midworld_ (first published in 1975, part of Foster's _Humanx Commonwealth_ universe setting), even though the story and characters are different and there is no equivalent to the Avatar bodies in _Midworld_ novel. And now some plot points from _Midworld_ which were missing from the first movie pop up in _Avatar: The Way of Water,_ like an immortality serum created by harvesting a part of the planet's biosphere that is an integral part of the planet's consciousness. Not sure if James Cameron ever read Foster's novel. Foster was pretty well known Scifi author in the 1970s/80s.

the tulkun being pacificts remind me of the blue whale, which is by the way the biggest animal to have EVER live on earth. (yes, prehistoric premordial time included) so, anything trying to fight blue whale even like 100 orcas at once dont have a chance, whales have so much more MUSCLE than anyone guesses so it can just bitch slap around anything around it and it would just die. Also, a fun fact that whales ONLY eat as much as they need to sustain themselves.

I love how this guys research is so deep that he talks about pandora and all that live among it like it's an actual place.. the attention to detail on knowing their diets. How long the creatures can live, how big they can get. Even knowing the distance in miles between the forest people and the water clans. How fast the mountain banchies can fly and how long it would take to get there.... props to you my good friend... but I'd love to know where you got all this information from cause the movies didn't tell us none of that lol.... you talk as if you went to pandora and studied everything there is to know about all the clans and different creatures that pandora has to offer... can't wait for avatar 3 and 4 to come out... I love this video. But I have to point out that the Metkayina do not have the same exact mindset as the Tulkun. Tonowari says in the movie that the murderers of Roa (a Tulkun and Ronal's spirit sister) "must die, here, today". Implying that the Metkayina have the intention of acting out revenge on the sky people. I don't think that's morally bad. Just an inconsistency.

and it didn’t look like Jake and Neytiri flew to them, and even if they did off-screen you’re exactly right. By Ronal’s reaction to the Sullies arrival she definitely wouldn’t allow her clan and family being in danger over a fight that doesn’t even involve them

That's a good point why put yourself and your tribe in danger if you don't have to,and plus this clan didn't have the right resources to travel though the forest and would probably have no idea how to survive in the forest.

One thing I don’t understand is when Kiri went to save Tuk and Neytiri, why did she only take one gilmantle when she past a few (at least three)? Why didn’t she take multiple since she was going down to save her family in the sunken ship?
@sukifortier1614

@@sillyjellyfish2421 Yeah I think all those other things are mentioned separately from "art." They're plausible. I'm trying to recall whether the narration in the film itself mentions "art," vs. song, etc.. I think it does. Anyhoo, they're separately mentioned here. Fact is, the movie presents a boatload of interesting ideas without supporting them in the story. No one can deny that it's lovely to look at. The effects are spectacular, truly. But gosh I wish they'd done a better job with the writing. As slim as A1 was story wise, it was a little better in that department.

@Bryce Edward Brown I love how Cameron went for the Māori/Islander look for the Metkayina clan and their connection with the Tulkun and the tattoos and the haku inspired war cry it suits this tribe because they live on islands and has a spiritual connection with the ocean they have the ability to slow down the beat of their heart so they don’t burn oxygen and they have tail fins to swim I love that Cameron added modern culture to the Metkayina clan. And for the Ash clan you mentioned in one of your videos I reckon they are based from Aztecs or Inca and built their city on the side of one of Pandora’s active volcanoes where they collect lava and mould and shape it into weapons and armour the Ash clan’s skin is heat resistant and they have glands that are attached to the aorta of the heart that cools down the blood and stops the Ash clan from overheating when they go and collect lava.
@kamion53

they created a very intrigring tribe of Na'vi with the Metkayina tribe, but I wished they went for a different design of the forearms, instead of this kinf of seal fluke, maybe a rigde of spines with connecting tissue would look nicer. although this flukelike limb is better based in possible evolution. that is in my opinion not the case with the tail; it is crocodile like moving sideways where one might expect and extention of the spinal cord to move up and down like in dolphins. but maybe here the choice was esthetic as a flat beaver like tail would look plump on the reed slender creatures. Neverthe less eager to see new creatures in the third movie and new variation on the Na'vi anatomy.

After watching a good bit of Avatar lore, I've realized something. I want a game from the human perspective. And not from the perspective of someone who will immediately betray their own species, either. No, I want a game set on Pandora where you can make your own choices. You could always pull a standard human "good guy" move and betray your own species after being with the Na'vi for a while. Or... You could venture far and wide across the Pandoran landscape, both as a human, and in a Na'vi body. See the beauty of the alien landscape, undergo the ritual of Iknimaya, soar above the floating mountains and bathe in the refreshing air, before coming back, and bonding with the Ikran further. Later on, getting a chance to connect with the plants and hear the voice of the planet itself. And as you stand before Eywa, looking at the culmination of the planet's life and biomass, you say only one word to the entity. "No." That's what I want. A game with choices. A game where you can end up doing more environmental damage than the rest of the RDA ever could, or wipe their outposts from existence, and exterminate the invading humans as though they're a plague. Sure, I'm describing two polar opposites, but I would also love some morally grey characters and scenarios too. Humans that are sympathetic, Na'vi that are questionably moral. Subversions of what's in the movies. Maybe even call into question whether or not Eywa can even be trusted. Is it actually the planet? Or is it just a highly advanced neural parasite? Things like that would be amazing. Of course with some sprinklings of horror here and there, since Pandora isn't exactly the most friendly place to live.

One could use the same argument but in reverse for the new casting of Ariel(..which I love btw! And can't wait to see. ) I just think casting for fictious roles like this...
