The mind-body connection is powerful. When we have a strong emotion our body has a physical reaction, and emotions can seem trapped in our body when we have a chronic stress response. In this section, you’re going to learn how to improve your mental health by working with emotions in the body.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

@@graemegeorgeharrison2468 Hi Graeme, you've already taken the first step! Recognizing you have negative thoughts that are impacting your quality of life AND you're here! Mindfulness techniques can help you to dis-identify with your thoughts. Just because you have negative thoughts (and I'm pretty sure we all do) you don't have to believe them. Most of our negative beliefs were indoctrinated into us growing up. That's not to blame others, just to know where it stems from so you can forgive it and stop the cycle. Good luck in your self-development journey!

As someone who suffers from GAD from time to time, here are some tips that I use to deal with my illness: Strength training to relax my muscles. (Edit: And stretching thoroughly to keep tension from staying in the body) Running/jogging to calm myself, get stress out of the system and improve sleep. I go to sleep the same time every night at about 23:00 (11 P.M) and sleep for 7-8 hours. I don't use light screens a couple of hours before going to bed, and I never use my phone in the bedroom. I always use the last hour to unwind before bed. I drink decaff when I have coffee, especially later in the day. I never drink alcohol to deal with my emotions. But sometimes I go out for beer and fun with friends. If I feel anxious, but still want to go out with friends, I drink non-alcoholic beer. I seldomly eat junk food or processed foods, only like once a month (bad foods in excess trigger an anxious mood for me). I eat a plant based diet, and keep my omega3:s high by eating lots of flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts and an algae supplement 3 times a week. Complex carbs, plant proteins and unsaturated fats with additional fruits and veggies seem to do the trick for my mood. I meditate for about 20 minutes a day; sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the day. I make sure to surround myself with people that I can talk to about life, feelings and relationships. Most of my relationships are very meaningful to me, and gives me a lot of joy. I do all the above mentioned things because they make me feel good. Sometimes I am less strict, but that always comes back to bite me, so I accept that my life needs to be somewhat structured around a healthy lifestyle for me to feel my best.

Solutions shared in the video (start at 10:40, you have to learn to soothe your body because emotions act out physically): 1. Prioritise your sleep 2. Allow emotions to pass through your body rather than holding them up inside of you 3. Take a few long, steady, belly breaths 4. Focus on the area that feel tense and move it 5. Exercise 6. Nutrition 7. Yoga 8. Posture 9. Smiling 10. Progressive muscle relaxation

Six years ago I found out my mother had terminal cancer. A week after that shock, I learned that my husband had been having multiple affairs. After my mother passed away 10 months later, I learned I had breast cancer. Given the incredible stress, shock, and grief from that time period, I am not surprised that I got breast cancer. My holistic doctor asked me “who’s been blocking your femininity?“ It was an interesting journey exploring my emotions in order to understand my cancer better. There is definitely a connection between emotions and physical health.

This and music are my two main staples for warding off anxiety. Best to everyone dealing with this.

When my feelings of abandonment are triggered, my heart chakra hurts really, really badly. You speak of the evidence for emotional energy being stored in the body an not being researched/proven by scientific study at this point, but it is 100% true, and shows up as disease, in epigenetics and the energy body. Some day science will catch up.

It's really funny and how simple it is to just remove coffee/caffeine and see your anxiety almost disappear. You think " that's just too easy " but it's true!! You don't have to give it up forever but it is often the push that pushes our frazzled nerves over the edge. The whole psychological process of feeling needy and using a substance to change our shitty emotional state. Everything will get better folks just get out of the way and stay out of the way because the Lord is making everything in our lives better if we only trust and develop patience.

It wasn't until I managed to get some proper sleep, along with journaling (writing about what stressed me, in an effort to discharged the emotions surrounding the stresses, which helped me see they weren't as scary as I thought) and some deep breathing (Sit and focus on your breathing - breathe in to the count of three, and breathe out to the count of 5), then I learned to calm myself down. Smelling lemon balm or vanilla scent, cheeing gum or peppermint, sipping herbal tea, looking for three red/blue/green items, tapping or squeezing areas of the body/clenching and unclenching, listening to sad/soothing or lively music can alter the mood and release emotions. Body work and journaling have now been integrated into trauma treatment along with standard talk therapy.

I started doing hip flexor stretches about a year ago after the shoveling incident and my left hip/femur joint popped/released and a flood of emotion overwhelmed me and so much of the not just physical pain left me but mental and emotional too. It's like all that energy had been pent up so long and, finally releasing it, it had no other way to get out of me than to have an emotional breakdown. That was just the beginning, though. The weekend before Christmas last year, after all year of doing the stretching, my right hip released, then my left did right after. I slowly stood up and I felt my sacrum shift and about the next 5 or 6 vertebrae pop and shift into position and this time the flood of emotion made the first time seem tame. I bawled like I should have when my dad died and I couldn't let myself at the time. It was like a light switch that made clear just how much I had screwed up not just my last 20 years of life but probably the rest of it as well as my relationship with my son because of the metal state I had been in for so long that I wasn't the same person I used to be and thought in my mind I still was. I'll vouch 100% that emotions are stored in the body. Emotions, depression and mental clarity are absolutely conditions of the state of the body. It's very hard getting through writing this even now because the memory of that flood is still so very powerful. But I had to do this to not only validate what you're saying and encourage you to continue along that line of thinking about it to better help people like you are but to maybe help others through my testimony to do the work needed to get themselves better physically to be able to take care of yourself mentally and emotionally because it doesn't just affect yourself but so many other things and people around you that you have no idea it's taking a toll on. It's not worth losing half your life and most of your relationships like I did. It's like the rule of turbulent air travel that you have to put your own oxygen mask on to help yourself before you'll be any good at helping anyone else.

I really appreciate your videos, they are so helpful. I experience anxiety frequently and I notice that very often I also assume that I am an anxious person and also act on it like that, and I find that this actually makes my anxiety worse.

What I love about your videos and how they are very beneficial to me is, you don't use a lot of new age jargon and are direct yet kind. It's almost like you are able to login into my psyche and make changes. :) I was in a very bad place yesterday but I feel much better the more videos of yours I watch. Thank you.

My shoulders, I have a spot I call my stress button. I lose appetite, and eventually my back goes out and I have intense pain for a few days. Sleep problems, feeling worthless, hyper vigilant, a feeling of uncertainty and a repeat pattern about to play out. An intense anxiety to be blindsided and I am completely helpless. The physical pain is very real. When I recognize a familiar pattern that implies trauma cycle to repeat, I am right back to that moment and I physically feel the same intense shock & tense pain again, over & over. I can't escape

Emma, I will never be able to thank you enough, you are informative and the way you communicate advice is as if we have known each other for ages and you know exactly how I'm feeling, as well as myself exercising my body, I'm also beginning to exercise my mind, the food part will take some doing, but I'm getting there. I will continue to watch your videos and write down my thoughts in my journal, Emma once again Thank You.

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique kzbin.infoUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.
