It is even crazier to think that the vast majority of what you are seeing in films like these are stars within a spiral arm of our own galaxy. And most of those stars have solar systems. Then you read up on the Hubble Deep Field picture and how that was taken.... it really does put things into perspective that our greatest achievements pale in comparison to what lies "out there." I like to think that even though I cannot physically see all of those stars with the naked eye, these new cameras show us they exist, and we are being showered with little, tiny photons they emitted long ago. We are connected in spite of our distance! So yeah, we are all alone in this big ole place. Makes sense, right? 😎😉

Take this for thought, the universe is a few billion light years in diameter? Some of those stars probably died or exploded millions of years ago and the light we see is that old? And light travels about 200k miles a second... consider that it’s mind blowing

Yosemite is a truly amazing place. I've been going there for over 50 years. Unfortunately, it's become a victim of its own beauty and fame. While always somewhat crowded, it has become so crowded now, that it is a real problem. Very unfortunate!

Where I live, I see some stars, but not very many. Same problem you have! Fortunately, I get to spend quite a bit of time in the spring and summer- when the Milky Way core is above the horizon- traveling to dark areas where there is no light pollution and the stars like to hang out and show off!!

I wonder if you go out in the ocean where on land light pollution is a factor. Will you be able to see the milky way in the middle of the ocean.

If you're on land in a light polluted area but looking out over the ocean, you might see a bit more, but it still could be a problem. Obviously, it will be better if you are at the beach by a smaller community. A beach at a big city would probably not be so good. Here is a link to our most recent film from 2018. Take a look at the scenes from 47 seconds to about 1:11. They were filmed from an area by a small town with about 7300 people. It worked out pretty well. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIS6ooxrjbR-mdU You should also be aware, that the Milky Way comes up from certain parts of the sky, depending on where you live. You want to be sure that when you are facing the ocean, you are looking in the correct direction, and at the right time. There is a very good app called Photo Pills which will give you all this information. Regards, BC

Yosemite Channel- Barry Chall Films after hurricane Irma hit us, everybody’s lights when out. I saw a little bit of the Milky Way. It was cool but it wasn’t that spectacular. I wish I had waited until about 2 in the morning that day to REALLY be able to see it.

Of course, you shouldn't expect to see nearly as much color and detail with the naked eye as a camera will pick up with high iso and a 15-30 second exposure. But, it's still pretty damned impressive.

Great comment! When we are out late at night filming these, it's always a humbling experience, and kind of helps put all our minor day to day problems in perspective. Yes, we do have some similar scenes, particularly some of the ocean scenes with the boat lights are similar to those in our 2019 film- The Milky Way a Journey across Land And Sea. I particularly like your scene at 2:17 with the tree foreground. It was REALLY NICE! I also see you had a go at Yosemite Tunnel View with the unfortunate but predictable result of timelapse killer headlights. We gave up on that one for night work but instead took advantage of the great sunrises you can get from there and used a lapsed sunrise in one of our other films. In spite of what many people think, the late night sky isn't really blue at all and these are the real colors. Thank you for your comment. We do feel fortunate to be able to access many dark sky areas where we can truly see the stars and make these films. Right now I'm in the editing process for a new night sky film for this year. With Covid, unpredictable weather, clouds, and smoke from numerous forest fires, it's been a real challenge. I'm adapting to this by utilizing some truly different techniques which should make for a very unique night sky film. Hopefully, it will be up on the channel within a couple of weeks.

Thanks! After having done this for sometime now, I think the most difficult part isn't the filming itself but the post production work where I often spend countless hours trying to edit out headlights, flashlights, etc. They can really kill a night timelapse.

Thanks Josh. It can be a bit challenging at first, but it gets easier and pretty routine after awhile. You'll pretty much end up using the same ISO, f stops, and shutter speeds everytime. The main thing is finding interesting foregrounds and backgrounds and the post processsing. On the otherhand, just when you think you've got it down, you end up doing something dumb like I did last weekend, shooting at night at Mt. Shasta. We were running 2 cameras and after a 2 hour time lapse at 1:30am, I realized I had one of the cameras set at f5.6 instead of f2.8. Damn!

3:34 look at that huge dark c sign formation in the galaxy just above that high mountain in the center of screen...always is there from the oldest picture of milky way to the newest ones ...wonder what keeps such huge formations in the same position for ever...you see that c formation at 1:55 and 1:05 and 1:41 and others too...btw interesting music

Amazing and beautiful. Starting at around 1:37and viewing at.025 speed I swear that I am seeing 3 maybe 4 shooting stars actually turn at right angle. It occurs In the lower right corner of screen. Anyone else notice this or am I nuts 😂

There are a few areas of the film where there are some strange anomalous movements like what you have described. These could be caused by what are known as hot pixals, which are ramdom lit up pixals in the camera sensor. They can come and go. The Sony cameras we use, particularly the A7R2, are known for this. When I see them in the foreground, they are easy to get rid of in the editing process, but when they are mixed with thousands of stars in the sky, they are virtually impossible to single out. There are also several parts of the film where you can see satellites. That being said, there are parts of the film which have some very strange things going on which may not be able to be explained by hot pixals. Any speculation would be welcomed!

