Ditto the Mountbatten and Hicks family. I am in the middle of the Andrew Lownie book on the Mountbatten's. A fascinating read.

Nancy Mitford's "U and non-U" (U being upper-class) rules for society is a fascinating insight into the British aristocracy. The aristocracy's flirtation with fascism was more widespread than many would care to admit.

Yep this definitely isn’t my first time hearing about it

Far more middle class and working class people "flirted" with fascism than aristocracy, why else would the East End be a fascist stronghold in the 30s.
@sararichardson7372 ай бұрын
It was considered smart to be fascist among the upper classes .

Stop. Wait. Did I just hear,a well spoken English narrator, say Durbyshire? Impostor! Something is very very wrong.

I thought the narrator was American. There were several mispronunciations!

I believe a character in the Netflix show Peaky Blinders was based on a Mitford sister, after watching this.
@chelseafine46308 ай бұрын
Yes, I think so too. I had that chat with my husband recently too-as after listening to the Rest is History podcast about both Mosley and Mitford at different times-it makes complete sense at the time that-that series of episodes are set.

Thank you for the video it seems not all aristocrats family are the same. Some of them are willing to challenge the status quo and seek out new ideas. I remember from my online research there was an Chinese philosopher (Confucius, Chinese philosopher) did that too, instead of staying in the imperial court he went to live with the common people to learn from them and seekout a proper leader to be taught his philosophy. .

While several of the sisters had offspring and the family continues to exist, I haven’t seen anywhere where the only son had offspring and he was killed in March 1945 in the war against the Japanese. So it seems that the Mitford name died with him as all the sisters’ children and grandchildren have names reflecting their paternal lineage. Wonder who inherited the father’s barony title?
@NickGreenwoodable2 ай бұрын
It was inherited by his younger brother. The Mitford name is not dead - we now have the sixth Baron Redesdale, Rupert Mitford, who is a Lib Dem peer in the House of Lords.

How interesting that some were drawn to austerity of socialism and exclusion of fascism- I guess when you are born into enormous wealth, brutality and suffering seem quaint.

The aristocracy has always been right wing. Their young may go through a rogue period and affect left wing tendencies, but they always come back into the fold…
