The Mini Tool Briefcase

In this video we build a functional tool chest in the form of a mobile briefcase. This briefcase is equipped with a vise, work holds, sharpening tools, clamps, and everything you need to complete mini projects. I built this so I can woodwork while I am camping or on various trips.
UPDATE: I forgot to include in the video that I will be building a separate till for saws and the open space on the lid till is room for expansion. Veritas/Lee Valley come out with new mini tools every year and I know I will want more!

That was fun. I saw mistakes and problems that I have experienced and the project survived. I just dug out of the garbage can a failed project and reworked it. It came out great. Nothing wrong with repairs and reworking. Keep posting. Thanks for the fun.

That thing is AWESOME! It's almost as if you were influenced by all those shop tours...who'd of thunk? lol. As soon as I saw it, I thought of all those custom tool chests. Re your tail tearout: I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but something I just learned that I thought was cool...when a tree is felled, if the hinge doesn't cleanly break, it can pull fibers apart "way-up-in" (my term), making the tree of less value.

@@BatCaveCreations Making it worse would definitely be a bummer. Any chance it's an electric branding iron? Maybe fix into place (weight to 1 side) and turn it on? Or use a handheld wood burning "pen"; and give it a slightly different look? Kinda like a tattoo artist going over someone's bad decision.

@B.A.Bassangler that's what I'm thinking is to use a pen and burn the letters darker. I'm not sure setting it down and turning it ok would work. Always a chance it's off and idk how it would burn with the wood heating up with it. Maybe I'll try the pen and make it a video so if it works it's a good how to and if it fails its entertainment hahahah

I rarely watch a furniture building/woodworking video that doesn’t have me muttering the word “hack” and asking why a person that can’t complete a task proficiently is attempting to “teach” others how to do it or worse, sell plans for something they clearly aren’t capable of building correctly. This isn’t one of those videos. You made a project designed for hand tool use…. and you actually made it with hand tools. Not only that but you don’t look like a baby giraffe taking its first steps with a saw or plane in your hand. It’s an interesting project but more importantly you made it with artistic integrity which is something rarely seen in the era of KZbin content creation. Great job.

I sometimes struggle with "imposter syndrome" because I don't build perfect things or do things perfectly but i keep reminding myself that isnt how its done. Its is easy now and days to literally cut out mistakes and make everything look perfect and present like you are the best of the best but all that does is hurt the people who watch the videos. @@BatCaveCreationsknowing how to fix mistakes is what separates true craftsmen (and craftswomen) from handyman hacks. I was a career plumber and had to follow behind people and fix what they did incorrectly. An amateur and professional can perform the EXACT SAME job, but a professional gets paid; likewise a craftsman and a hack can start the same job, but the results from the craftsman will always be better (or the hack would be a craftsman). Craftsman take pride in their work.

That's the point I want people to get, if your doing it for fun and to relax, don't lose the joy by trying to be a perfect. Can you go back and fix mistakes sure but when I build for myself I usually don't care to and just have fun. If you are a full time woodworker, you better not let these mistakes slide by and expect to get paid well and keep a reputation hahahhahah

This is awesome! For magnets I like to use a red sharpie and blue sharpie to keep the poles straight. Just take a magnet, put a red dot on one side and a blue dot on the other side. Grab your next magnet, put a blue dot on the side that sticks to the red side of the first magnet, put a red dot on the side that sticks to the blue side of the first magnet. Repeat for all your magnets. Now, when it’s time to install, place all of your magnets in part A with the red side facing out. Then place all of your magnets in part B with the blue side facing out.

The few times I have used magnets, I have just stuck them together and glued one side down with both magnets there. When it’s time to attach the other side, I already have them oriented to put adhesive on the outside of the pair(opposite poles attached) and close the lid/door on top of the magnet sandwich. I have misaligned them, but always kept polarity correct

Very clever using the inside as the bench top! I've had a concept for a briefcase style traveling tool case banging around my noggin for a year but got hung up on work holding and bench top. Seeing your solution gets me over that obstacle. Nice work.

Utterly lovely work and great inventiveness 🙂 Really good to someone else accepting the imperfections and working with them. I'm thinking about building a tool cabinet that can be moved as my workshop is cold and damp in winter so this is good instruction...thanks. One thing I would have done differently? Although they look good on top I would have put the 'doves' on the side to take advantage of the mechanical fixing when holding it by the handle. That way gravity won't work the dovetails loose whilst carrying. Those tools may be small but I'm sure it's not light. Thanks again for a brilliant video. Subscribed...more please! 😉

when chiseling out the waste for dovetails you want to slowly work both sides of the board removing material slowly. Paul Sellers has a good video on dovetails where he uses a chisel for the waste removal

I think this project is wonderful! Just wonderful. Thank you for acknowledging your "mistakes" too; love to see how you correct them. Just a suggestion: weigh the finished project (ideally without hardware) and the garbage bag full of sawdust and shavings. That would be an interesting ratio!

I didn't make any plans for it. I'm not a big fan of making plans because the builder typically has to modify them to their own tools and the materials they want to use, esp for this build. So give it a go, draw it out on paper and go for it! Most of all, have fun!!! God Bless and thank you!!

