An exciting modern-day reimagining of John Wyndham’s science fiction classic starring Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley. Midwich is a quiet commuter town where nothing much happens. That is, until the twilight hours of a late summer’s day, when everyone within a set area of the town falls unconscious. The curious incident seems temporary and those affected regain consciousness, but every woman of child-bearing age inside the zone has suddenly and inexplicably fallen pregnant. As the children of the phenomenon grow, it becomes clear they are not of this world.

One of the most unsettling parts of the original story was the way the different women had babies that all looked very similar. This version we have had to represent every racial minority group. Yet another rehash of a good story ruined by ‘diversity’. Won’t be watching this any more.

I get the importance of POC characters in fiction, and I have no intend of being racist, but I think it would be waaay more interesting if all the kids were the same like in the book. @facetsofspacey4159

On the other hand this version can also make it more "creepy" because you as a watcher can more forget the alien nature and understand more the attachments the mothers form to their children, it's also more helpful to further the plotline (SPOILERS) of nathan and the attachment we see there, we are easier relate to him even though hes an alien.

It’s why they cast a black woman to play Anne Boleyn in a recent production about Henry VIII. And before you accuse me of racism, or any other such nonsense, I am not in the slightest bit racist. The book, and the original had the children with yellow eyes, blonde hair, and silvery, pale skin. They bared no resemblance to their parents, because they were aliens. It worked and it made them more creepy. I’m not saying this new one won’t be good either, I’m certainly gonna watch it. I can’t see it improving on the 60’s version though.

@@zeddeka I have no issue with black people moving in next door, or anywhere else for that matter. Shoehorning in black characters to appeal to some woke agenda, is unnecessary though. In the book, they looked exactly as they did in the film. Changing that, takes away some of the spooky element. This box ticking nonsense needs to stop. Before they make programs now, they must have a list of all the minorities, just to make sure they don’t miss one. Especially concerning black people and LGBTQ. I’m not racist and have no issue with black people or any other minority for that matter. Making Anne Boleyn black however is just another example of this lunacy. lot of comments being "i'm not racist but..." "it's too woke" listen. I think that making the kids different is: A. Is more visually interesting. Adds to the idea of "self" versus "collective mind" that the children share. They ARE individuals (a fact that Zellaby points out to her granddaughter). B. adds to the dread that the parents would feel looking at a child that looks partially like the mother! Knowing that they are not fully human but look just enough alike! We are not in the 50's anymore, communities are diverse and i think that it would only add to harmful stereotypes if the ONLY mothers that didn't like their children because they were blonde and blue eyed were the POC women, i don't think that's fair. I think from the perspective of the mothers, it's harder to detatch themselves from their space children! Adds to the drama! So call me woke, but we live in a diverse world, and let's be real, Wyndham's book was definitely sexist in many ways. I won't deny the impact it had on horror, but I think making it ""woke"" as so many comments have been saying, will make it better because not everyone in the UK is white. We should celebrate it.

Some of you points i agree with, but you can't deny it this has to stop. Old are goldens, yes, but it doesn't mean we have to bring it back. You're right, we're not in the 50s anymore and john wyndhams book are sexist, so why we have to watch this again? Why they're making this? One of the vital reasons why i don't watch remake, adaptations, etc because People just gonna keep complaining it's not the same like the original, and there's other people who accept it and think it's necessary for the changes. This will only result of never end debate. The industry entertainment is running out of ideas and start remaking olds one for nostalgia sake, and i can just easily predict it how is gonna progress, i'm just so tired with all the cycles. Midwich cuckoos are classic and it shouldn't be repeated again, just leave it on it's place like all the ogs and don't try to change it. Somethings are better left untouched.

It really pains me that in the trailer they say "from the writer of The Nigh Manager". As someone who's has a special appreciation for John Wyndham - when I was 8-9 years old and told my mother I wanted to read sci-fi and she gave me his books (the midwhich cuckoos among them). I have never stopped reading sci-fi since and read his books several times, the guy deserves some credit. Few years later his books also became the first books I read in English to improve my English reading when I found out the availability of good sci-fi in my native tongue (Dutch) was (and still is) kinda limited.

I second that comment from Adrian. Keeley is fabulous in every part she takes on. I have to say though a review I read about Midwich Cukoos from guardian feminist writer Lucy Mangan was absolutely ludicrous. Suggesting that writer David Farr's Approach to the screenplay that is to remain faithful to John Wyndhams original plot, was a detriment to the project. Go figure?

Only just found out about this. I'm a big fan of John Wyndham, in fact I'm currently reading the Day of the Triffids. Really not sure about this adaptation, I see they're not going with the golden eyes, blonde hair which is a rather iconic part of the children. Also setting in the modern day feels like it'll ruin some of the mystery around the story. Looking at the cast list it looks like they've changed Professor Gordon Zellaby to Dr Susannah Zellaby and made the character younger as well as female. Not necessarily a negative change but it looks like it'll impact the story as she appears to be one of the mothers (book version is Zellaby's daughter who's pregnant). Also I don't see any sign of Richard and Janet Gayford in the cast, so maybe instead of them being the perspective of the story it'll be this DCI Paul Kirby & Dr Zellaby as the main characters. I'm hoping the show as a whole is more subtle than this trailer makes it out to be, the music for starters sounds very generic horror film, with plenty of Inception noises thrown in. Plus did they have to go so obviously evil with all the kids? If there's one positive I can see it's that they are using the ORIGINAL title, which some people clearly don't know judging by the comments.
