The answer for a fun, reliable, and cheap sports car, has always been the Mazda Miata. But Mazda just announced that they're seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in an effort to have all models feature some form of electrification by 2030. Electric Vehicles often have some very "Un-Miata" like characteristics, so will our favorite sports car be gone forever? Today we're gonna figure it out!

the total amount of charge they're allowed to use is reduced during safety/pace car periods, someone got the maths wrong, and that caused the cut off point to arrive before the end of the race. Couldnt they just design the cars in a way where the batteries can be swapped out quickly? It could kind of be an equivalent of a refuel. Of course, they would also need like a crane or something to lift the batteries but, it still seems like a decent solution.
@chrisdavidson911

@@goblingamer606 When F E first started the batteries weren't up to the job, so they used 2 cars per race, with the driver swapping cars during a fixed length pitstop. Battery swapping sounds fine in theory, but when it's being done in a hurry it's only a matter of time before something goes wrong, or gets wet, or electrocuted It all seems to be progressing ok really, just that 1 screwup with the pace/safety car grabbed some attention, but remembering that the cars weren't actually out of power it's a minor issue. It does suck that some drivers were penalised for using more power than they were allowed, despite the fact that the car was basically crawling on minimum power (like when an engine goes limp mode)

@AlkyCeej
@AlkyCeej 2 жыл бұрын
@@nos4me no, they didn't run out, when safety car periods happen the race direction artificially reduce the amount of electrical power they can use for the race. The batteries were not physically depleted. It's like saying a petrol car can only use 60 litres out of a total of 80 litres on board for a race. They'd still have 20 litres left when they've used 60.

@sudoeste08
@sudoeste08 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nefarious_Bread no its not. Imagine it was regular formula 1 but everytime the safety entered the track they were banned for using 1 liter. This is an artificial limit as the race series is to do much with a certain amount of energy. A recent F1 GP had a car that ended the race with less than 1 liter of gas, something that is against regulations. He did not ran out of gas, he just didn't managed it well. Now imagine everytime race direction does something stupid they forbid all cars from using a liter of available gas that is in the car. Add to that that the race duration isn't X laps, but X time + 1 lap. They had plenty of juice left, the alloted energy was severily diminished that race. The real reason was because the leading rider was 12 seconds too early to finish the lap and made all cars have to do another extra lap

@@joeking433 that's not the reason they're going downhill. They already made the Livewire but we can see how well that's selling. The main issue with electric bikes is range. They don't have the space that cars do for massive battery packs so most electric bikes struggle to get 60-80 miles of range before needing to be recharged for several hours. The problem is Harley hasn't modernized their gasoline bikes to stay competitive with everyone else. Most of their engines and frames have basically been the same designs for at least 40 years while everyone else has made lighter, more powerful bikes that also cost less. Harley has been kept alive by catering to the same generation of customers for the past few decades, but the problem is that generation is getting too old to ride (their 3rd best selling bike is a 3-wheeler) and in a couple decades they're gonna be dying off. Now, their new Revolution Max engine looks promising, but it cost them a pretty penny to develop so it's gonna be a while before they pay it off. Let's just hope it's not too little, too late.

You can definitely still use a manual with an electric motor. That's what a lot of the dc motors would do since they don't like to "rev" as high and have a much more limited power band. Even a single 100kw dc motor would work (~80hp, but 300 or more lbs pounds) This would still keep that feel of a miata and work with a manual. Weight on the other hand will just have to wait untill technology catches up. Or just have only 120 miles of range.

10:58 while I like hearing Formula E being mentioned, this seemingly simple fact doesn't tell the story as it's wrong. The race had a lot of safety cars and during each safety car the FIA virtually reduces the amount of energy a car is allowed to use. So they only "virtually" ran out of battery life or you can say they ran out of the energy that they were allowed to use. The cars could've easily all finished on the battery charge and even kept on going longer, but as the series is highly focused on being energy efficient and forcing energy saving driving, they virtually limit what you're allowed to use.

The Miata, since its conception, has always been more than just about the handling characteristics. They are about the sound, the feel, the fit, jinba-ittai. Don’t forget that the Miata wouldn’t have been produced had it not been for the owner of Mazda going for a drive in an old British Roadster, in order to understand the purpose of a roadster. Sure the car has always been great for racing but for those of us on the roadways, it’s always been fun and had sound characteristics of an MGB or Triumph Spitfire. An electric application may satisfy the drive feel of a Miata but it will never replace the sounds of one. Not to mention saying good bye to the third pedal Miata for good. 😢 No more clutch, no more high rev engine sounds, no more *snik snik* sounds of the shifter going into gear after gear. All this will do is skyrocket the price of the old Miatas as they are. Electric cars can be fun, not doubting them at all, but they are their own animal. They can never replace the sound and feel of our internal combustion engines. ICE’s are becoming an enthusiast only commodity.

