I don't play DotA2 (I played DotA years ago). I watched TI because I enjoyed the OG story from last year. I wanted to see an explanation as to why Io carry was so surprising and the mechanics behind what made it so impressive. All you kept repeating is saying it's dangerous, Ana is amazing and everyone being surprised by the pick. You don't actually explain anything. If you did, I skipped over it because you just kept rambling about nothing. Next time you make a video, try making a plan about what you're trying to explain rather than figuring out ways to make the video last longer than 10 minutes. Talk about mechanics, synergies, calculations, power spikes, specific impressive plays, etc. This was awful.

The reason the strategy was so successful was because a lot of changes had been made to the hero in a couple different patches that eventually made this strategy viable. Those changes were his talents (lvl 10 spirits slow and lvl 15 2x spirit damage). Then right before TI9 they added an scepter upgrade to io that made spirits spawn passively every second around him instead of being an active with a cooldown. Basically even tho io doesn’t out farm other carries all needed was lvl 15 plus scepter then he could win fights against enemies carries even if they had a higher net worth than him. I think that’s the reason the hero was broken and amazing job by Ana to discover this as most players would never even try a start like that especially at TI.

If you still wondering, IO is mostly pure support hero that depend on other hero to be useful, but ana decided to play it as a carry role that didn't depend on other hero with lvl 10 and lvl 15 talent plus aghanim sceptre, at that point IO was dangerous enough but not many can achieve that lvl 15 + agh in short time like ana did, if IO farmed too long the enemy carry would become too hard to handle because the lack of pos 1 hero in ur team at early to mid game, that's why ana IO is considerably scary he lost 0 IO game at TI9 and he have total point of 48-8 in his recent game as IO, and what more terrifying is when he reach lvl 25 like we see in video it just impossible to win the game at that time, also the moment liquid decided not to ban IO at grand finale is the moment everybody know that liquid just gave up the aegis of champion.

​While what Nolan said this is a big part of why carry Io was so good at TI and Ana's Io being downright OP it also had a lot to do with OG's in your face hyper aggressive play style giving Ana the time and space he needed especially with the way Topson play's mid and his ability to create space for Ana paired with their knowledge and abuse of item/level timings. I highly doubt carry Io would have been anywhere near as good in slower paced games or slower meta.

Not exactly. If the hero's abilities and features prevent him from being a carry, you cannot make a carry from that hero. With the Overcharge ability, IO is a hero with carry potential. The best example of this is Dazzle. There was no concept called carry Dazzle in the past. Because his abilities and skill tree were not suitable for this. At the same time CM. He didn't have a feature that gave +200 attack speed in the past. Icefrog now gives many support heroes the opportunity to be a carry. Another example is AA's new aghanim. The list goes on and on.

Esentially the idea of Io carry was possible because the game changed the components of dominator(gloves of haste added to it), benefitting io with the theter neutral creep dominated and the change of the aganimh scepter to Io with the spirits unlimited was so powerful to that hero plus gyro + Io line up or bristleback fits very well.

The real reason why Io carry was so strong was because of its early power spike with the slow on spirits + lv 15 damage talent on spirits + aghs which lets io have a permanent supply of spirits. Sure the level 25 talent was strong, but those clips happened after OG turned around the game in the mid-game with the Io power spike. This is also why Valve nerfed Io so hard after TI, moving the spirits damage talent from lv 15 to lv 20 and moving spirits' innate on-hit slow into a talent and then eventually removing the slow altogether. Basically, once Io gets lv15 and aghs, he becomes a huge source of damage and slow that is too hard to counter early game, making it super easy to just snowball. As long as OG can create enough space for ana to get there in time, they had a good chance at winning.

@@lbntapash7947 What do you mean it's not that strong? mention another hero that has 155-775 damage per second with zero mana or health cost, has initiation, escape and is durable. Alright, now here's the real explanation from a theoretical standpoint. Io carry hit power spike at level 15 and have aghs back then, why? because you have 80% slow and 155 damage on 360 radius aoe per second (it was actually every 0.8 second, the tooltip is not accurate, but free game no bitching). Let's put that into perspective, at level 15, most heroes are at, say, 1800 hp if they're doing well, magic resist is around 25%, this means io only need about 15 seconds to kill most heroes, even if they regen, it probably only adds 2-3 seconds, and that's just from spirit damage. And don't forget that 360 radius is actually quite big, it's really easy to hit 2-3 heroes at the same time. Also, consider damage/mana cost of a skill, this was also the reason why CM was a good support in 7.18, her crystal nova was a 1.3/1, which in a dual lane should always be a 2.6/1. Now imagine a 155/0 skill that also CC your enemies to ensure the constant 155/0 to hit until they die. Now, just like CM, she could hit 2 people in a dual lane right? You know where this is going, in a fight against 2 heroes, the skill becomes a 310/0 dps, against 3 heroes it becomes a 465/0 dps and so on, which is crazy good. Of course this is all assuming you're a good player that can hit multiple units in a single explosion, but I'd imagine a TI champion is a good player. Now, this is all just about damage, you can't deal damage if you're dead. But luckily, Io is durable and have an escape mechanism in the form of tether and relocate. Okay, what about initiation, also tether and relocate. So, io was just a support before the aghs update because it was lacking in terms of damage, the aghs give it an infinite amount of damage which solves that problem. Basically, Io carry was good because when you hit level 15 and have aghs, you become an infinite source of damage that also CC your enemies to ensure that infinite amount of damage hits until it kills your enemies. Oh, you also have initiation, escape and durability.

