Manufacturer recommendation is application of 4x per year. While applying weekly, will not harm your yard as stated in the video due to low Nitrogen content, you will begin to get an abundance of Phosphorus levels to the soil. Excessive Phosphorus levels reduces the lawn's ability to take up iron...which is the greening component you're getting out of the product. Not to mention the excessive cost you're accruing with overapplication....why would you be applying this weekly?

Get ready to mow! You're going to get heavy top growth. It may be slow release feeding, but N will get used as it becomes available. Since you have high maintenance KYB, a heavy dew will have the turf on an every other day mow. If the season turns wet, you're going to need a grounds crew or brush mower to keep up!

I found that applying at the "recommended" rate, it had little to no effect on the lawn. After a little experimentation, I found that applying a first application on setting 11 in one direction, followed by a second application on setting 11 in the opposite direction was the key for my lawn. Keep up the hard work, because the KBG stand will be worth it.

Urea _can_ volatilize (some portion of it turns into ammonia gas) when if gets damp and sits on the surface of the soil. With urea, the trick to avoiding volatilisation losses is to spread it just before it rains so the urea dissolves and infiltrates into the soil. A better form of urea to use is urea formaldehyde. It's a slow release form of urea that is water insoluble and relies on microbial activity to release the nitrogen in it in a form that plants can use. Because microbial activity is highest at about the same time that plant growth is at its most vigorous, the nitrogen from urea formaldehyde gets released right when your plants need it most, and that ensures that very little of your nitrogen is lost to volatilisation and runoff. That keeps environmental problems associated with fertilizer use to a minimum and it also means that a much larger proportion of the nitrogen you put out actually gets used by the plants you're targeting.

It will release the iron and nitrogen in part as soon as it is wet the first time. the part that is years is that it made from composed plant matter so unlike synthetics that only last a few months M will have a effect that can last up to 2 years. See the effect is is micro organisms that are alive in the soil . M will not kill then as the synthetic fert will. But do not take my word for it. go get a gallon of water split it into to equal parts and put two table spoons of any synthetic fert into one container and m in the other then put a dozen worms in each for 30 min then dump the water off. putting the worms into separate observation containers. 100% of the worms from the Synthetic fer should die within hours while the worms from M should be fine. now my point to this is the soil needs living organisms to be healthy soil. so you can now see which one will be healthy. Milo is slow release ,,, Al tho if you irrigate you can see a noticeable greener lawn the next day. I recommend Milo to all that want a green healthy lawn. But I have only been in lawn care since 1976.

I ran a sanitary district for 18 years and I know all too well what it is. Most processed sewage is used for tree farms and non-food crops fertilizer. Calling it "microbes" and organic is pure marketing crap.
@53toddk4 жыл бұрын
Agree, and Milwaukee residents thank all of you for buying their sewage residue (Milorganite) so they don't have to landfill it. All the stuff that goes down Milwaukee's toilets and street drains gets dried, burned, pelletized, and packaged nicely (with a few nutrients added to boost the NPK) for you to spread in your yard. Pure marketing genius.

Nice video, IMO going by the guidelines on the bag does not mean people are putting it down wrong, and increasing your spreader setting to the max doesn't mean you're doing it right. It can't hurt the lawn but for people with bigger yards will be spending more. I learned from LCN to go by "pounds on the ground". Use the square footage of the yard to determine how many pounds to put down..now your going by your own guidelines :)

My best defense for weeds is a thick lawn where weeds struggle to get a foothold. I use my Scotts spreader at max setting as well. You literally cant over-apply it. Just makes the grass darker green and thicker. I love the fact that I can broadcast it right into my flower and vegetable gardens and never have to worry about burn. Thanks for your enthusiasm. yeah I don't see how people compare organics to synthetics and then complain that organics are just hype when they don't even use the organics correctly. If their soil is dead, organics are going to work very slowly, unless they use compost teas or mycorrhizae on the lawn also. synthetics are good if you want to constantly have issues you have to buy something to fix it with.... I never have disease or deficiency issues in the areas where I practice good soil care

Milo has nitrogen, phosphorus and iron but no potassium. Potassium helps stressed lawns from heat and disease. I would get a soil test to see what you are lacking before applying anything. I did one and lack nitrogen and potassium. I applied two bags of milo 4 weeks ago and have not seen any results. Regardless when the weather cools here (105 in Texas) I will apply some potassium along with milo or a different fertilizer if I don't see any change. To answer your question apply the specified amount for your lawn sqft and also only 4 times a year. Everyday won't change a thing but empty your wallet.

If this weekend goes well, I'll have my soil test results, Miss Utility will have everything flagged and marked for safety, and I'll be renting a sod cutter and removing about the top inch of soil from may lawn, tilling the soil, then fixing the grade and leveling my lawn, putting down a starter fertilizer (and probably lime) and putting down Zenith Zoysia seed and hoping I get good results.

