Watch out, one and all. And I don’t mean because it’s a Crash video that isn’t on Bandicoot Month. Caddicarus has returned after 1 month of absence - and he’s bigger than ever. The video, I mean. Towering at nearly 90 minutes, basically feature-length, Caddy now brings you his in-depth Crash Bandicoot 4 review. After the meddling Wrath of Cortex, Crash went on a massive downward spiral, eventually ending in the boring Crash of the Titans and Crash Mind Over Mutant. But now he’s back, with a true spiritual sequel to Crash Bandicoot 3 or Crash Bandicoot Warped - Crash 4! Crash Bandicoot 4 It’s About Time is a fantastic game, make no mistake. BUT….completing Crash 4 has proven to be an exercise of pure unbridled misery. Watch in horror as Caddy dives deeper than he ever has with his Crash Bandicoot 4 critique and the arduous journey the 106 percent completion is. Luckily we’re at least using the PS4 Pro for a crazily beautiful game, which I was expecting after seeing the visuals in the Crash 4 trailer. The Crash Bandicoot 4 trailer may have got me excited, the announcement of which I ended up streaming for over 2 hours in a giant analysis of every frame, but going into making this video for the Crash 4 review was something else entirely. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a Crash Bandicoot 4 guide or Crash Bandicoot 4 walkthrough for some of the hidden boxes and n sanely perfect relics - and I also can’t give you many hints on getting the Crash 4 platinum relics from the Crash 4 time trials. As for the Toys for Bob time trial dev times, or the time trial purple relics - I’M NEVER DOING THEM EVER, SO DON’T ASK MEEEEEEEE. The footage you’ll be seeing in this Crash Bandicoot 4 It’s About Time review was all captured from a PS4 Pro at 60fps, and Crash Bandicoot 4 PS4 is definitely the way I’d recommend playing it. I haven’t seen it running on Xbox One, but if anything, I’m more surprised Crash 4 PS4 is the best way to play this, considering the N Sane Trilogy PS4 was locked at 30fps. A Crash Bandicoot PS4 remake isn’t as smooth as a brand new Crash Bandicoot 4, that isn’t Wrath of Cortex. Weird. Either way - Crash seems to have found his groove finally, even if it was at the tail-end of the PS4 lifecycle. Now, I’d absolutely LOVE to see Crash Team Racing Nitro Fuelled PC, Crash Bandicoot 4 PC (or Crash Bandicoot 4 Switch), and maybe even a PS5 remake or Crash Bandicoot PS5 remake of Crash Twinsanity? Crash Twinsanity Remake, anyone? Crash Twinsanity 2? Who knows. Either way, I think the days of Bad Crash Bandicoot Games are behind us.

Fun fact, the current World Record for 106% in this game, is 7 hours and 16 minutes. Of that, 29 minutes was just the different loading screens. 30 minutes of 7 hours 15 minutes, was just this game loading. Caddy probably spent closer to 5 hours of his 68 hour save file, just loading!

The way you switch from 29 to 30 minutes, and from 7 h 16 min to 7 h 15 min was a bit confusing. But if you're curious, 29 min of 7 h 16 min is 6,65%. Caddy playing for 68 h 29 min, that is estimated 4 h 33 min of just loading. But we can assume the number is higher, because the record would of course be of someone playing nearly perfectly, and not or barely restarting. While Caddy has been restarting the game a lot.

My boss has a big interest in game development. While I was telling him about Crash 4, he said that it sounded like a game that needed to do a better job at giving the player smaller rewards over the course of the game rather than forcing them to go all or nothing for completion. It was then that I realized that you easily fix this whole entire game with just one simple change: Instead of requiring you to get all six gems in a stage, make it so that you simply get a new skin for every six gems you collect throughout the game.

Honestly, it nearly borders bad or trollish game design (and in some cases just straight up crosses that line), I look at these and I'm flabbergasted. These are Donkey Kong Country 1 Bonus Barrels levels of cryptic, and these were only hard to find because the code to make Cranky give you the tips for them was messed up, and locked to the World 1 tips!

@@zjzr08 I would rather keep them in the future, then playing a level, playing the alternate character version, then replaying the main stages after the alternate character ones.¨ It's fun how a change in visuals and a minor gameplay tweak can screw with you. Sure it's not equally fun in all variations, but as someone who didn't try to 100% just the extra gems for unlocking skins, great. Of course later on, you need more and more, which weights that down a bit.