By definition, any unexplained areal phenomenon is a UFO. I've had a talk with Barry regarding these anomalies and if you pay really really close attention, there are thousands in the whole video. All have different velocities. I think hot pixels, satellites and shooting stars explain a bunch, but still there are a lot unexplained. Simply the velocity-differentials (as well as angles and sudden disappearances) strike me as odd. Check out: 2:47 - Put it on big screen. And then check the upper region to the left of the big tree. From the bottom of the screen about 60% up vertically. And from left to right at about 30percent. Lots happening there.

benyamind Yes there is a ton of things going on, as you say, different velocities, variable directions some appear to actually go “up” ...lol I was thinking as far as the ones I was questioning that appeared to actually turn, might possibly be planes, but I don’t think that is correct either. By definition they are UFO’s and will probably remain a mystery .. regardless it captures the imagination and admire the effort put into these filming productions.

Yeah I think the ones you are referring to our airplanes. As it's time-lapsing it highlights the flight-path. And maybe that's a route or something. As for the really fast ones with a slight bend: Most of them definitely shooting stars. A shooting star in real-time is often relatively slow and this seems about right. As for satellites, he is capturing bits of the sky and we don't have enough up there to account for all the dots. That's unrealistic. Hot pixels, I don't have enough knowledge regarding their behavior visually to exactly know what is what. Some occurrences seem rather 'organic' to me though. And some I see I think are indeed hot pixels, moving a bit more mechanic and 'stuck'. Definitely interesting. But as you said, we should admire this film. The universe is humbling, very much. I have thought about the fact people often say it makes them feel small. Lately I've been having the opposite feeling, it makes me feel significant. Like somehow the earth is deeply significant.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response. The night you day- Holly grail- sequences were done using the Sony time lapse app which I had downloaded into the cameras. It has settings which worked well for this sort of thing.

Question. How come the night sky is so light blue sometimes in these types of videos? (Like at 0:45) Also, I keep seeing a yellow light around the horizon at night in these types of videos. It looks as if it's a sunset but it's not. Do you know what's causing that light? (Like at 0:15)

FANTASTIC QUESTIONS! I'm so glad someone finally asked them! Surprisingly to many, the night sky isn't really blue at all. Many photographers, including myself in this film, decide to color grade it in such a way as to give it a blueish tint. The reason for this is that most photographers just don't know any better and believe it to be correct. However, it is not. It certainly is much more popular with the general public and that's why I decided to grade this film in that manner. The real colors of the night sky are largely influenced by what is called airglow. It can range from bright green to yellow to very red. Here is a link to an article which explains it in fairly simple terms without going into lengthy scientific explanations. www.lonelyspeck.com/airglow/ Here is a link to our 2018 film which I graded to preserve what is know by astrophotographers as natural color. Right now I'm just finishing the post production on a new night film for 2019, which I hope to post within the next couple of weeks, it too is graded for non blue natural colors. Regarding the amber glow you commonly see in many night films at the horizon line, this is generally the result of light pollution from a nearby- or not so nearby- city or town, Again, GREAT questions and thank you for asking Regards, Barry Chall PS: Just realized you had been asking about the light blue at about 45 seconds. This was a sequence filmed just as it was getting dark and the moon was going down. In these twilight type sequences, the sky is still blue until it gets dark.

First of all, thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As regards the "star eater" issue, I feel that for time lapse, it's really an overrated problem. In fact, depending on what part of the Milky Way you are shooting, I'm not sure if it's even present. I haven't made a tutorial video, as I'm just reluctant to join the ranks of all the self appointed Internet experts out there and prefer to approach this with a certain degree of humility. However, if enough people requested it, it's something I might consider in the future. That being said, I have watched some tutorials from some pretty sharp people, and although I don't necessarily use the same techniques that they do, there are always things to be learned. I shot most of these sequences at very high ISO settings, ISO 12800 for 15-20 seconds, depending on the lens with regard to the 500 rule. I use Capture One Pro in post for all the preliminary color work and do tend to punch up the contrast and saturation in the sky, perhaps a bit more than others might and always use a separate masked adjustment layer for the sky. Perhaps this helps to bring out more of the fainter stars. I can't say for sure. Ian Norman over at Lonelyspeck.com has a recent article about "star eater" which says that the problem has apparently been solved by setting the camera to continous mode, rather than single mode. This does drop your raw bitrate down to 12 from its usual 14. I suspect that this wouldn't really be any problem at all, however. So, if you're concerned, that looks like a good fix. As regards to shooting at the high ISOs like I do, the only downside might be loosing some of the subtle star colors due to clipping. For a moving film, I consider this a total non factor, however for people doing stills for printing, etc., this could be a consideration. Theoretically, it shouldn't really matter if the ISO is higher, due to the sensor invariance of the R2 sensor, but I still think it may make some difference, when it comes to "star eater." We are planning on starting a new multi month, multi location, time lapse project next month and I do plan to play around a bit and compare results from continous mode to those I get from single, just to see if there is much of a difference. For that project, we'll be using two A7RIIs, and one A7SII, and I'm also curious to see if there is any difference in the way each camera responds. With any luck, that film should be up on the channel in September. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Regards, BC

I'm still using a Note 4, but unless something has drastically changed, Milky Way photography with a smartphone is just not feasible- at least if you want any kind of quality at all. For night sky photography, you really need a camera capable of shooting long exposures, often 15-25 seconds or more, at high ISOs, usually at least ISO 1600 and higher. Also, the lenses should be at least F2.8 or wider. Additionally, the sensors should be big and sensitive enough to allow for very low light photography without becoming noisy- very grainy looking. I just don't think that smartphone lenses and sensors are truly up to the task.
