The simplicity and clarity of this teaching by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche is breathtaking! In just a few words Venerable Geshe-la explains the nature and function of the mind in a way that truly enriches our meditation and daily practice. Given at the Fall Festival in Portugal in 2013, this precious teaching is something we should all take to heart.

In this video, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche discusses the nature and function of the mind in Buddhism. He explains that the mind is like space because it lacks shape and color, but it is not real space because space possesses shape and color. He emphasizes the difference between "empty" and "emptiness" in Buddhism, where emptiness is the real nature of things and realizing emptiness directly can free us from all sufferings.
Geshe-la also states that the function of the mind is to impute things and that things exist only because they are imputed by the mind. Without a name, things cannot exist. He quotes Buddha saying, "There is no phenomena other than mere imputation," which means that everything, including the world, is created by the mind.
Finally, he explains that the mind's main function is to perceive and understand objects. Seeing things and understanding objects are the function of the mind, and without it, we are powerless to do so. In conclusion, the nature and function of the mind are essential to understand correctly, as there is nothing more powerful than the mind.
