I have owned a 1974 Mk.3.for almost 49 years,(bought it in early 1976 with only 250 miles on the clock!) and it was still like brand new.when I found it sitting in the showroom, I was only 12 years old at the time, but had £900 in my bank account, not quite enough to by it, as it was £1,575 , but I fell in love with the Cortina Mk3 when it was launched in 1970,so I really wanted a brand new one, and in 1976 Ford were going to launch the Mk4, My Mum & Dad both liked the car too, so helped out with the cash and we bought it, and it was used every day, all year round for 25 years, and I drove it once I past my test at the first attempt at age 17, The Ford Cortina Mk.3.is a superb car to own, easy to work on and very reliable, if well serviced an OHC pinto can rack up 300.000 miles, mine and a few others I know of have done. This GXL looks to be a superb example, and having spent £47,000 restoring one of my MK.3's (I own three of them) in my classic car collection, back to. to 100% rust free, Concourse condition buying a really good one like this is the next best thing, and will cost a lot less. Having adored the Mk.3 for 54 years, I loved seeing this one, a great video, and a good attempt at the history apart from saying the basic cars had square headlights, (Series 2 cars) September 1973, on wards had rectangular ones introduced, on the Cortina L ( they were offered as an optional extra), but basic and L Decor models originally came with single round 7" ones as standard, as did the 1970-73 (Series 1) Basic, L, and XL models.(Series 2) XL GT & 2000E had rectangular headlamps as standard, and by 1975 so did the Cortina L, in the UK.just to clear that up for anyone interested. and mint condition Aluminium Arch trims are super rare to find now, and so are missing on this beautiful restored GXL,as they are on several surviving Mk.3's that would of had them fitted from new at the Factory, XL GXL and GT, 2000E models.

This Cortina looks fantastic! Beautifully restored. I remember how much i loved yhat four headlamp grille on the Mark 3 GXL. One of my teachers had one in British Racing Green with a vinyl top that replaced a later Mk 3 that was badly rusted, while one of my bosses later in life said he owned two of these cars in the 1970s. One of my mentors had one he nicknamed Lizzie when i first met him. One car, so many memories!

The Cortina Mk III GXL was my dream car when I was an 11 years old boy in Switzerland in 1971. As a boy I had ordered a catalogue and price list from the Ford Motor Comapany in Switzerland; the price of a GXL was 13'660.00 CHF. My father was driving a Mk II Cortina which was also a great car. Unfortunately, I have not been able to convince him to go for a Mk III GXL.... :-))))

I suppose he bolted it straight in on the original gearbox never needing to update the front springs, radiator clearance the drivers side manifold & did it all in his lunch break. As I was a little boy, there wasn't a street without at least one Taunus Mk1 ( the german Edition of the Cortina Mk3 ). Fitted with Pinto 1.3/1.6 or Cologne V6 2.0/2.3 it was the Soundtrack of the 70s. But Ford never had the Image it has in the UK. So 95 % of these Cars get " driven to exitus " . Surely not the best Car of the 70s - but one of the coolest.

@@davidwardle5 hi 40 years of maintaining, breaking, restoring, collecting MK3 cortinas , I currently own 5 1/2 mk3's & 2 mk5's. I've lost count at circa 40 . Originally they were fitted to all except base models my early 72 ( April build) L EST had them when I bought it in circa 2000, but my mates same month 4dr GT ( which I'm currently restoring)& my yellow 2dr GT also April didn't have them & neither did the 72 4 Dr L my dad bought in 73. Of the first b3 the 4dr GT is earliest with full vents , vertical glove box knob , followed by my EST which has same vents but twist knob, then my 2 Dr with split vents & twist knob. All 3 have the dash handbrake blanking plt. Both GT s have the smaller centre clocks. Mid 72 the GT/GXL gain the bigger centre clocks gauges & lost the blanking plt as the dash handbrake was discontinued along with the bench seat option (base /L 1.3/1.6) the arch trims remained on gxls until late 73:when stocks ran out I presume, they reappeared when the 2000E was introduced. I m rubbish with computers so I'm not sure if you can send pms on KZbin. I don't do social media ( can't be doing with all the bs from keyboard experts but you can contact me through buysellcortina web site were I can bore for England on MK3/4/5 cortinas from around the world.