I'm not a woodworker but I do have some hand saws and planes. I use them for when I get stressed/depressed. I just go grab a lump of wood (normally 2x4 offcuts) and a plane and get stuck into making shavings. The action of just going back and forth, stopping every now and then to sharpen, just seems able to grab my worries/fears and throw them out the door.

Yes!!! I do that alot. I plane a board. When I'm upset in anyway, I grab the plane I know is ready to go and just plane a board. That is a coping skill and that is one of the things that lead to the founding of Plane Wellness. Realizing how much that helped and how much peace woodworking in general gives me. You need some kind of hand saw. If you can't fit anything else in you might consider a blade holder for saws-all blades.

Ya I have a mini cross cut saw. I'm adding a mini gents saw soon and I'm going to try and make a mini rip saw. I will be building a seperate till that attaches to the outside of the case :D

Beautifully done! I could really use your help with my dovetails. I've managed to complete two dovetail joints using my Veritas saw, but each time the pins don't line up perfectly with the tails. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Should the saw be beveled when cutting the pins (like the tails are 1:7) or should it be "mitred"? Will this improve with more practice? 🤔 I hope this makes sense 😂

Thank you!!! I'm not the best at dovetails but when you cut the pins the saw should be straight not diagonal like the tails. Dovetails deff take practice. Keep at it you will get there!!!

What an amazing project! I have questions! 1. How heavy is the toolbox when fully loaded? (I get it’ll be a bit heavier once you add the saws/tills 2. How ergonomic are the mini tools, especially the chisels? It seems like they would be super awkward to use.

Thank you!! Great questions!! 1. I haven't weighed the chest yet but maybe 15lbs it doesn't feel heavy at all 2. Most of them are relatively comfortable to use. I will say that none of then are comfortable after long use. For example, I wouldn't use the hand planes to take a board from rough to smooth lol and I deff wouldn't use them on like lignum or ipe. I plan on mostly building things outta pine, maple, basswood. I also use the chisels, shoulder plane, and mini router on big projects alot but not for heavy use. Mostly clean up I hope that helps!!

Awesome build. Did you get your minuture planes and chisels from Lee Valley? I use a fish tail chisel to clean out the inside side of my dovetails. My rationale for buying a blue spruce chisel. My dovetails will make Rob Cosman cry but to me they are good enough for me and my projects

I was debating on a fishtail chisel. Never tried one. Is it annoying to sharpen? Rob Cosman would also cry looking at my dovetails hahaha

Love this project! One question not about this: I know you bought a good full size bench. What kind is it, and how much was it?

I bought the Rockler Medium Tool bench when it was on sale for I think $450 but... I do NOT recommend this bench. The top is held on by 4 screws and it racks something fierce. So I need to put a lot of work into it. Ive had it a few years now and just haven't found the time to make it stronger. I do have a cabinet system underneath that helped a bit but not by much. and now the top is only held on by 2 screws cus the others fell out. Really, the bench just needs a massive overhaul. I got a different one a friend found me at an estate sale, I believe it was an old Walmart brand or harbor freight brand or something, use to cost like $200 and it is way more stable than the Rockler bench. If you have to buy vs build for whatever reason, just know that you will have to still put work into beefing it up or if you can bolt it to the wall and the floor and you'll be good :D (Id do that if it wasn't for needing to record hahaha Sorry for the rant :D

It racks really bad, I haven't tried to fix it, but looking at it doesn't have a good place to put angled trusses. the one I really want is a Lie-Nielsen, but with shipping and tax it would cost $4500. Next in line is the Highlands Woodworking shipping and tax is $3000+. then another smaller HW is $2800 w/tax and shipping, Maybe when I payoff my SawStop, I'll be able to get either of the HW. I'm getting pretty old(82) to be buying such expensive tools, so says my wife of 63 years.Yep, been married 63 years!

I haven't been able to try any of those but I'm gonna assume for the price they would be good! I have been debating on the Grizley one with big metal legs. I know we are woodworkers and everything should be wood but I like that the legs are adjustable for my unlevel floors. And we can still add a wood cabinet under. It's just under 1k with shipping I think. That may be an option also?

I just looked at the Grizzly benches. The one I would get is the T34091 - 80" 9-Drawer Euro-Style Butcher Block Workbench. It’s on sale for $814.50 until 10/21. But even without the sale it’s $905. Either way its $199 freight. Looks like a really good one.

I really like what you have done with this build. You inspired me to make a chest like yours. Would you please give me the length and width of the work bench surface. I have gotten a number of the Veritas mini tools as gifts over the years. Also, when you get your saw till done, please show it off. BTW mistakes are just a part of life. I drilled from the top using a forstnerbit and underneath the workpiece i have a scrap board. They aren't perfect I think 2 or 3 have some tearout on the top tlnut thags worked well for me through the years

Super cool build! Any tips on how to resaw with a hand saw without drifting off the line?

Thank you!!! What I do is cut in a triangle ish motion. Handle down, sawing up to follow the line. Then move the handle level and saw flat to saw down a bit then tilt the handle back down, sawing up again to follow the line. Once that is well established I will tilt the handle up and saw down, then level out, then tilt the handle down to saw up, then level out, so on till I am done. This has worked for me, idk if it is the best or not but that's what I do hahaha
