There were also some subtle educational aspects to the show, many “taught” by Jiminey Cricket. One “lesson” remains with me to this day at age 73. Jiminey Cricket taught kids where to go for specific information. One place was the encyclopedia. He sang a catchy jingle in which he spelled the word E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-E-D-I-A. I can still hear that jingle in my head, and that’s how I learned to spell encyclopedia at a very young age.

I was a very young girl (DOB 1948), and especially liked the girls who were excellent tap dancers. I was fascinated by their incredible talent, also somewhat jealous because I wanted to dance like that. My dream was to BE a dancing Mouseketeer. I don’t remember their names, just their amazing tap dancing skills. So my mother enrolled me in a dancing school which only taught ballet. I found that I loved ballet, and took ballet lessons through age 18. Ballet is still a lifelong passion, and I watch KZbins of professional ballet dancers. The MMC had a truly positive influence on me for my entire life because of those dancing Mouseketeers!

I remember the Encyclopedia Song, and can still see that damned cricket dancing over the letters as he sang. I still spell the word "Mississippi" to the cadence of the tune they had for it. When I first saw the MMC, I had no idea that it was already in reruns, and so thought that Karen and Cubby were close to my own age, so as a child, they were my first focus, and my crush was toward Karen. Later, when I saw Annette in a bathing suit in her beach movies, my attitudes changed. : - ) I always wished that Jimmie would have been my uncle. I guess the best thing to know about him was that he really was the person we saw on TV.

But it was Jiminey Cricket who sang that catchy jingle in which he spelled the letters E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-E-D-I-A. Jimmy Dodd may have done the actual teaching (I don’t remember that part). What sticks in my mind is Jiminey’s song spelling “encyclopedia”. Maybe it was to reinforce Jimmy Dodd’s teacher part. When I was 5 or 6 years old, that song is what I remember. Perhaps Jimmy Dodd did the actual teaching. If so, I stand corrected. However, I do give all the credit to Jiminey Cricket who sang that song spelling out the word “encyclopedia” which taught me to spell it.

@Phillip-on3ce4 ай бұрын
@@oldhardrock2542 The Mickey Mouse Show was only in production for three years, 1955-1958. Reruns of the Mickey Mouse Show were shown in the 1960's along with other 1950's children's shows like "Fury", the "Roy Rogers Show," and "Sky King." At the end of the 1958 season, only Annette was kept on the Disney payroll. The 1958-1959 season of the Mickey Mouse Club was reruns of the first three seasons. Annette loved the tv show Zorro, and Mr. Disney put her on the show for several episodes in 1959. Also, he put her in the popular "Shaggy Dog" movie in 1959 with Tommy Kirk. I believe Mr. Disney ended the Mickey Mouse Club because the most popular children were growing up too fast , and no longer fit their roles. Bobby and Darlene were 14, Annette 13, and Doreen and Lonnie 12 when the show premiered in 1955. By 1960, these most popular performers would have been 18-19 years old. A Mickey Mouse cartoon drawn in 1955 would still appeal to kids 9-12 years of age in 1960, but they would be the younger brothers and sisters of the kids who had watched the show in 1955. The original 1955 fans would have grown up by 1960, and left the show behind just as they had outgrown "Captain Kangeroo." Disney would have needed to replace the oldest kids every year to keep the show going. Disney did attempt to slow the aging process by picking kids who were small for their ages, and could appear younger than they were. Bobby was the tallest of the Mouseteers at 5'8" as an adult , with the other boys about 5'5" or 5'6" . The girls were all small, as you will notice that Annette was one of the tallest girls in 1955, but she was only 5'1" as an adult. Annette was also the first of the girls to undergo the puberty thing, and her passage to womanhood was very obvious by the second season.

I also watched a lot of Captain Kangaroo then, which I learned later had its broadcast debut on the same day as MMC. Many memories come back when I watch KZbin videos and I wish there were more. I wasn't aware of Doreen back then but now see her as a versatile and likeable cast member, there from beginning to end. I saw a TV interview of her and at one point the interviewer handed her a photo of the cast. She smiled and commented on two Mouseketeers: "Our beloved Annette, our star. Darlene was the most talented of all the Mouseketeers - she could do everything, very well." I also came to appreciate Cheryl with the radiant smile. She was Wally's girlfriend on Leave It to Beaver among other roles. I found a passage in the autobiography of Frank Bank (Call Me Lumpy) who played Lumpy Rutherford, commenting on Cheryl's several guest appearances: "Cheryl was a doll. I loved Cheryl. We all did. She was a good kid. And she wasn't stuck up either. She was good people."

I remember watching when I was about two years old. Karen was my favorite, and I was jealous of Cubbie. I actually thought that Mickey was going to draft me into the club someday. Trivia: Walt only choose two of the Mousketeers, the first Roy and the last, Annette. And Roy was in the selection process of the others. Personally, I think the show was cancelled because to older Mouseketeers were too old to do another season, and Walt probably figured that a big cast change would ruin the show (no Lonnie, Darlene, Bobby, Tommy, and probably Annette).

Actually the show was still getting tremendous ratings. Walt and ABC could not reach a deal. He then bailed and went to NBC.

I'm now 75. We would all rush home after school to watch the Micky Mouse Club show. We knew all the songs, names and the weekly show schedule. We had our favorite Mouseketeers. The boys ALL loved Annette. At school we would reenact the previous day's show at school. The "popular" kids would mimic the Mickey Club cast members. Our parents finally took our family of four from Milwaukee, Wis. to Disneyland when I was 19. It was an appreciated trip! My wife and I had our honeymoon at EPCOT. Not over crowded in spring before school let out. We've wisited several times over the years and I was band parent chaperon several times to Disneyworld.

Favorite was Annette. From Mouseketeer all the way to "Beach Party" and ... oh ... that bathing suit! It was apparent that all those kids had incredible talent. For network TV, we did not get to see much of the kids though, as everything was repeated so many times it became unwatchable. The minus, for me, was the overly excessive repetitions of each show. Did I mention the repetitions? I loved the "Spin & Marty" series, Jiminy Cricket, and all the other aspects of the show.

We also visited Disneyland that summer when my Grandmother came out from Chicago. When I was 8, we went to Disneyland where the Mousekateers were doing a P.R. event, I met Annet & another girl. They couldn't be bothered by little kids & snubbed me. My sis was engaged to a man that was BBF to Tim Considine & stand in for Tim on My 3 Sons. I got to go to Desilu & watch a shoot. Tim came to our house in Sunnyvale & all my friends were WOWED!

Speaking of the Beach movies, nearly every female in the cast wore a bikini(nowhere NEAR what the term means today!) EXCEPT Annette, whose closest nod to the fashion was a two-piece suit, which left only her midriff bare. Most of the time, she wore a regular one-piece. Didn't hide her figure, but didn't REVEAL anything much either
