There was nothing to blame as it is. He wasn't being paid by Paul/ECW either at all at that point or properly every show/month whatever they did. He did what he had to do to make sure his family had food to eat and a roof over their head. ANY OF US would have done the same thing I'd imagine. The issue is the wrestling business is gross and a literal carny show lol and the fans (and at the time ECW fans especially) were so "hardcore" and only accepted certain things as wrestling gospel as it were, if you know what I mean. So someone who is the ECW world champion leaving to go go the "enemy" promotion of WCW or WWF, were bad and deserved the hate they gave them.

Im glad mike agreed to drop the title, he could of pulled a medusa and threw it in the trash on wcw television or mailed it to paul but he agreed to do business and go out on his back so to speak. Classy and nothing but respect to him for that. I also cant fault a man for doing whats best for his family at the time. Paul was bouncing checks like Michael Jordan bounced basketballs.

Mike Awesome was apparently hesitant to have the final match with Taz, as he was concerned that Taz might try to legitimately choke him out during the finish. Which is why he puts his arm up during the Tazmission, so that Taz can't get his arm fully around Awesome's neck. It's also why the match was so short. He stayed at a separate hotel, didn't come into the locker room, and had Doug Dillinger accompany him to the building. Mike Awesome has also said in shoot interviews that he wished that he'd been put in the ring against Rhino that night to drop the title, as he trusted him and thinks they could have had a great match.
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 3 ай бұрын
It's a shame Awesome even thought that was a possibility. I don't know if Taz would have been capable of doing that or not, since he had his own issues with ECW obviously. But I'd imagine Awesome did all that to protect himself just in case AND try to make Taz (or whoever in the end) look good even if the match was super short knowing what was going to happen shortly after with both Awesome going to WCW and Taz going back to WWF (I think he was in WWF already, I can't even remember that far back anymore lol).

@LordLOC yeah taz was in wwf at the time of the match as taz was jobbed to triple h on smackdown a few days later
@Beavis-ry6tj
@Beavis-ry6tj 3 ай бұрын
@@LordLOC Yeah this was on the 13th April 2000. Taz had debuted for the WWF in January at the Royal Rumble. Although Mike Awesome had shown up on Monday Nitro on the 10th, but hadn't wrestled yet due to Paul Heyman claiming he had a contract with ECW. Which despite Awesome claiming was completely false, and even saying that Heyman had forged his initials on one, Turner apparently paid $50,000 in a settlement. Awesome was suspicious because he was friends with the guys in the ECW locker room, so didn't know why Taz was the one picked to take the title. And he suspected something might happen because of Taz's loyalty to Heyman. The whole thing also kind of sucked because Taz lost a triple threat match along with Saturn to Crash Holly the next night on Raw, jobbed out to Triple H on Smackdown, and then lost the title to Tommy Dreamer in his one and only defence just 9 days after winning it. Who in turn dropped it to Justin Credible that same night. Rhino could have been a dominant ECW Champion for a decent run, and worked with the likes of RVD, Jerry Lynn, Lance Storm, Balls Mahoney, Tajiri, Steve Corino, Sabu, Masato Tanaka, etc.
@lewisb85
@lewisb85 3 ай бұрын
@@Beavis-ry6tj But as we know now Taz is a fake badass who refused to work shamrock etc because he couldn't. I hated the whole transitional champion thing like taz was. in regards to the contract thing apparently it was his relation Hulk Hogan who desperately wanted him out of ECW (Mike was Horace's cousin, when hulk adopted Horace after his parents died that made hulk mike's adopted uncle, hulk and horace also introduced mike to steve keirn who trained him). Im guessing it was because of Hulk's influence turner paid a "just get him out of there" call was made.
@achimsinn6189
@achimsinn6189 3 ай бұрын
Whatever was planned - picking Taz was weird. If you are so worried about the continuation of your title after your champion left the company, why would you book another wrestler who is in another different promotion for winning it from the leaving champion? I can see how awesome is suspicious of that as other guys like Rhino would have been a much more logical pick from a booking standpoint.

You would've thought with how crazy their "hardcore" wrestling was that they'd have more injuries and some actual deaths in ring. But yeah a lot of ECW talent (and wrestling talent as a whole) were addicted to a lot of pain killers, muscle relaxers and booze. I don't really expect guys who are popping 50-100 vicodins a day and washing it down with a gallon of booze, daily, to live very long.

@@BrandanTheBroker Actually I doubt very much Paul/ECW would have won any litigation - they would have been in breach of contract for not paying Awesome for months on end. Now should Awesome have done things different, if you believe in protecting the business above all else etc. then I suppose so. But if you believe he was doing what he had to do to survive and keep his career going - he did what he had to do agreeable or not, right? In the end, the breach of contract stuff would have basically negated anything Awesome did legally outside of his ECW contract AFAIK because once the contract is breached/broken it's basically null and void. I think. I'm no lawyer of course.

