Lmao people really act like athletes don't get paid. Ok, here is what students get now - $200,000 education (if they choose it) - Between $1,000-$5,000 dollars as a stipend (Each school is different but can offer up to $5,000 according to NCAA rules) - Free housing - Free meals - Free clothes/gear - Free tutoring, books, school supplies etc. All of this is free for student-athletes. People who really want student-athletes to be paid are simply uninformed and ignorant about how the NCAA and collegiate athletics works. In 2014, the NCAA did a study and found out that all but 20 schools LOST money on collegiate athletics. So, contrary to popular belief, collegiate athletics don't make money. Why is this you may ask? Because all of the schools literally don't make money and have sports just to have sports or because they take all of their revenue and pump it back into the athletic department. But noooooo still pay the kids with nonexistent money. Ok, let's explore that route then. If you begin paying the kids, all students across the nation will have to be paid equally or else this opens Pandora's box with improper benefits. Athletic departments like UMBC aren't even in the same ballpark compared to big Power 5 schools like Ohio State or Alabama. Ok, so lets just say hypothetically that all football players COULD be paid the same and it all worked out. Wellllllll not so fast. Title IX states that there must be equal treatment when it comes to athletes. Everything that the football team gets, the women's tennis team must also get. So hypothetically speaking let's just say that the football team was paid for bringing in a boatload of cash. Well, then every single sports team MUST be paid the same. Title IX works both ways. The softball team and the Men's Basketball team would have to be paid the same despite the men's basketball team most likely bringing in more money for the school. Now because of all of the athletes at each school, the number that each student will be paid is suddenly dwindling because the university just can't shell out a few million here to pay athletes that are given everything they need to succeed in college. Few schools have that kind of money. Lastly, the point of the NCAA is amateur athletics. The second anyone gets paid, they lose their amateur status. If people compete in sports with Olympic counterparts (swimming, track, wrestling, etc) they would all lose their amateur status. Losing their amateur status would disqualify them for the Olympics. For most sports, the Olympics is all there is after school. There is no pro gymnastics league or pro softball league. Even if there is/was, the players would not get paid nearly enough to make a living off of it. Paying athletes sounds like a good idea, but it just simply is not possible.

I have an issue with them touting "national exposure" a bonus. If the NCAA didn't have a monopoly on players entering their professional athletic careers, the highly talented would still be gaining recognition in whatever arena they were playing in. But because they've asserted their supremacy as the source for "elite" talent in America, they can boast that their participants become stars before they ever sign a professional contract. I hope that this changes in years to come. Mandating that all players looking to enter the NBA or NFL must go through the same process, earning bogus scholarships for diplomas they'll never use, in the name of the unassailable "student athlete," is just propagating a system that benefits an elite few - namely the rich alumni classes of prestigious colleges, tv executives, and NCAA officials. They don't care about the students, unless they're winning titles. And even then, there's no guarantee that they'll go on to become successful professionals at the next level. It's criminal that these young men and women are giving up everything in their prime years for the promise of "national recognition," all while someone else profits off the name on the back of your jersey.

It's a weird system... In most countries academics and atheletics are separated. What does basketball have to do with academics? In europe athletes go to Sport clubs junior teams to practice and play and possibly go pro around high school/college age
@karmicobsession16365 жыл бұрын
Most sports are attached to academics in the US. But most of the best athletes playing, also play on club teams.

I agree with guys taking money from boosters and under the table or whoever cause the NCAA care nothing about these athletes and half that money need to go to the players of whatever sport that brought the revenue in.

The idea that these players get more fame by getting more exposure is true of those who actually make it to the NBA and garner serious contracts over at least 4 to 7 years. But what of those who don't? What of those who do great in college, but never do so in the NBA? March Madness is absolute money madness. And it's robbery no matter how you square it. And the players are all stupid for going for it.

@@Decius. I cannot a accept that reasoning. It matters not that they get an education. It's not to say it has no value or deep, genuine and serious value. The price for college is between $100 and $360K depending on your goals. In that four to 13 years - again depending on what they are going for; let's just do 4 years instead: In the four years a LeBron James level player plays through the March Madness, he has earned the college over 8.3 billion dollars. If you were to put that in percentage points, such a player easily commands more than 20 million dollars from his participation alone. There is no comparison. It's pretty much no different than a key employee producing ideas and sales that actually bring into his employer's coffins hundreds of millions of dollars, but doesn't get a decent share in that money - $560K a year with a bonus of $100,000. That's not fair at all. If coaches can command $5 million dollars, the players can at the most garner 3 x that. And that's just the ones who never make it to the NBA or do and gain no super contracts. It's hit and miss in such sports. Paying them is more than fair. I can't support College Basketball for that reason.
@Decius.5 жыл бұрын
@@jirensentry7609 Did you read what I said? It has nothing to do with the players getting educated it has to do with the normal students paying for the 20 basketball players salaries. Coaches get paid because they bring millions to the college, and because its their job, Zion's job is to be a student. I understand it's risky to be banking that much on athletics, but thats a risk their willing to take.

Watchman On the Wall The players would still go to the NBA because the money would be more and because it’s their lifelong dream. It's so simple, it's stupid. Just let the program profit money off of their own brand. Which means only selling Duke merchandise with no player's names or jersey numbers. And on the other hand, let the player make money off of their own name with no association to the school. So, a player like Zion can sign a shoe deal or get paid to make appearances, as long as it has no association with Duke basketball.