@@thebluestyx your explanation was perfect forthe damage part. I would add a few things to this. Io has an excellent interaction with Helm of the Dominator. Using a dominator creep with no boots to rapidly farm jungle to keep up with another freefarming carry was incredibly innovative and wasn't widely utilized at all. The next thing people don't lend enough credit to is the factthat the damage is happening even if you crowd control Io. So there isn't a good way to deal with the hero in fights unless you can instantly kill it. And that's where the team comps featured chen, sd, and other saving heroes or heros that cannot be ingored for too long (bristle, tiny, wr). The final thing ill bring up is the ultimate. Creative use of the ulti was seen, but it's power is that it can act like a better Spec ult in quite a few cases. He can join fights as soon as he is 6 and when he survives he is right back to his farming position. He can save people in fights going bad. He can buy back and get right back into the fight for a reasonable duration. Io was a better Spec in a lot of ways. Because it lends itself way more to teamwork and utility and much earlier than spec with more range and better CC. The only thing was the mitigation, which didnt matter much because the range, CC and damage was way way higher than spec way earlier in the game. Now it is gone. But the fact that they innovated this at the biggest tourney in their sport is miraculous. And it is genuinely one of the most incredible innovations I have seen in any sport.

In dota1 when IO is released, IO is a core hero totally.. Its just happened that in Dota2, hero metas are shifted.. For ex., heroes that didnt use commonly in Dota1, gets the high meta on Dota2.. Same as how IO became a core to support and back to core now bcos of Ana gameplay

vincent torres its like how they use BH and Riki as support in dota 2 when they dominate as core in dota 1. Guardian Wisp also plays Io as core all the time.

actually carry IO is not new on this game it was introduce few years ago with the dagger E-blade and dagon it was called the IO bomb making the orb closer to kill an opponent instant just like morph. and some high rank players play IO as a carry a true hitting carry with armlet to maximize the damage... but now why IO carry becomes more a new meta its all because of the scepter that making his orb spawn every time they hit to enemy and that was a 80 magic damage per orb. they pick IO to combo with his team like gyro and WR to combo with his talent then there is Bristle that really benefits to over charge and heals because "Heart" by ana's item and IO really benefits of farm and exp it means OG.ana did his homework because no will ever expect that kind of pick no one will gonna counter that kind of strategy.

It had nothing to do with his talent nor scepter. It's simply his buff and using your allies as a tank. IO is a walking fountain if you use it properly, that converts to doing more damage cause 2 hero live longer. Your regeneration, including lifesteal, is shared by linking to your allies. As long as your alive, your allies stays alive. This means more time to do damage. Back then people even build madness and critical on IO. Critical do lifesteal, which then leads to more healing to your tank.

@@mvpmikey bro you are so wrong on this in different levels. It has everything to do with io aghs and talents. If it was as you said, then io would still be a viable support. Io was rarely picked as support anymore due to the nerves. If you looked at how Ana play, he always pick aghs as second item, and the wisp damage talent at level 15. ALWAYS.

@@outsidethebox262 Those are just consolation prize for getting levels. IO carry is played the same exact way with or without scepter/talent. Talent and Scepter did not exist before, and he was played the same exact way. I simply explained the logic in it. Calling people wrong when you can't explain the hero. All you did was say your favorite idol is cool and he wears a blue shirt, so you're wearing a blue shirt cause that makes you cool. That does not prove nor disprove anything. IO carry is about his Tether spell interaction with Items. His heals, also heals allies. You can stay max rage, not be targeted, and heal your allies with an unbreakable Pots. That is enough to make that allie a raid boss Tank. Scepter or not, his already a carry with just Pots worth 100 gold. This is the reason why IO is one of the least picked hero since people don't fully understand how his spells work. Dota 2 players just do things without knowing why their doing it, as a result their bad at it. Dota 2 player do not attach logic to anything they say. They can't even explain why items/hero are picked. They pick those things, because their favorite idol did the same thing. That's just plain Ignorance.

@@mvpmikey IO carry was played without the ags or talent because those things were not there. This is the reason why IO carry was not even considered in the pro scene. It was not reliable. This talent and aghs enabled io to inflict damage while running from/to opponents constantly. Even matumbaman told interviewers he would ban io because the talent and the orbs hurt. I wouldn't say io other skills are useless, but nobody should argue otherwise that this talent and aghs is the one that propel ana to use io as a reliable carry in this patch. And its not consolation prize for getting levels, IO winrate in this scene and the way OG lets IO farm dictates the fact that IO had to get that aghs and talent is crucial. And in every game, once IO was set with these things, eveything turned around.

Mate Rancz but Io was kinda new to the meta that time, it's normal on a new hero to be played in mid after all Dendi played it in an orthodox way which is a support from the beginning to end. Funn1k Razor offlane carried that whole game.

I don't wanna be a dick and all but shifts of roles always happens. IO isn't the only one who was played as a carry support , or a carry being used as a support. It's all in the update and how they could work and couldn't. For example bounty hunter was shifting to support then carry then back to support long before dota 2 was even out. Riki was once used as a support as well once in an update.

Anything is possible is dota. Support heroes being used as carry are prevalent during dota 1. They just introduced the roles to make it more understandable to new players.

It actually made more people misunderstand the game. People can't differentiate PoS from Role. They also label heroes with roles/pos which don't really make much sense. Power Spike and Counters changes Roles mid game. Pos also changes based on the power spike of every heroes.
