​@@crazydrifter13 you'd have to make the barrel significantly heavier than it currently is, and that might mess up another aspects of the systems engineering due to the additional weight or rigidity of the barrel. Looks like the rate of fire is set so that the barrel has time to return to it's starting position before the next round is fired though, so it's probably not impacting accuracy significantly. Heat would certainly become an issue during sustained firing.

The mounting system has two separate ammo boxes that hold 200 rounds each and a dual feed system for the gun. One ammo box would hold 200 rounds of HEI-T for use against surface targets and the other box would hold 200 rounds of HEP for use against air targets.

The RWS looks a bit jury rigged some covers over the working parts at the rear of the mount and some overall refinement would be nice but at least it has a programmable airburst capability. Dual feed is definitely the way to go if possible for the reasons listed below. Using the Mk44 Bushmaster II with 40×180mm ammunition is a huge improvement over 25mm and 30mm according to the test data that has been compiled since development and testing began on the ammunition. Also when using 40×180mm ammunition the fluted barrel diameter at the muzzle brake end of the barrel needs to be increased so the barrel ends up nearly parallel which reduces the barrel flex. The French and the British went with 40mm case telescoped ammunition for a reason it is the sweet spot for size versus performance and lethality. Supershot 40 which was originally designed in the eighties is a better round than the current CTA ammunition and has the capability to stop large drones and some missles using the programmable airburst capability in the 40×180mm ammunition size if the RWS is accurate enough. So in one feed of the dual feed gun a version of 40×180mm ammunition similar to 3P ammunition could be used with a programmable airburst feature and a physical contact explosive feature as well as an inert non explosive feature, which gives one type of round three distinct capabilities. Also an armour piercing tungsten carbide 40×180mm APFSDS-T or APFSDS round could be used in the other feed of the MK44 Bushmaster II. So in both feeds of the dual feed gun the operator would have virtually every capability needed by using both types of ammunition in both feeds of the one gun. An excellent way to equip an armoured vehicle as every capability needed for all types of targets is met by using only two types of 40×180mm ammunition. So the need to load any other type of specialised round is not required. The performance increase and cost savings when using this type of ammunition and equipment is substantial to say the least. 😎🇦🇺👍
