Klay Thompson still looks very good physically, even after his injuries. I think the problem is his mental game. In his prime, Klay took shots with confidence even if he was cold, because he always believed the next shot was going in. Now, you can see he just doesn’t have that same belief in himself anymore. He’s spent the last few seasons trying to prove that he’s still the same guy, and he ends up forcing tough shots, getting upset with himself, then missing easy shots, and it just seems to spiral from there. I feel for him bc he still clearly has the skills to be a productive piece on a winning team. Hopefully the change in scenery will help him reignite that fire.

Our defense was NOT a concern in the finals run this last season. The Mavs held each team they faced in last year's playoffs to well under their season average. Our offense and lack of shooting/poor decision making from role players is what really held us down in the finals, I have NO idea where you got the idea that our defense was the main issue for the Mavs cause it is clear as day that it was our offense🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

Add to that Poole becoming a bum and us trading for CP3 for GOD knows why, and it was inevitable that we would miss the playoffs.

Basketball is a complicated sport. One small change causes ripple effects through your offense and defense. All through the playoffs teams tried to take away either Luka or Kyrie until the finals when they tried to take away the corner threes and live with the numbers Luka could produce while injured. they got lucky that Kyrie had a bad series despite mostly being played one on one and as they expected, the Mavericks role players couldn’t hit jack shit without the corner three available. It’s snowballed into the entire offense bogging down. So now you get Thompson as a shooter and passer along with Luka and Kyrie and suddenly the clippers, OKC, and the wolves can’t take away anything because if they double they leave an outstanding scorer wide open. That means the lobs are back, the corner threes are back, and you’re not only going to see more scoring from those guys, but more efficient scoring which is going to improve Dallas’ point totals and helps their defense because of less fast breaks on missed shots. Literally everything on offense and defense gets better whether Thompson gives you 15 PPG or 25 .

Just the fact that Klay will now shoot those open 3s that THJ bricked is already a win for Dallas. Even if Klay is not the same Klay his name alone will still put fear on the other team, still can't leave him open. With Luka and Kai's gravity he will shoot mostly wide open and average 40% shooting 3s. And i think he will be better defensively because of DLive and Gafford, not all team defensive Klay but just a better version last season.

Before adding PJ and Gaff, people were doubting the mavs because of Luka and Kyrie backcourt. Well they played great defense, in the playoffs until finals. Meaning adding klay won't hurt them so much. But they negated that move by again adding more. And before people overreact, not every team they face is the celtics. Atp if there are no significant injuries, I only expect them to get challenged by OKC and Celtics. So yes, don't overthink this move. Mavs will be just fine, barring any injuries

@@jadynhasstupid2275 yeah I maf'd incorrectly lol. But yeah Klay also said it wasn't about the money, but clearly it was. And if the Tax thing is truly a big factor, then it's only fair that heavily state tax teams get a higher cap, imo. Because in order for Klay to receive the equivalent of 17m/year in Texas compared to CA, it would be like 34m-ish/year. And like Orlando giving Wagner that 5 year extension for 224m... Florida also doesn't have state tax... What do you think that kind of contract would need to look like in CA to get the same money value lol.

Klay Thompson indeed still took the 2nd most shots on the team, although Kuminga had more shots/100 poss. What's painful is that Klay had the worst defensive rating of any main rotation guy and offensively only Wiggins had a worst rating, ouch! But what I really think was the problem with Klay is the fact that he had such a hard time accepting a smaller role. And when he finally got there and was benched, lo and behold: His usage rate, offensive rating and TS% sky rocketed, resulting in a far better net rating. This is giving me hope he can do something similar in Dallas, if he accepts his smaller role. That and the fact that there is no longer a contract negotiation looming that get's him frustrated/distracted.

This is about what the Mavs need. They severely lacked a shooter in the finals. Klay gives them what they were missing. Klay is also a guy that doesn't need the ball, Luka or Kyrie can dribble for 20 seconds and then kick to him for a last second shot. He's just a good fit for the Mavs.

All Dallas want from Klay is a top level 3D catch and shoot guy, which he is, and prbly still the best of that archetype, OK defense but historical shooting, he still shot over 40% on huge volume last year didn't he? What I've noticed with these takes of "Klay is gonna hurt the defense. How's the defense gonna work?" Implying that DJJ was a huge loss defensively, which, yeah, DJJ was very good defensively, but the Mavs defense didn't jump another level because of DJJ. He was a reason, but not THE reason the Mavs was so good defensively. The Mavs have gotten better defensively after they traded for Gafford and PJ. And Luka and Kyrie improving defensively helped the team too, but the causuals or haters will deny, but as someone who watches every Mavs games as much as possible, this was by far Luka year defensively (and Kyrie) that included not being fully healthy in the playoffs. I saw that apparently, the Mavs were the best team that defended the Celtics. The problem wasn't their defense, it was their offense. By no means the Mavs gonna be top 3 defense or whatever, but they're capable of being a top 10 defense because Klay is still a smart defender. It’s not so much overthinking, but the fact that Mavs fans need to temper and fully understand what was happening to Klay last season. The Klay doesn’t have the pressure of 2nd option trope pretty much tells me you didn’t understand. go back and look at Klay’s games from February to the end. He’s not starting as much, he’s being limited to below 30 mpg, and he actually wasn’t quite as streaky as he was before the All-star break. You do not realize how many bad shots the warriors allowed cause they were trying to get him out of a funk. Which given how much frustration THJ faced from Mav’s fans for being streaky makes me worry for Klay. The other issue is talking about offball and screens. That’s not really the Mavs style, but I do hope they improve a lot in that area. I thought after the 22 WCF they would have learned and added more motion/sets. Unfortunately you can see form the finals this year they haven’t improved a lot in adding diversity/adaptability to their offense. I know fans like to complain about the teams perimeter shooting, but equally to blame was Luka/Kyrie allowing themselves to forced into really bad shot selections form the 3.

Luka and Kyrie were good defenders last season. Check Lukas defensive rating last season. I should say, the last few months and playoffs, his defense was good.

They’ll be at least a 3rd seed barring major injuries. They were on a 60 win pace post-trade deadline last season, with these new additions to a post-trade deadline teams that gets to start new…55 wins at least is expected imo

Yeah analyti s say klay was the worst guard on the team last year excluding gp2 and guys that dont play. The word great cannot apply. Dallas has gambled that hes not washed and will bounce ssomewhat back. Helluva gamble. Not sure i liked this one.

Klay Thompson is now just a glorified Seth Curry. He went from a +/- of +165 to +7 in one season. You don't get benched on a mid team if your not washed.

And with Kyrie and Luka they were the best defense in the league to end the season and one of the best defenses in the playoffs. You're just yapping with no substance whatsoever.

People don’t even know it’s NOT JUST KLAY it’s Naji marshmall it’s Grimes it’s Sharpe who is the tallest moving center that’s in the NBA. 7’5 And then KLAY to add the cherry on top we can play any lineup we got three centers who all can move their feet.
