That inner o-ring will stop unfiltered fuel from passing through those threads. Quite common to have some kind of seal on the inner pipe on those type of fuels filters. Your fuel tank is obviously fairly clean - seeing that you have had no issues. Glad you spotted the issue though, you never know when your going to get a bad tank of diesel from somewhere.
@jamesrossmotors8 жыл бұрын
Awesome that you shared this. We all keep learning and thats the beauty of your channels. Seems to be many myths about that o ring so i hope to clear it up. Air is not a problem. The problem only arrises when the fuel filter has done its job over time and starts to become restricted. That is when fuel will take the easiest route and bypass the threads and the ugly part is that it will mix with dirty fuel that is in the filter. Thats when your injectors start to take a beating. Hope this makes sense to everyone. A quick note. All spin on filters will bypass fuel and oil via the threads when they become restricted. Cummins realised this many years ago and surprisingly other manufacturers have not followed suit. The answer is to change your filters when they are due.
@travisoliver63492 жыл бұрын
i run heavy equipment and on the Cummins, i used several filter changes no problems, then one time my machine would stall intermittently, someone mentioned the inner oring so i installed it, no more problem, must have been drawing air, now i always use it.

Whew, I am so relieved that you went back and installed that O ring, now I can sleep tonight. All joking aside I have worked on Detroit Diesels since the 1970s and never saw an O ring like that on their fuel filters. I started a job two years ago working on buses with Cummins engines and saw that O ring on their fuel filters.

My experience is with much smaller car engines. I never put that o-ring on because sometimes it prevents the outer one from sealing properly and lets air enter the system; never had an issue and bear in mind that we have extremely low quality and dirty diesel down here in south America.
@vegasfordguy8 жыл бұрын
At least you showed what really happened and showed the correct way to do it. As a few others have stated, keeping the fuel CLEAN is super important on a diesel as injectors are very expensive and a small particle of dirt is all it takes. ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS!
@viz_aviz91898 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul greetings from UK. I think nearly all our spin on fuel filters have a seal in the middle (example ESR4686 ) But ours are fitted in a slot the same as the outer seal.The reason they say don't fill filter is you are pouring in unfiltered diesel which can have micro particles in which score the fine tolerances in the pump and injectors and ruin your day and wallet. the modern pumps piezo injectors running at 8000+psi are even more critical as micron particles at them pressures act like a sand blaster that blast away all needle injectors and nozzles in no time at all which will ruin your day and wallet big time.Hope this helps Tim
@Travisfromoregon8 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, I work for a Cummins, Cat, International Dealer. The quad ring is for sealing filtered vs unfiltered fuel. On another note on some of these motors cycling the key on will run the lift pump, on others you will need to bump the starter motor with the key and the ecm will run the liftpump. So if you run into another medium or heavy duty engine and are testing a lift pump make sure to bump the key.

Danner its so cool to see your hands dirty. But anyway the fuel comes down the centre of the threaded part, in to the filter, through the filter paper inside the canister then out the holes in the rim of the filter to the fuel rail. So if you haven't got the O ring in place then fuel can come back up the threads and mix unfiltered fuel with the clean filtered fuel leaving the filter housing.The O ring has to seal the top of the canister to the roof of the filter housing, No need to be tight because it squashes and expands. Its such a small amount its hardly worth worrying about, and most after market filters wont have the extra seal supplied, But genuine always is best quality and go the extra mile. Good on you Danner. Getting it done and doing it right .

Heyyy Paul, even though I have seen the O-ring groove in the first video and I was shouting out there, but I can't blame you while for not recognizing it. I can't because I was behind the screen and you were are filming, wrenching, talking, and in laying in positions that is hard to see the groove. Also, the maintenance manual say nothing about it as well as the printed instructions on the filter it self. So, do not go hard on yourself, you didn't loose your mechanic touches even though you are working on electrical systems and diagnosis more often lately. I believe every one makes mistakes once in a while, but not a lot admit it, not to mention posting it on the web to. So, great job and I appreciate your honesty. THUMBS UP.