I didn't want to believe you. I had wanted a new proper Crash game for nearly 10 years and honestly, I let that blind me. I didn't want to see any criticism thrown towards Crash for fear of never seeing him again. But, then I got it. I sat down and decided to go for completion. As much as I love the Crash games, for as much as I'd hate to see him disappear again... holy hell this is agony. I have carpel tunnels and I have never played a game that has put me in as much physical pain as I am in right now. This is ridiculous padding on top of borderline unfair level design. No one, and I mean NO ONE wanted a harder version of Crash 1 with more cryptic secrets than Crash 2 and 8× the collectables as Crash 3 all combined into 1 game. I know there are people out there that like a good balls to the wall difficulty in games, and maybe after years of licensed stuff Toys for Bob wanted to really flex their dev skills, but dammit why'd Crash have to be the face they slap on a game like that?

Playing again the Crash games and revisiting the people who worked on those games, is clearly that none of the devs, included TFB understanded Naughty Dog original vision. The only one that came close to it was Vicarious Visions and i feel that was to the extreme (as much as i like their Crash games). All of the Naughty Dog games to be honest were always.... pretty accessible, like is incredible how accessible the Crash trilogy is for 90s standards, and it is clear that modern Naughty Dog still wants to find new revolutionary ways to make their games accessible. Crash 4 is the oppossite of being a "fun little ride". The NST was harder than the originals and Crash was meet as a "Dark Souls style game" just because of arbitrary things such as the hitboxes or physics being worse than the originals. I still think the PS1 games are superior in terms of graphics even to the PS4 entries due to the inspiration to classic movies they had, while the newer entries is like any animated cliche movie of these days and it gives me a lot of cringe. If we can count it, Jak And Daxter The Precursor Legacy is exactly what Crash 4 should had been. Even though is not linear, is what Naughty Dog wanted Crash Bandicoot to be assuming they still had the franchise.

As someone who 100% finished Sunshine, that was a walk in the park compared to what 100% completing this will be. I had to watch a video for the blue coins but it wasn't that bad, and the only really bad parts are the Pachinko machine and the mudslide (which I only traveled to once or twice I believe when I missed stuff, after the second time if I missed something I just carefully walked back up using the sides of the slide).

I would have atleast attempted it if the N-sanely perfect relics weren't required for 106%. That feature is the most cruel and unfair thing I have ever seen in a video game and that comes from me who platimumed N.Sane Trilogy, CTR, Dark souls 3 and Bloodborne (nothing to brag about I'm trying to say that I love difficult games). Even thinking about attempting it in animal riding levels and the last 6 levels especially Cortex Castle, gives me a headache.

I nearly broke my controller trying to collect all the boxes because I was thinking to myself that I will eventually need to collect all the gems for the true ending (which yes is true), but now that I’m aware of the second true ending and it’s requirement for getting it, I’m officially done with Crash 4! Once I get all of the gems and get the first true ending, that’s it for me chief cause flip the second ending, flip the number of hidden boxes in each level, and flip this game.....but at the same time, I can’t hate this game for how good it looks, feels, and plays so instead, FLIP “TOYS FOR BOB!”

In an interview with Paul Yan, a developer of Crash 4, Lou Studdart, talked about how the people at Toys For Bob were worried about fans thinking the game was too easy. Good lord, I am horrified at the idea of what they would think the game being too hard is. The interview also talked about how the hidden boxes and inverted mode were introduced because they wanted the game to last longer and have more replayability. And while I get where they're coming from, they went way too overboard with it in this game.

This is why I will still always appreciate the original trilogy. It's the simplicity of the original trilogy compared to this game that makes it still worth going back to. I still love Cash Banooca 4, but I'll always go back to the trilogy for a more simpler experience.

If they made the 5 gems (not the hidden gem) being shared between normal and n.verted, like how the perfect relic is shared between the two, that would reduce the annoyance. Then you can choose which form you want to do the 5 gems in, and you're only required to locate the hidden gem in the n.verted form.

1:03:23 The thing here is, when you do a normal death restart, it only resets the objects that it needs to - things like enemies, for example, but not boxes and other collectibles. You could, in theory, encounter a glitch where some object necessary for progression doesn't get respawned. Restarting manually from the menu forces a full reload in order to reset *everything*, just in case there's some inconsistent/corrupt game state somewhere.
