The MinuteMen March to OLD NORTH BRIDGE... WHAT HAPPENED NEXT 💥 April 19, 1775

Walk with me on the same road that the American minutemen took on April 19, 1775, on their march to the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. At the North Bridge, the Americans confronted the British troops guarding the bridge and some of the very first shots of the American Revolution were fired, and helped to kick off the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Here at North Bridge, American troops were ordered to fire on the British for the first time in history, and the the first American officer to die in the American Revolution, Capt. Isaac Davis of Acton, fell in the brief engagement at the bridge.

Hi everybody, I made a mistake at 14:11 by saying Capt. Isaac Davis was the first American officer to be KIA in the American Revolution - it was pointed out to me that Ensign Robert Munroe of Lexington was the first. He was killed on Lexington Green earlier on the morning of April 19, 1775. I wanted to acknowledge it. Mea culpa. - KTG ☘

I have walked over the bridge a number of times and stand there for awhile and look around in amazement thinking it all started here. I never get tired it. I try to put myself back at that time and try to imagine what it was like.

For me this is a special place, the Old North Bridge. I lived in Concord years ago and would dearly love to live there again (alas, the prices of the homes...). There was a 15 inch snowstorm one night (about 1982) and after it had stopped and the stars and moon came out, I went out into what was a magical night and walked down to the old North Bridge where I stood alone on it in the quiet and the beauty. It was a night I'll never forget. The history of the town, both the revolutionary war history, and literary history is special. I go back there whenever I can. Thanks Katie for your passion. Take an Appleseed. Bring the kids. It is history of this battle, and this is the most critical moment of this battle. It is rifle marksmanship training combined with history. "When Marksmanship Met History". As a beginner you learn to shoot a .22 and shoot it very well. It is the best introductory course anywhere, and the best "natural point of aim" training I have ever had. And if you thought you knew about the history of the battles of Lexington and Concord...

I have ancestors who were in the Andover militia and heard the alarm but didn't make it in time to fight on 4/19 but camped out in Cambridge until they went to Bunker Hill.

Katie; it is important to note that there were far fewer trees around Concord in 1775. This meant that the vistas and views were far more expansive. The obstacles to seeing the opposing forces were rises in the terrain, hedge rows, and the occasional house/barn. This meant that the Regulars could see the Militia gathering from a great distance. By the time the Raiding Expedition was returning to Boston they could see the entire horizon teeming with minutemen arriving in groups of dozens and scores. Say what one will about the British; the discipline of maintaining order in their retreating column was great when everyone of them could see the teeming hornets nest they had stirred against them.

Katie, I am well familiar with the muster field. Concord hosts a 4th of July five-mile race or at least they used to. It starts from the center of town, you cross the Old North Bridge from the side that the Regulars would have been defending, and you head up the path that you were standing on towards where the Colonials mustered. It then loops back into town. I remember how cool it was as more than 100 of us thundered over the bridge imagining the monumental struggle that had occurred there. The problem was it was in the 90s that day and high humidity. By the time I got to the top of the muster field I was hating Concord probably as much as the British did. Love your content and accent. 🙂

For local folks, I remember the times some nuts tried to blow up the bridge. I only saw a chunk blown out but I loved growing up in Concord. We played there all the time.

Exelent presentation but you missed one point that caused the troops to be here and the battle to take place here. The reason the Minutemen formed north of the North Bridge was to keep the British column from getting to the Barrett farm where the munitions the British were looking for was hidden. This bridge was needed to get the main column to Barrett's farm. Thank you again for doing these. As stated by a few of you viewers, many of us who grew up in the Concord area never learned the full history of what took place here when we were in school.
