They could at least wait until the monster were close to kill themselves, but hearing them was enough. Just 5 more minutes and they would all be save. Plus, it really hits home that they messed up in the end that they could all probably survive if they weren't so scared and more selfless if they had helped that lady right at the beginning - she survived and found her kids, and they also survived. King did think of it, though. In the novella, when they escape the supermarket, the main character thinks: "I checked the gun and then put it into the glove compartment. Ollie had reloaded it after the expedition to the drugstore. The rest of the shells had disappeared with him, but that was all right. He had fired at Mrs. Carmody, he had fired once at the clawed thing, and the gun had discharged once when it hit the ground. There were four of us in the Scout, but if push came right down to shove, I'd find some other way out for myself."

If only Frank Darabont was able to keep working on The Walking Dead. He knows horror and despair really well. For those of you who don't know, he directed this movie and seasons 1-2 of TWD. The soldier who was murdered in the movie, Sam Witwer (also the voice of Darth Maul/Starkiller), was close with him and spoke in an interview about how AMC screwed him over and basically fired him from TWD.

If I remember correctly Sam Witwer was also the zombie soldier inside the tank in the first episode of TWD, there was originally going to be a spinoff miniseries about him.

This is one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite endings (I do consider it better than the novella, which had a solid ending). If you’re able to get it on DVD, watch it in black and white. If you ask me, that’s the definitive way to watch it. Plus it also makes a lot of the earlier CGI look much better than in color.

@Tyrantofthewind3 жыл бұрын
@@niggardlylad2008 I don't think it is nihilistic at all. It is absolutely tragic. The man was operating with the information he had and made a decision that was reasonable in the face of overwhelming horror and it turns out that decision was completely unnecessary. He had no way of knowing that the Mist would just "pass on" and that the military would be able to easily dispose of the remnants left behind.

It was stupid. Welp. Fought all this way but we're out of gas now, so let's eat some bullets... Spend the night. Talk it over. Or, make me feel it's warranted and have a ton of bugs flying around, making the car rock, then decide to do it. Jane then come out of the truck and await for the swarm to take him but they don't, as they are flying past him to get away from the army that was forcing the bugs to flee. That to me would have been a tragic ending and better one, IMO.

THat is the reason why many people didn't like the ending. Because it is that one most horrific thing to live through and it just doesn't fit into their life agenda. Even if being in a situation like that. I can understand why many hate it. That is the reason why I love it. Because Horror is not the monsters it's the people and the fear we have... Nothing beats some good old school 101 psychology.
@ProxyDoug3 жыл бұрын
At first I didn't like it not because it's sad, but because it was kind of staged and rather predictable, because it always felt like the Mist would only subside once he killed everyone. Also, you get this situation that is very well defined along with a punchline, but there's no creativity from the characters when the Mist itself, as an environment, is sort of like a new frontier outside of the events of the mall which worked sort of like Plato's Cave situation where you were cut off from the real world, but also given a limited view from it. To sum it up, you don't actually know the odds of surviving in it, if this film was to be seen that way. That said, today I appreciate the cosmic horror aspect of it and the idea that, in the same way the Mist exaggerated the fanaticism on the people in the mall, it drove Dave to believe that, that was his best option and that it was a burden he had to carry, which makes me believe that if they waited for a week on that car, the Mist would only subside once he was the only one left.

The Mist shook me to my core, really stuck with me back then. I recommend the B&W version tho, really gives you that Night of the Living Dead vibe. I read somewhere that Darabont always wanted to make The Mist, and that is the opposite of The Shawshank Redemption, Shawshank is about keep keeping hope, and never giving up no matter what, The Mist is the opposite, what happens after you lose hope. That's when I realized that the ending was absolutely necessary for the rest of the movie to work. It's a total gut punch.

The greatest success of this movie to me (outside of the ending) is that the biggest horror elements were ultimately the people, and what they were capable of. The creatures are more of a set-up: definitely freaky, but how the people reacted to the situation was scarier because THAT felt INCREDIBLY plausible. Overall great film.
