The second lecture in the series explores the basics of Grammar as studied by the ancient Greek and Romans. *I said Mencius is hilarious but he is mostly witty and sardonic. I meant Chuang-Tzu.

Love to hear you talk about the Iliad Wes! I'd certainly be interested in an in depth lecture on it from you! Stoked for the new series!

Big fan of yours. Got into your recordings from their live nature, like a live album from a band. I know the "production" 😆 is likely incidental but I'm still a fan. Like a music fan drawn into the crackly vinyl sounds, but, "Bro, you've GOT to listen to the lyrics." 😂

I looked up Great Books Foundation courses in my area because of this lecture.

It's sad that so many students are exposed to Classics in such a poor manner. I remember being expected to understand Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (in its original edition) within two weeks. It's incumbent on teachers to be comparable in excellence to the material they present if they expect any students to absorb it.

If you're not reading the work in the original language, what are you reading exactly?
@klosnj113 ай бұрын
You are reading an interpretation of the original. This has some problems, but also some interesting possibilities, especially when multiple versionas are available that one can cross reference. I had my 5th grader doing this with cross-referencing two different translations of Grimms Farie Tales. She though it was pretty cool. When there is only one version, that can be a bit frustrating, but if you also have access to the original, you can try to translate bits yourself using google translate or a dictionary. A tedious thing, but still fascinating.

If you are reading people so far removed from your own experience, don't you run the risk cf completely misunderstanding them without even realizing it.

That’s where careful scholarship comes in, and a certain amount of humility for your interpretations

You might completely misunderstand yourself, which makes the rest moot. Just try.
