I'm dying here ! This diary is about as close to my neck of the woods as it gets. I live almost next to Lake Champlain but north. I know all the places they keep mentioning so it really brings it home. This goes along well with the pioneer diaries I've read about the struggles and the Indian attacks. Great stuff ! Also, having been an infantryman, I'll say that I sure am glad it was in this century and this nation and NOT with the British army back then. Yikes !

Had raw pork for dinner, went on picket with a quart of rum. Sounds like their diet was the real enemy in that war. Thoroughly enjoyed it thank you LibriVox. Fixing to drift off to sleep and join the boys in Dreamland 🌚🐐💨🎶

I think their biggest issue was sanitation; they had not yet discovered that latrines and water sources had to be widely separated.

Yes, and it a brilliant account from the diary journal's of the infantry shoulder, and from their own perspective oftentimes overlooked!

I live in Schenectady. I know all these towns. Its amazing how they walk from place to place. No one would walk from Saratoga too Schenectady. I walked from Albany too Schenectady. It was hard and hot.

Tory is the Anglicisation of the Irish word toiraidh, literally ‘pursued men’ or more figuratively ‘men on the run’. Particularly in 17th century Ireland, it referred to bandits or outlaws, often those driven from their lands by the Plantations that accompanied the Tudor and Stuart conquest of Ireland.

The constant interjection of clips to correct mispronunciation, add modern day names for historic areas and to read out footnotes, to the tune of several per minute make this narration very hard to listen to, they disrupt the continuity of the narrative completely.

The jumping between narrative and footnote kept taking me out of the main journal. I stopped listening after 10 minutes.

Thus the term ‘tory’ - an Irish term for bandit applied to the Catholic guerrillas who caused Cromwell’s force so many problems in the early 1650s - crept into English discourse. They English royalists, supporters of King and Church against Cromwell and his Commonwealth regime, could be derided with the term - guilty by way of association with the despised Irish Catholic brigands.

@7:30min you would think that an Brit would be able to get the pronunciation correct! Fort Duquesne is pronounced DOO-KAYNE! I get the won't of our Anglo-Saxon peoples to anglicized Franco syntax but still I try for my part to make an effort though I could care less about speaking Les France 🇫🇷!
