For me procrastination is associated with anxiety, the first form is when I have to do somethin but I can't start because I know it will be unpleasant time, so I keep delaying to avoid the bad feeling, how ever each time I delay the anxiety of not having started yet also rises and when it gets to the point in time closer to the deadline or when the second anxiety is "bigger" than the first, then I'll actually do the task

I’ve recently been asking myself, “Will I regret doing this, or will I regret not doing this?” when I encounter the kind of paralysis that can accompany my procrastination. May or may not be helpful depending on the activity/situation, but I’ve found it useful for things like going to the gym or practicing a skill or working on a project that I know will need to be completed at some point. I wrote that phrase on a sticky note on my desk and I find that sometimes it's the push/reminder that gets me doing whatever it is I've been avoiding!

Interesting! For me procrastination comes from defiance of the authority (school, lol) that is “forcing” me to do stuff I didn’t decide to do (It kinda has to do with c-ptsd and so this defiance is a defence-mechanism against what it thinks as a threat). I think what would help me is 1. Self-regulating and trying to see that teachers are not trying to hurt me and force a harmful thing on me (it’s just homework lol) 2. Realizing that I’m still in control of my decision and that I can choose to do the homework or not do it (and be responsible of the outcomes of that choice) 3. Trying to gain perspective on how doing the homework could be beneficial for me! How can I use it for my advantage. (Especially because I’m in 12th grade and whatever grade I’m getting could help me get into a good college!) (Edit: Wow. that’s a whole essay right there)

I can relate a lot to the guest speaker. I need a sense of urgency to get things done, and I have a long track record of meeting very tight deadlines which has made me ever more overconfident about my ability to get difficult things done very quickly. Sadly, while I'm procrastinating, I'm still stressing myself a lot about the things that I haven't yet done, and that stress isn't enough to get me to do them. It's a struggle because it makes me very reliant on external motivation, and my external sources of motivation are sometimes scarce (because I'm not really worried about not being able to pay my bills, or supporting a family, or my social reputation, which seem to help other people to get motivated).
@virtuosoengineer Жыл бұрын
Good one. The fear of failure is definitely an underlying sentiment. I think for me there's a sense of wanting things to be perfect and just never seeming to have the chunk of time that is best fit to start. Professionally, as a Software Engineer, there's also an endless backlog so the strategy of just doing it doesn't apply. In fact, the #1 way I find myself procrastinating is by doing other things that need to be done, but what maybe isn't the most critical in the moment. Would've been nice to see that bit more

Have you heard of "reclaiming your day?" Where people don't feel they own their work day and reclaim it by staying up late. This is why I procrastinate with work. I procrastinate on other things because I simply don't want to do them. For obligatory stuff like work, it's hard to feel empowered by or feel a sense of reward or accomplishment from these activities, especially if the tasks are repetitive and common. I usually willpower through them leading to frequent burnout and procrastination.

I just finished school, and I procrastinated A LOT. It was for the same reason as your husband. I only procrastinated with school, though, and some household chores. I dreaded doing textbook readings most, but I did okay getting through assignments. I love reading and can read quickly, too, but when it comes to uni, I just put that off until the last 3 hrs (2.5hr to read + .5 hours for the assignment). I also could crank out papers within a few hours with sources. It is just with reading. I want to go for a grad program, but I'm dreading going through that procrastination of reading since I know there's so much on top of the work. Maybe it comes from wanting to understand concepts perfectly (lots of rereading and meticulous notetaking). Anyway, I love the content, looking forward to the horror video, and I hope your honeymoon is special. 🌜✨️🎉

For my experience, I use to procrastinate a lot when I was growing up in my toxic environment since I was constantly in a flight or fight response. Once I've escaped, the procrastination left and could finally expand.

I am currently experiencing this. I live in a toxic environment and am stressed by things beyond my control, so I experience a lot of anxiety. When it comes to school, I push things off until the last minute or after the deadline has passed. Procrastination hurts my mental and physical health, but I keep doing it because I can’t bear to do the work in front of me.

As I listened to your husband I realize it's that we have different approaches. I think it's only a problem if someone gets super stressed about it, but for me I realize I just have my own timeline to things and like he state that sense of urgency helps me. I start something, allow the idea to marinate, and then that sense of urgency comes in to get it done. I'm sure sometimes there's deeper things to it, but it's also learning our own style and approach to things.