I had every cortina mk1 1500gt ( looked do fast) was sooo slow, mk2 1600e ( best ever with webasto sunroof), mk3 1600 xl ( gorgeous did 150k still going strong) mk4 1.6gl sooo smooth. Take one any day over modern crap. The gearboxes on these cars were incredible. Remember the song 2468 motorway? My 1600e was used in a pop video, going down the motorway M5 and filming out the sunroof.😂. On an aside my dad had a repair/recovery garage business. He was Ford through and through. The reason I mention this is he had a 1.3gl mk3 cortina as a courtesy car. He bought it smashed up with 60k on. It had the 1300 ohv engine was gutless but once up to speed would waft along but needed revving. He sold it to a prison officer who commuted several times a month from the midlands to the maze prison in NI. It did 300 k being maintained by my father before the dreaded rust got it. It had woeful performance but shows its pedigree. I think the ohc engines made them so much better

Love their style. Especially with the pre-facelift dash. Always wondered how much of the front subframe & suspension was adapted straight from the Pinto (or vice-versa) & glad they still had different styling from their German cousins. Dramatically wider & lower than Mk2, & much of their competition, for a sporty driving position despite sometimes soft springs & dampers & especially suspension bushes as they aged.

That’s a stunning example of a GXL. In period, once a Cortina had reached five or six years of age, it was perfectly normal to see bubbling paint, streaks of rust behind trim, patches of red oxide primer, or they’d had a cheap flashed over respray to make them look good on the used car forecourt. I’ve had two. Both 1600Ls. One a 1972, when I was17 in 1979 with ‘L’ plates, which I spent my spare time filling holes in and touching up with aerosols, and in 1981 a 1976 model, which once bought, I found had been in an accident and the frame was a bit out at the front. After six months I changed it for a 1.8 Marina. That GXL looks so good but cars did not last long then. Re. Ford’s history, there were the ‘Three Graces’ in the 50s which put Ford on the map to some extent, the Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac.

The first of the mk3's your sat in the dash was a copy of the 69/70 mustang before the facelift flat dash. Also the base early version had single round lights not square, all the facelifts had square. The rear axle suspension arrangement was very similar to mustangs from the eighties right up to 04. Where they failed was when the subframe bushes at the front and the void at rear became soft they drove crap. Pinto engine again American motor, people put wrong oil in then the oil feed to the camshaft would block. Had loads and loved them all, down side was you could watch them rust away in front of you. Get a south Africa import with their v6 fitted best car you'll ever have.

Fast-fit companies used to butcher the front cross-members of both Mk3 and Mk4 Cortina when changing the shock-absorbers. If the upper mounting bolt of the shock was seized in the cross-member, the average fast-fit cowboy would burn the bolt out with oxy-acetylene, damaging the cross-member so that a new bolt would never sit properly through it.

When it first came out the Pinto engine was not reliable at all. It had a design fault in the oil feed to the camshaft. A familiar sound in the 70s, was indeed the tapping cam of a Cortina; especially when they also slotted the 1.6 Pinto in the facelift MK3. The engine was otherwise very smooth indeed !

You start talking about a different car and at the same time change the angle on the feature car. Makes me think you’re cutting to the car you’re talking about. So obvious you weren’t alive in the seventies. You only ever got the quad round headlights on a GXL, base models had a single round light, later on rectangular lights were fitted. Best of all, you fell right into the Life on Mars trap, their car was never a GXL, it was a 2000E with a GXL grill and headlights as the dashboard gave it away having g the rectangular instrument panel. Better still, they left the 2000E badge on the C pillar! I had a 2000E in the 1970’s and, a 3.0 litre Capri ll Ghia auto. Also while you were slagging off the Anglia for having vacuum wipers, the mark 2 Cortina continued with them u less you got the 1600E. As for rear wheel drive being old fashioned every one made cars that way including British Leyland, only Austin/Morris were front wheel drive. For 1970’s car knowledge you need to speak to people who were teenagers in the 1970’s because we know that decade very very well.
