Thank you for another classic recipe. When I was growing up in Glasgow there seemed to be a trend for dark baked goods. Steak pie had a burnt edge to the pastry lid, scotch morning rolls had to have burned tops, plain bread had its burnt crusts and scotch pies had to have burnt edges. I was not a fan, but I had to eat it. My parents and gran were still in the wartime mindset of fear of wasting food. I, however, was a child of the 60s and didn’t see the point of eating burnt food. From the old it’ll give you curly hair, to the think of the starving Biafrans, to the threats of you will eat that or else. 🤷🏻♀️😄

Magnificent! My all-time favourite pie. I have found a place in Brisbane that sells these warm. I can't drive past without buying two pies!

Brings back memories, this was ‘Thursday night tea’ for us growing up, with chips, Heinz baked beans, bread & butter & a big dollop of HP! We all loved it 😍, but my Dad being an old school, diehard Irish man wouldn’t eat this for a meal, he thought it was a snack food! So once again my poor mum had to cook 2 different meals. 😁😋

So bummed that during our wee holiday in Scotland we didn’t get to try one of these. Since then, my wife has attempted this recipe and we loved it. Your videos are wonderful thank you so much for your videos!

Cheryl -they look lovely and simple to make 😋 Suet Pastry is one of my favorites and so easy to make: Add suet and self raising flour to a mixing bowl, ratio by weight 1 part suet to 2 parts flour (a good sprinkle of herbs of you choice -optional) then start gradually adding cold water and mixing until it forms a malleable dough. No need to kneed, just roll it out on a well floured surface. Use as soon a possible as it doesn't keep for long periods of time. Ideal as as top for a savory pie, the top gets lovely and crispy and the bottom squidgy as it absorbs some moisture from your pie filling. Same recipe makes lovely dumplings to bake on top of a casserole.

I'll give these ago. I was put off Scotch Pies due to pies full of gristle from butchers in my local area. But yes I'll make my own, they look very tasty. I'm a buttery mash and gravy kind of chap.

Thanks for this. I am Scots but have lived in London for 40 plus years. Finding Haggis, Tunnocks Tea Cakes, even Irn Bru ugh) no problem. Potato scones, Lorne sausage, Bridges and Scoth pies unobtainable - even from posh food stores like Harrods and F&M. I believe a small Scots food store has opened in North London but it is difficult for me to get to. When I lived in Glasgow we called them mutton piesand ate them on Saturday with baked beans and mash. Looking on line for such pies from Scottish butchers like Campbells all the pies are made of beef. I thought I was imagining mutton but it seems my memory was right. I guess mutton is hard to get hold of these days (though possibly available at Halal and Carribean butchers) so manufacturers are substituting beef mince.

Loooooove Scotch pies 😋😋😋 Sadly I've not had one for about 43 years though. Coeliac now so I'd have to see if I can use GF flour instead. Might not give the same result. I have to buy GF haggis too which I also love 😋
@enkisdaughter479523 сағат бұрын
I too have Coeliac, so understand the difficulties of working with GF pastry. Try making individual ones in cupcake tins and use a pastry tamper to push the pastry into the pan. I’m off to order one now. Hope it works😁

Is mutton and lamb the same animal? Only mutton is an older lamb? Sorry not a native English speaker.
@WhatsForTea2 күн бұрын
Mutton = older sheep Lamb = young sheep 🙂
@andrewcoates66412 күн бұрын
Mutton is normally the name given to the meat of a sheep that has been kept alive for at least 18 months before being slaughtered but it can be kept for up to 4 years old , but by that age the sheep start having dental problems leading to tooth decay and loss and death by starvation because they can no longer chew their food. Lamb meat can be sold as lamb from any sheep up to 2 years old or so so there is an overlap between an old lamb or a younger mutton which a skilled butcher or slaughter man can use to give their customers the impression that they are buying lamb when they are actually being sold mutton, this is where the expression “ mutton dressed as lamb”, has it’s roots as in talking about a woman who is getting on in age but puts on the make up and clothes that would usually be worn by females who are more of an age to be their daughters, especially when they dress in that way as a deliberate attempt to attract a younger male in anticipation of an instant relationship, also known as a s*xual brief encounter, or a quickie with a granny.

This looks yummy. Unfortunately, minced lamb or minced mutton costs way more than minced beef where I live.$12.99/lb for lamb or mutton vs $4.99 to $6.99 for beef. Roasts are even more expensive for both lamb/mutton and beef.