I have ADHD and I procrastinate a lot, and meds have helped me a lot. I know not everyone with ADHD likes being on meds but for me it's helped and I have hardly any side effects. So ending the stigma on meds for people who find it helpful would really help in my opinion. Other than that, one more thing I've been doing because I don't take meds daily and I'm a college student: I make a mental note that anything that is due on a weekday is actually due the weekend before. Suppose I have an assignment that is due on Wednesday, I'll note that I have to complete it by the Sunday before. Sometimes I even FORGET the actual deadline and complete it by the weekend before it or at least get most of it done by Monday. I don't even keep track of exact deadlines anymore, just a note on which ones I need to finish by the upcoming weekend, which is anything due next Monday-Friday. It's also less overwhelming than trying to remember exact deadlines of everything.

The reason for procrastination seems depenedent on the person. I think the most important thing is asking yourself why you're avoiding a task. Hearing other people's perspectives on why they procrastinate might give you ideas of why you might be procrastinating, but they won't all be true for you. It could be self esteem, it could be the need to add pressure. It could be that the pressure drives you to complete the task in less time so you have more time to do fun things before the task is due. Procrastination is very tricky and can't be simplified to just one thing. Maybe Ana is procrastinating relaxing by doing tasks.

This is true, we often over simplify procrastination and overlook that it might be cause by very different things

As a former perfectionist, for me, it was ABSOLUTELY about fear of failing AND fear of not being good enough. Why? Because my parents modeled for me that I need to be perfect in every way and was criticized if I was anything less than perfect.

The thing for me is that I found it hard to restart or rejoin an ongoing project. I'd rather get fully prepared and finish it using extremely long period of time even sleepless. Cuz I know deep in my heart if I stop I might never want to do this again. So I kept pushing myself doing it or not doing it at all. And yes Dr. Ana, like you said, I'm kinda afraid of what's coming after I finish it. Even though I know clearly finishing this project would benefit me extremely. I don't know where this kind of fear comes from.

The “normal” procrastinator husband and the productivity machine Ana Yudin. There could be deep aspects in the personality at play when one becomes a chronic procrastinator, maybe related to fear of success, self sabotage, an action of the Shadow in the Jungian sense, or a subconscious desire to treat the inner child well and a need to give ourselves some fun or rest that some aspect of ourselves needs to keep going. And sometimes as weird as it sounds, one needs external pressure (a boss or a deadline) to make us do the work if our motivation is low (the question then would be, why is our motivation so low?). The “wait for creativity to do its work” idea the Dr. mentioned here, doesn’t really seem to be the case of her husband, but it could be an explanation for herself - given than she is a writer and a video creator. (and by doing this, discussing this, I’m procrastinating some projects myself. So most definitely am speaking by experience 😢)

This is not an attack, I'm just trying to express fair criticism because I value your videos: I don't find it ethical that you pretend to talk about how you personally dealt with an issue that you actually never had while using this bait to promote a product related to this issue. I have adhd so procrastination goes a little further than just not wanting to do things sometimes. I'd love to be someone who starts early on a project so I won't have stress at the end. And I know it will never happen. I need the emergency deadline adrenaline to do stuff that I don't want to do at that moment. It's very stressfull for me and my body, but it seems to be the only way I actually do things. I wish timeblocking would work for me, no planner has ever saved me. The only thing that helps me is that I linked my school and work schedule in google calendar, so it updates automatically and I don't have to write stuff into it myself. It gives me a bit of structure when I need it without having me to be consistent with it (because I am lots of things but consistency isn't one of them).

I am not a procrastinator. Is it possible that procrastination is 'trained' into some people? By this I am referring to aggressors and abusers using 'delay' (control) as a technique. If they can create a delay, buy themselves some time, circumstances often change, become more difficult to report, easier for them to maintain the existing dynamic (which they are exploiting). = patterns of delay, procrastination.

Do you think it’s a mindset or this is just your natural personality? Like, a lot of people have heard “don’t do things last minute”, yet most people do even if they tell themselves they won’t waste last minute. So, it feels to me that “I’m gonna have this mindset” just won’t work for most people otherwise they would have already changed imo.
