Its sorta odd. After a certain point I'm not sure it actually feels colder. Past -30c your boogers are like daggers frozen in your nose and everything hurts but it feels no different at -40 for me. I think at some point cold is just cold and your senses are too overwhelmed to know the difference.
@stellabelikiewicz15235 жыл бұрын
kali ward I feel like “My nose is currently stabbing itself” is my new cold weather metric! I just got a new drivers license that will make visiting Canada super easy, but maybe should save those trips for May! 😁

@@stellabelikiewicz1523 lol yea august is the nicest month here I think, it's different everywhere though, ontario doesnt get as cold as the west but sometimes the east coast gets buried in snow which doesnt happen as bad here in the west. Also sometimes the east coast gets wet cold that glues all the car doors shut I've heard but we usually dont get that in the midwest area so I'm thankful for that

You are such a fantastic mouse mom!!! And your little mice are all so happy, healthy and loved! Now they've had attention and treats and warm porridge ---They'll snuggle up with each other and have a warm and cozy night for sure! It can be challenging staying warm when it's sub zero ---- When we lived up north I worried most when we had an ice storm possibly taking out power. It helped we had a lovely wood stove and lots of firewood --- but cold is not fun!

They all have a paper based bedding called Uber on the bottom of their cages, except for Amara's troup. Amara has allergies so to stop her from sneezing, her cage is lined with bathmat carpeting or paper towel.

CreekValleyCritters, I have a ratty with chronic lung disease so I struggled with the same issue. In case anyone is interested, I buy furniture pads made of recycled denim from U-Haul. They're $7.95 for a large blanket which I can cut to make two sets of cage tray covers (for a double Critter Nation). I usually sew two layers together and then quilt them to prevent my current troublemakers from tunneling between the layers. It's very good at absorption and odor control, and washable.
@lisaenglert32024 жыл бұрын
DrKate L. A lot of Guinea pig owners use them for the bedding as well. Guinea Dad makes very nice ones with a bamboo fiber layer. Edit sandwiched between fleece. Maybe that would work for you?

Don't know if you see this in time and I'll have to make my own decision. I've been trapping and relocating the mice in my apartment to a large wooded park a 20 minutes bus ride away. This time a Tin Cat (smaller triangle shape for corners) caught two. But the large juice cap that is used for water is filled up with food (seeds, bread crumbs, etc) I usually give it 48 hours before I relocate any mice in the traps. (After that the water start to evaporate and has to be refilled). But since the water cap is now filled up I wonder if I should relocate tomorrow (Thursday) instead of Friday. I put in Apple slices via the air holes so they can get some moisture. (Techinally, they can get moisture from the food in the water cap since it absorb the water). I peeked in a few minutes ago and the slices are scattered over the trap floor and yes, some of the slices are now in the water cap. 😩 So any advice? Relocate Thursday or Friday? Thanks.
@CreekValleyCritters5 жыл бұрын
Best to relocate as soon as you can. Being trapped in a small space is very stressful to wild mice. They dehydrate and go into shock very easily.
@cheritripp94705 жыл бұрын
Thursday it is then. ☺. Thanks. I looked in a half hour ago and the one I could see was washing his face so I guess he's still calm. That's what I like about the Tin Cats. They're very roomy even with my adding food and water and so far every mice caught remain calm inside. The corner one however is smaller and I had room for the water cap but the food had to be scattered over the trap floor.
@cheritripp94705 жыл бұрын
Update: It turn out there were three not two (either one was hidden or came into the trap during the night). I'd picked a fallen tree with lots of nooks and crannies. One was a bit scruffy and I had to put my gloves on to urge him out (the fact that he walked not run out was a bit worrying). The other two was hidden in the two doorways. I had to tilt the trap down so they could slide out. Once they hit the ground they took off. That was the first batch of mice that buried the water. The other mice captured in the other Tin Cats didn't do that.

What types of mice are these? I've owned fancy rats and mice over the years. All my mice are white with red eyes. Just curious about the color patterns kind of like fancy rats.
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
These are domesticated mice, also called fancy mice. They come in a lot of different colors, shapes and hair types. Mine have a long haired gene, a few have a satin gene (shiny metallic fur), mine come in ginger, brown, black, white and pinto, a few siamese, and quite a few have an obesity gene lol

Geno Mantequilla males typically shouldn’t be housed with other males due to territorial behaviour and can kill each over, however females should definitely be housed together in at least pairs but dynamics are better in groups of 3+ :)
@kaliward88505 жыл бұрын
Like rats mice are very social so it is a bit rough having them on their own. I dont think it's impossible to meet their needs but you would need to be handling them alot and it's really ideal for them to have friends. A few females together is the simplest combo. Please make sure they have room to play and ventilation. We had a weird situation where ours would get really lethargic in the fishtank we had them in initially and even with a mesh top it was hard to keep ventilated. Edit: it was a 30 gallon tank so lots of room, just not enough air
