Today, we'll take a look at a very fancy pencil, with a few neat tricks and a whole lot of versatility: the Pencil from ModernFuel.

The company drove the price up fifty bucks after the review came out. Horrible practice and it rubs off in a really bad way. As an engineer I’ll just stick with my rotrings

These pencils are now $150 on the website. Definitely not worth it as it's not perfect in the aspects that Nick has mentioned.

If I didn't know you could get a Spoke 4 for $50 I might consider it, but $150 is still ridiculous.

@Steven Zurk For $150, I can buy two, maybe even three high quality pens/pencils from other companies with better QA procedures.

Take a look at the Pentel Kerry from the Japanese market. Not to expensive, all metal construction. What’s unique about it is that it has a cap that you can post and still advance the lead. Very smooth action as well.

I miss my Scripto translucent mechanical pencil from the late 70's... e-Bay sells them for around $12... You weren't Nerdy enough back then unless you had a couple...

Needs a top option for touch screens. Love me some bronze, so there's that. Clip is a deal breaker. Also the Big Idea Design Arto will take any lead size up 2mm (as well as any pen refill) because it uses a twist collet Chuck. And is 30 bucks cheaper in Ti.
@The_Great_Whodini3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I found a bit ago the Pentel P205 and I will never go back to a wooden pencil. It is such an affordable and reliable option. I am not kidding when I say I literally have a dozen of them between my desk, car, and packs.

.9 mm for the win! I love mechanical pencils as I'm a woodworker. I'd love this. But I can't see paying $100.

Check out the Spoke 4 mechanical pencil. If it's in stock, you can get a custom color and material selection with a size of your choice for ~$50. I think they're a wayyy better deal.

I remember this kind of pencil when i was a kid, but made of plastic 30 years ago and the price was around 5 dollars so 100 for this honestly seems way way over price
@laelsorensen7783 жыл бұрын
Cost not simply measured in cash outlay at purchase. That old (still around) favorite was/is plastic. For folks choosing more biodegradable/sustainable products, metals may be preferable. Moreover, unlike the beautiful Graphgear 1000, the innards are swappable. One pen, many guts will be attractive to many.
@warthief34013 жыл бұрын

Just bought one in titanium. I like how the pencil’s mechanical is simple & intuitive. I bought a metal mechanical pencil from a different brand for my daughter last year and the mechanical movement is so dumb with the side slide lever to push out the lead.

That is Nick's fault, he said it was a more expensive looking pen without the clip. So they removed the clip and increased the price by $50.
@bryanyeso49653 жыл бұрын
I was in at $100, and that extra $50 would have covered accessories, since you can't just buy one in .9. I don't know if I want to swing $200ish (including accessories).

I really don't think the swappable mechanisms makes much sense, at least how you're spinning it. The sort of people that go back and forth between different lead sizes and grades just keep multiple pencils on hand, usually with a little mechanism to indicate which one is which. For the current price these are going for you could get 7 Rotring 600s, 5 Rotring 800s, 30 P205s, so-on, which would be universally better for drawing and drafting. Still a nice pencil, and a great review, it's just that nothing about this pencil really targets practicality or functionality, even in the context of fancy stuff.

Nice looking pencil, a little over priced. Great review 👏
@Paras123Shah3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it is a bargain for the quality of materials and workmanship that you are getting. The price has gone up by $50 approx. since the review but still very competitive. Have a look at a Montblanc Le Grand pencil and you will see what overpriced looks like *wink*.
@Jezus423 жыл бұрын
Drafting tables have a place for your pens and pencils. They are often steep enough to not hold anything, also engineers and architects use computers these days.
@caramelzappa3 жыл бұрын
FYI the prices and some of the info is no longer true. $150 for all metals but titanium which is $200, and there's no options for different pencil leds. 0.7mm out of the box and while there is a reference to different leds as an accessory, the accessory itself is not listed anywhere for sale.

As an adult who doesn't have a job that requires a pencil such as an architect or wood worker I find myself only using pens in life. I stopped using pencils once I graduated college as I'm sure most people are the same way. I'm only here because I enjoy torturing myself and looking at things I can't afford.

Things you did not cover: how well the included eraser works. IMO a black eraser will smear. Also: the availability of replacement erasers. Too many mechanical pencil makers make finding replacement erasers impossible.

i've replaced my graphgear 3-4 times due to the plastic internal breaking. i'm worried about the rotring tip if i go that route since i carry my pencil around in my pocket all the time. if i want something that will last..i think this one may be the answer. but it's now 150 bucks and not 99 bucks.
@shawnpepin78903 жыл бұрын
100 bucks for a pencil?? 20 bucks for a hex screw??? at this price they should come with all those accesories included, and its still hard to justify...especially since your going to loose it.. and also, needing a hex driver to add lead??? im sure they could have come up with a better, finger loosening way to seal the end

Yeah....Nah, nice piece but bit too costly for a pencil for me (also partial to the Pentel mechanism)......just like 0.5mm/HB is not for me (I find 0.7mm/2B - more suited for field note taking and navigation), and I'm not too sure anyone would be changing out the internals that often, thanks for the review

The product is beautiful but the company fails to provide instructions as to how to replace the lead. It cannot be figured out. I have emailed the company over and over and over. I typically get a polite reply about a week later, but so far they have never bothered to answer my question and explain how to put new lead in. I wish I had not wasted money on this.

my biggest issue with buying "made in america", is that most of these companies charge just too much for their products. its like they think just because its made in america, they can just double or triple the price of the product and generally its no better quality than overseas. id love to support more american made products, but im not paying double or triple just to line an americans pocket. provide a realistic price (not just because its made in usa) for the product and i will happily support you. they are still asking $150...no thanks.