Paul that oring just seals between the filtered non filtered side of fuel filter. I have seen lots of people not use it, but it should have it
@TheWrench978 жыл бұрын
Working in a fleet shop for 30+ years I've seen a lot of cumins filters come off missing the inner seal It is there it prevent the filtered fuel from mixing with the unfiltered fuel, when the filter is tightened it squeezes between the top of the filter and the filter housing to seal, if you have good clean fuel and clean tanks no harm no foul. They warn against pre-filling because most do not pre-fill with filtered fuel or some pour the dirty fuel out of the old filter into the new filter small bites 4 micro in size can past through the pump and damage a injector.
@ScannerDanner8 жыл бұрын
That's crazy! How does the injector get damaged? Restricted I could see but damaged? As in needs replaced? I have to study up on my diesel injectors!
@TheWrench978 жыл бұрын
small particles in very close tolerance moving parts cause the plunger to seize or the nozzle to plug up or in a worst case blow the tip off into the piston. Depending on the year it's either a common rail system with electronic injectors , which like the newer Fords use engine oil pressure to develop injection pressure or the older Bosh pump with 6 lines coming off one to each injector the bosh system will get to 2500+ psi at the injector tip the common rail set up closer to 4000 psi
@lucianlucian99118 жыл бұрын
You are correct Paul, but in addition to the fact that they get restricted, dirt could damage the entire injection system as the fuel also plays the role of lubricant of high pressure pump and injectors (of course lines and common rails too, depending on case). At least that's the way I see it.
@trainer20188 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul that small round O ring is important. The fuel goes into the small holes around the big hole, goes down the filter, goes through the element, then back up to the top. If you don't have the o ring as others have mentioned the fuel will the filter and it will also cause a air gap which will make it suck air and cause cavitation. Not good for a caps pump. Do you know how old the injection pump is? If it has some age to it let me know and I can show you how to do some checks on it to make sure it is ok so you don't get stranded someday.

Where I work we maintain 9 forklifts with that engine. I have personally serviced a couple where that seal was forgotten the last time it was serviced with no apparent ill effects. I know it serves a purpose, and I always thought it was to keep unfiltered fuel from the injectors, but it may be a very small quantity. I don't know. Maybe Busjockey could chime in? He's awesome on these engines.

As a guy who works on Cummins engines every day, I knew exactly what that o-ring was. The tune is different on an isc vs an isl. That inner o-ring separates filtered fuel from un-filtered fuel, the outer seal keeps it from leaking. In an H.D application the demand for fuel is higher. And if the commanded fuel is to far from measured fuel. You will have your self a big ol headache.
@tjsean03088 жыл бұрын
Very important oring. Stops the filter from bypassing particles through the threads that could be above the filter size. Its loose on the shaft so the oring will self center and seal on the body of the filter. Source: Cummins certified tech.

What a beautiful sound out of that Cummins! Bet the exhaust still smells good too, since there's no emission crap clogging up the works. Can always tell when you're following a modern diesel - they smell funny, and it's not pleasant. The old ones always smelled great, IMO ... guess it's a "mechanic" thing. :D Nice save on the o-ring. I doubt anything bad will happen from that, since the diesel fuel these days has to be 100% PURE ultra-low sulfur, or these modern diesels will melt down, thanks again to the aforementioned emission crap. Anything pre- EGR & DPF will be fine. Can even run used motor oil mixed with unleaded at a 5.5:1 ratio - maybe not in your motor home, but the mid 90's and back would handle it. That's REAL recycling. :D

ScannerDanner, I seen have seen alot of flat towed vehicles tear the rear of their aluminum tailshaft housing off because of lack of lubrication, if that makes any sense. Once the system is purged of air, there shouldn't be any air in there to sneak by the threads. My best guess is that it prevents unfiltered fuel from bypassing the filter element. Diesel fuel is significantly less viscous than oil, so it would be more likely to wick its way between the threads, even if it were in very small amounts. :)

Yes the O-ring gos to the middel. Never sean one missing so i ges if i didnt service allso disel cars i would have missed it as last worker droped it on starter or some thing. I dont know but. I quess ass it needs to filter thinner fluid then oil. It needs that O-ring to make sure non filtered fuel cant pass through... And that H20 drain port is for "winter service" (Before Freezing times) on any diesel car. So you can make sure your car can start in winter. That is if you didnt get water in your dieseltank on last fuel up and that the diesel is rated for winter use...

There would be another filter at or in the injection pump that would be capable of catching anything that passes through the threads. Feels better to do as the engineer wanted. I can't imagine that thing ever seeing dirty fuel.
