It’s amazing how you guys are supposed to know baseball but you only discuss the money issues and not the lack of productivity Alonso displayed the entire regular season! Yes, he did hit 34HRs (one more than the team’s shortstop), not 40!! Lindor’s HRs were struck when it most counted to take the lead or tie a game! Most of Alonso’s HRs were incredible moonshots, struck when the team was already leading by 5-6 runs! He had 88RBI and was third on the team! He also led in one other category… strikeouts! In the National league, he’s ranked behind 4 other 1st basemen… Freeman, Harper, Walker and Olson! That doesn’t include guys in the American league! Alonso’s offensive productivity did not contribute greatly to the team’s success in making the playoffs. He’s been on a downspin the last 2 years… These are the numbers they’re throwing at Boras when they discuss justifying his contract demands… You cannot win games if you have players with low batting averages or not being productive with RISP… I like Pete and I wish they could work something out and return, but I’m with management here when considering Pete’s productivity on a contract and most certainly when you’re being asked to bid against yourself!

Steve Cohen is making 2 mistakes this off season: 1. He paid WAY TOO MUCH to Soto. 2. He is being way too stingy on Mets Franchise player, Pete. There’s front-end and back-end contracts. It’s mostly likely owners who end up having short-end of the stick with back-end contract. Steve made mistakes on Verlander and on Scherzer with back-end contract, and he is about to make a big one on Soto. On the other hand Pete produced a lot for Mets with a front-end contract until now. If there’s anyone who deserves an overpaid back-end contract from Steve is Pete. This messy contract negotiation will turn off Mets fans and mess up chemistry in clubhouse !
@jpcoqueran4 сағат бұрын
if the Mets win a world series with Soto i don't think Cohen cares much tbh
@KCJB222914 сағат бұрын
Yea you are wrong on every front here. 1. Soto contract wasn't an overpay. An overpay is paying 100 million more than the next team bidding. The Mets paid what they needed to. Not a penny more. 2. Alonso chose to decline a fair extension and bet on himself. Now it's boohoo we are mistreating him?? Nah. He wanted to play the market. Well this is the market. No first baseman is getting a long term contract, and the short terms are around 20mm. Mets went slightly higher. He doesn't like it? Sucks to suck.
@yaniyuhara81654 сағат бұрын
@ That’s a big IF. I also think that “franchise culture” matters. Dodgers have a reputation that Dodgers front office take care of players families. This type of recent Mets transaction colors Mets Franchise as overly generous on outsiders and unnecessarily tough on insiders in my opinion.
@KCJB222914 сағат бұрын
@yaniyuhara8165 the Mets took care of Nimmo and McNeil so that narrative is BS. They have taken care of their homegrown guys. And they would've done the same with Pete. But PETE made it clear he wanted to test the market. It's not the Mets fault the Market bucks and Pete suddenly is in a jam. He made his choice.
@yaniyuhara81654 сағат бұрын
@ 1. Definition of overpay should not be necessarily “slight outbidding” to a second bidder, but be adherence to the player’s intrinsic value in the market. Just because Mets ended up paying a tad more than Yankees, it does not necessarily mean that Mets paid the fair market value to Soto. Rather, Yankees inflated Soto’s market value. 2. I think you are right 50% on this because it takes 2 to tango. However, as far as the image of Mets Franchise, it was Mets who are on the losing end.
