The amount of influence this channel has is insane. I work at a gun shop and daily we hear people referring to this channel and the information presented here. In addition to knowledge we see purchase trends as well!! Mike released a DMR 308 video and we sold two rigs built out (scope bipod mags ammo) the next day. I assume after this video the DD Mk12 will sell 10% more this month then their projections along with all those who will finally pull the trigger on their mk12 build they’ve been putting off for years. Great stuff guys. Love your content and appreciate the sales pitch!

11:49 you only need a 1:8 to stabilize ANY 5.56 projectile that you can fire out of the AR. 77gr can potentially stabilize with a 1:9 but that's running on the ragged edge of stability.
@DrewBailey-o3v2 ай бұрын
That is fascinating. I don't know much about twist and weight and all that. But that's pretty cool.
@joearledge12 ай бұрын
@@DrewBailey-o3v basically it's all about bullet length and RPMs. Heavier bullets are longer(usually, odd ball long light bullets exist) because that's the only way to change the weight and keep the diameter. The longest bullet that you can fit into 5.56 brass and still fit it in the magazine is 1.125". For RPMs twist rate and velocity matter. Faster on either one, and RPMs increase. Too little RPM and it's like a 5 year old throwing a football, tumbling all over the place. Too much RPM and it's like a tire or washing machine out of balance, the bullet is stable, but it's dancing all over the place in flight, so precision suffers. This is because bullets spin around 200,000 to 400,000 RPMs, depending on twist and velocity. No bullet is perfect, the copper jacket might be a tiny hair thicker or thinner in 1 section, the lead core might get swaged into the jacket unevenly or have air pockets in the lead. These can cause the bullet to have asymmetrical weight distribution like a tire out of balance. If you try to add more stuff to the bullet(steel tip in M855, AP cores, Tracers, Incendiary, ect...) that's 1 more thing that has to be perfectly centered on the axis of the bullet, or else it's the out of balance washer jumping all over the place. 1:7 twist in this context has a habbit of highlighting the flaws in the bullets, though it's still good enough for 90% of people 90% of the time. 1:9 you run the risk of the 5 year old throwing the football if your velocity is too slow to stabilize it. 1:8 is the perfect Sweet spot for 5.56 ARs.

The ocm5 is the best. mod0/mod1 for sure! If you're trying to be more clone correct the mod0 is easier since you don't have to spend $1000+ on a rail that retails for less than half that. The pri stuff is still actually produced in decent quantity and you can also just get a complete PRI upper

I went back and forth between the Mod 0 and the Mod H. I ultimately chose the Mod H and have never second-guessed that decision. The 18-inch barrel of the Mod 0 can give you a bit more velocity, but it doesn’t provide a significant gain in performance at extended ranges. Just plug the data into a ballistic calculator and take a look. I can routinely make first-round hits out to 900 meters on E-type/IPSC targets (though I am shooting at pretty high altitude). I have the same suppressor too, and when it’s attached, the shorter barrel really helps balance the rifle. You really can’t go wrong with either option; that’s just my two cents.

@@TheMikeshannon The KAC rails have actually dropped in price quite a bit. There was a drop recently and have seen them numerous places for $400-$500 new. Definitely a breath of fresh air! Was a tough choice between Mod 0 and Mod 1 but I ended up with a Centurion Arms Mod 1

I would like add that 77gr will carry long ways without any problems related to subsonic flight. I dope few times a year my 16" out to 1km / 1100yds and the kestrel and wind from 800m/880yd target is very linear. It just becomes a lot harder to spot and get the wind holds correct. I have doped sierra 77, lapua 77 and hornady 75 so far. Sticking with 75s for now.

For anyone wondering .... MK is USN / NSW Crane Term they use when adopting Platforms / Systems . MK12 , MK18 , MK19 , MK23 , and MK25 are all USN / NSW Adoptions . The term M like M4 , M4A1 , M27 is what the rest of the Mil uses .

I'm sure you know this but for clarity for anyone that might have been confused, MOA is an angular measurement and hence 1.8 MOA at 300 yards would roughly 5.65" at 300. I think what you meant was 1.8" at 300 yards which is roughly 0.6 MOA or 0.6" at 100 yards.

I was also confused when I heard 1.8 MOA at 300

Its also only 1"/100yards with small arms. Anyone doing long range shots, like artillery, uses 1.047"(iirc) since at 10 miles that .047 adds up.

My friend Dylan was a SDM for his unit in Iraq, and also a gunsmith and FFL in Alaska. He loved the Mk12! He helped me build a lightweight version for coyote and wolf hunting. It was a Cavalry Arms (now defunct company) 1-piece composite lower receiver/stock, upgraded trigger (don’t remember the brand he gave me), M4 upper, custom Krieger 18” stainless barrel free-floated with rifle length gas system, carbon fiber forearm, and detachable bipod. I was using it to spot & stalk and in ground blinds. For weight savings, I used 10 & 20 round magazines (10 rounders in the gun when hiking and stalking and 20 rounders as backup). I knew I wasn’t going to push it past 200 yards, so I opted for a fixed 2.75x vintage Redfield Widefield optic (chosen for reliability and being VERY lightweight). That custom barrel and matched bolt cost as much as the rest of the gun. It was a heavy in the rear to light in the front contour with fluting to reduce weight and give it more surface area (not that barrels stay hot in Alaska!). It was Dylan’s recommendation to go stainless, not only for the accuracy but for rust prevention. And Dylan, being the gunsmith he was, cerakote painted the whole thing. He does great work! The gun, with a loaded 10 round magazine, weighed just over 7 lbs!