This is the video I was waiting for. Mike Awesome's ECW run (especially the 99/2000 one) was what convinced me that he was it. I do agree with your assessment of him being a big fish in a small pond as that is what my thoughts are upon revisiting this time period here many years later. To address some of your points. The Whipwreck beating was because he had just come back from WCW & was being put through a few beatings to climb back up the ranks. It was also the beginning of the angle where Mikey slowly started to lose his insanity before being taken under the wing and corrupted by The Sinister Minister. The New Jack getting a powerslam through the table to the outside instead of the usual powerbomb I would have to assume (looking strictly from a workers POV) was a New Jack call he made himself, probably not being comfortable with the powerbomb spot & only agreeing to go through with it if only Awesome changed it to a more safer move. ECW as great as they were at finding people who had amazing great in-ring chemistry, also had the tendency to overbook those people in A LOT & sometimes back to back matches. Awesome & Tanaka were a victim of this, as were many others, particularly Tajiri/Super Crazy. This also becomes VERY apparent if you binge watch the weekly shows & Supershows/PPVs. A lot of repeat matches in short time frames. Taz getting his ass beat like that was just standard wrestling logic 101 of elevating & making the guy staying in the company look like a million bucks as you walk out the door. It's just an old tradition of paying respects to the company who made you. I too hate the immense hatred Awesome got from toxic fans & even the company itself for him leaving while he was their champ. Like, the dude wasn't getting paid & got a guaranteed offer to earn money elsewhere. I think anyone would leave a job where they were weren't getting paid to 1 where at least you had pay security. Anyway glad you've finally seen the light of why people praise Awesome so much & how they are so infuriated with how his subsequent WCW & WWF runs followed after this. However in saying that, I also feel like there wasn't TOO much that those companies could really do with him as they had guys bigger than him & with more charisma than he did. Awesome worked a mixture of a basic big guy style with sprinkles of basic high flying, which I feel was too ahead of his time in mainstream american wrestling in the 90s/00s. I feel like the big 2 were just never gonna go for that properly at the time & just have him tone down to work a normal big man style. At least WCW tried to get some personality out of him, even if the silly gimmicks didn't fly with fans (I personally thought they were hilarious in a so bad it's good type way). WWF just sorta had nothing for him. A true shame then, that more wasn't done with him when he & Tanaka stole the show at the first ECW ONS.

He was the epitome of "enhancement talent" that got over and made a career out of it. And then he went to WCW, and they barely used him, even though he was a marketable name as a former ECW world champion at that point. Marky had fun with that run, so it shows you how good Mickey was and if you give anyone a chance who can connect with the crowd or just pull off the right stuff in the ring - they get over. I'd like to think in another universe, wrestlers like Mickey and Brooklyn Brawler etc. got to be world champions in WWF/E at some point :D

I loved watching Mike Awesome in ECW. I can see how you'd think the matches against Tanaka were overkill when binge watching them, but when you're seeing them once a month or so, plus getting 10ish hours of WCWWF programming, there's so much else going on that they didn't feel repeatitive at the time.

I'd REALLY love to see a video on Mick Foley's/Cactus Jack's run in ECW...There was awesome absolutely amazing moments and matches in it and I think it'd be fun to watch! Hell, I'd love to see a video on his run in WCW as well. Not exactly as memorable but there are still great moments, and would make for a great video. I honestly don't think people talk about Cactus Jacks earlier runs enough. Honestly when people talk about him, 90% of it is basically always looking fondly at his WWE/Mankind run but the man had an such amazing career before he even got to WWF/E.

According to legend [and Joey Styles himself] the s-side dive by Awesome onto Smith is the night Joey Styles birthed his iconic "OH MY GAWD!" catch phrase.

Call me an idiot but i think awesome shouldve gotten an A at the very least. He was a double champion which is insanely rare in ROH. I would also argue most of his S's at most should've been Ds or Cs. Especially that Tanaka match which shouldve gotten a D due to the automatic upgrade rule in ROH. His tag title loss should've gotten a D since he pulled double duty and he also made history with that Taz and Awesome match. Genuinely idk how he didnt get an A. I would argue he was better then Trish's modern run at the very least
@Markyd123

The thing with Trish is I was impressed that she had been gone for so long and came back doing new stuff. Maybe it should have been an A for Awesome but I did find it a bit repetitive even though he gave his all.

@@Markyd123 You should do a video on Ric Flair during the 1980s JCP run. Maybe not include every match, but he was pretty repetitive too. He wrestled the same exact match for over 10 years.

@Markyd123 I understand your point, so I looked back in both runs. I watched all the matches and segments and seeing which one was better. Smack me one with a brick but I think awesome had a better run. Trish was impressive but in terms of importance awesome had the more important run. It's his magnum opes, while Trish's last run was just a footnote in her career. As for the repetition I get that but it shows how good awesome and Tanaka are together. They are fantastic dance partners and I can't find a single bad match between them. Also the accomplishments between those 2 runs aren't even close. Awesome was a double champion, that deserves an A for how incredibly rare it is on ROH.

I bought a N64 game from Japan back in '98 ($120, 3 month wait for delivery). The game was VPW2 (Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, I never heard about the 1st one) and playing it was the first time I'd ever seen Mike Awesome ('Gladiator') or Masato Tanaka. His 'Discus Elbow' is one of his finishers (called the 'Roaring Elbow').

My fav MIke Awesome moment is Heatwave 98, after Awesome got power bombed through the outside table, the fans went absolutely crazy. They were chanting inaudible stuff. When the finished chanting, after a short pause, they all synced up and started chanting "holy shit". Has there ever been a double chant like that before ?

Fun fact. Awesome was hindered in WCW in ring wise cause he couldn't fly around as much due too guys not wanting too work with him unless he toned down his high flying style due to his size. Awesome himself mentioned he enjoyed working with Scott Steiner as he was one of the few guys that allowed him too be stiff and do his original style ( minus the hardcore stuff) Basically WCW handcuffed him in multiple ways