Does Milorganite require an immediate water in and any risk to pets entering the yard after treatment? Also curious about application timing when there's lots of heavy rain. Is it best to wait for a few days of clear weather to prevent it washing away? Here in Louisiana we've been getting rain a few times a week lately
@mwoodj7 жыл бұрын
Milorganite does not need to be watered in. Synthetics need to be watered in because the nitrogen is directly absorbed into the plant in the form of salts. If they are absorbed into the leaves they will burn. Milorganite feeds the soil. It does not hurt the grass for the milo to sit on it. If you are expecting a big rain shortly after applying milo it is actually best to not water it in because too much water can push the nutrients further down in the soil than you want. If you are not expecting a lot of rain watering the milo in can help to make it work faster. The bottom line with milo is that it's "goof proof". Water it in, don't water it in, use too much, use too little... it really doesn't matter. Just throw it down!

How soon after weed and feed can you do this application?
@GrassDaddy6 жыл бұрын
anytime, you could do it the same day - the only negative is having to mow a lot so space it out.

Thanks. Also, with Bermuda species, will it make it fill in and more importantly spread out faster? I prefer Bermuda and want to do anything to make it spread across our lawn faster(without having to overseed)

yes Bermuda can use extra nitrogen and it will spread faster

why are you putting so much down when it is only 5% nitrogen when other fertilizers have 32% nitrogen. using your settings on my 25000 Sq ft yard it takes 18 bags of milo @ $13.99 a bag for a total of $251.82 plus sales tax of $20.46 for a grand total of $272.28 where turf builder is 32% nitrogen and costs $33.99 a bag and I put 3 bags down for a cost of $101.97 plus sales tax of $8.29 for a total of $110.26. why would I spend more for less nitrogen? Help me understand the logic, more money for less nitrogen, what am I missing here?
@mooseknucklegarage84397 жыл бұрын
Robert Johnson more nitrogen is not always a good thing. Too much it burns your lawn up and turns yellow. Milogranite is only $7 a bag where I live and it's best used in the hot summer months so it doesn't burn the lawn

Aaron Siering I don't buy that. If you have to use milorganitie then what is your lawn then dependant on? Milorganitie 😂. With the exception that it'll never look or actually be as healthy as a lawn that also uses it in conjunction with synthetic fertslizer that has the same things that the plant and soil needs to actually give the plant its best chances. I mean I'm all for organic but the rest I find to be kinda tin foil territory. I rather spend less effort on better synthetic then have to do more work for less pay so to speak.

Good video but some states have fertilizer laws of how much fertilizer can be applied per app and season. Next will probably be laws what time of day or days you can cut your lawn. Dam Libs..I say put down what is needed to achieve the results you want to achieve.

Mr Efficiency yup I'm told when I can water.. even if I had one of those super efficient smart controllers it wouldnt matter because I can only water when they allow lol so the whole town waters whether it is needed or not when its their time.
@nicoandalysa6 жыл бұрын
Not “dam libs”, it’s because of idiots like this using way too much fertilizer. Too many morons abuse these things which in turn get them regulated, even in “red”states. Overuse of fertilizers can lead to it getting into the water tables and screws up ecosystems which kill fish and wildlife all because some dumbass wants to get some views on KZbin.
@nicoandalysa6 жыл бұрын
HomesliceDrummer nitrogen is nitrogen, too much of it not good your grass/plants, dumbass. And there is not just nitrogen in milo, there is also phosphorus, in high amounts can also be a problem, DUMBASS.
@nicoandalysa6 жыл бұрын
HomesliceDrummer bag rate is almost 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sqft. Just by doubling bag rate puts you at 2 pounds per 1k sqft. Putting down more nitrogen then the plant needs, even organic is stupid. It is not only wasteful but can cause other problems including the plant not being able to absorb other vital nutrients, excessive top growth, and leaching from the soil into waterways just cause it doesn’t burn doesn’t mean it’s ok to overuse DUMBASS
@ChrisJones19745 жыл бұрын
HomesliceDrummer the source of nitrogen doesn’t matter...nitrogen is nitrogen. Organic or synthetic in lakes and streams is bad news...

After...Milorganite is activated by water and it won't do much of anything until it is gently, but thoroughly watered-in. If you apply it heavily and then a hard rain comes along, a lot of it can be washed away.

This is great! You are and I are so alike when it comes to Milorganite. I put down 2-3 bags just on the front alone. My grass always looks like a golf course. I do this many times a month too. Unfortunately, everyone is discovering this product and it's hard to find in stock around here. Price wise, it's one of the cheaper organic fertilizers and better. We've also learned that the DEER do not like it after you put it down. However, it doesn't keep the deer away forever.