The generation of brains that associate ICE sounds with speed and power will grow old and fade away. They will be replaced by brains that associate quietness and smoothness with speed and power. @@VTOffRoadAdventures The way it was presented in the video made it seem like it was due to the actual capacity of the batteries, which it was not. It was used almost as an argument against EV's which is misleading. That specific race was pretty catastrophic. The safety car was on the track for about seven times if I remember correctly. And every time the safety car is on the track the officials "remove" energy from the cars batteries to compensate for the lower usage when driving slow. In this case the teams didn't know how to correctly adapt to the situation and ended up using too much energy. @CameronsCars

@Cozmcraes
@Cozmcraes 2 жыл бұрын
Those swaps are mostly done with manuals because its an easier conversion. You can just make up an adaptor plate and make a female fitment on the motor to connect to the input shaft and its essentially ready to go. You could do 'better' swaps like fitting motors directly to the rear wheels or fitting a Tesla motor in the axle etc but they involve a lot more fabrication and potentially more software tinkering. With electric motors, there is no need for manual transmissions so I can't see any way of saving them.
@bradleyisfishing
@bradleyisfishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cozmcraes there’s no need for them anyways. The manual is, at this point, not better than automatics. Just more fun to drive. I think people would hate the idea of the electrification of camaros and such less if you could get a manual. Electrification means you’re just putting different body styles on an electric chassis and making some faster. You don’t have the scream of a v8 to make it different from a Camry and you don’t have the unique sounds of a boxer in a wrx to make it different from a minivan, it’s all just electric. Also, there’s gotta be more than an adapter plate to the swap, how would you rev match? The gears would have to become insanely short to compensate for the very high revs of electric.
@Cozmcraes
@Cozmcraes 2 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyisfishing To the best of my knowledge, you just pick a gear and leave it there with EV conversions. Theres no need to shift. I've seen videos of builds and driving with them but haven't been in one myself. Never seen a clutch fitted to one. I started riding electric motorcycles and I love the silence. Noisy engines now feel obnoxious to me 99% of the time, especially in urban areas. They are fun at racetracks to begin with but after a while, the noise isn't enjoyable anymore, its just extra background noise pollution. The used to be a company called Brammo who made a 6 speed electric motorcycle and I got a chance to ride one of them. It was a mega cool piece of kit but the gears were pointless. Most owners would just leave it in 3rd and these were oldskool motorcycle riders so you'd expect them to want gears. There no chance consumers buying new cars will want a manual transmission electric. I found that all the EV haters I have met had either never driven/ridden one or had only been on e-scooters and golf cart.

@@Cozmcraes all valid points. With regard to the last part, it’s less so I mean people hate electric cars and more so they don’t like traditional enthusiast cars going all electric. There's going to have to be some serious advances in battery tech in the next 9 years to get me to give up my ICE Miata for a EV Miata. Weight isn't the only factor for me, it's range. I use my Miata for taking road trips and if I have to stop every 200 or so miles and wait an extended period of time for my car to recharge, that is kind of a deal breaker for me.

and the thing is its not even that much more eco friendly: 1. The car batteries are made in environmentally devastating lithium mines and 2. Your electricity (which the cars run on) comes from coal!

They will. With more demand comes more research and development. ICE cars came thus far since the 1900s. Electric cars came very far in just a short period, in comparison. If electric cars gains the traction it deserves, we will see much more advance tech, vehicles in out lifetime. Amphibious, if you will.

Wouldn't you stop every 200 miles for a rest break anyway though? The modern systems can recharge really fast.

in the radio controlled model car racing leagues, battery swaps in the 'pit stops' are allowed for the endurance events so if they can make an electric sports car with a modular battery compartment, that could be a thing for actual electric race cars too, it would add cost and complexity and you would have to buy more batteries for a race event but the price of batteries is coming down anyway

I mean it's not hard to increase power if the car has no power to begin with. It's like increasing a Cappucino's power by 80%. It sounds impressive on paper but really isn't.

Wow, I'm glad I still have my '91. It's a GREAT platform with hardly any nannies. ABS was optional, as was power steering. Both are things I could add/delete with simple bolt-on swaps. Super simple. Cheap and easy to work on. Parts are cheap The engine bay is absolutely cavernous (an LS-swap requires one clearance modification but it's not for the engine - the bell housing on the T56 transmission is what needs the room). The old NA models don't have a ton of electronics to figure out. Book value for my '91 is around $3k. But I wouldn't sell it at any price. Especially now that they're going full electric in 2030.

Every time I hear someone say cars like the Miata, 86 or BRZ need more power it's hard not to shake my head... more power would mean more expensive and that kind of defeats the purpose of these cars. A wise man once said "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow".

I have owned an NB, I currently have a track oriented NC, and a Tesla Model 3 Performance. Variety is the spice of life. There is nothing in this world like mashing the Tesla and being sucked back into your seat. The instant torque is amazing, and make other cars seem clunky. HOWEVER there is also nothing like hitting the twisties in a Miata listening to the exhaust and rowing through their wonderful gear box. Plenty of room for both.
