You just said you didn’t have to pay for school but I bet you also didn’t have 40+ hours of mentally and physically taxing labor while also having to pass. And no not all players get to cheat. College in the 2010's is a requirement for a living wage career. So, just like K-12, college should be free. And just like high school, sports should help pay for the free college. When it comes down to the American school system our K-12 education is behind that of many other first world countries. American youths need an associates to compete in the world market. If we continue the debt train for higher education, it should be interest free loans. By having a a higher education, youths can drive American economic growth and help dismantle the system of economic disparity; moreover, educated peoples pay back society with there works. Why are these banks allowed to increase the cost of getting a higher education with interest? Why does the American government allow banks to hinder economic growth, innovation, and to promote economic disparity? Does that not sound like a Russian terrorist plot to you? Indeed, free college would still need a system in place to fund it; and, such a system would be many years in the making. However; if the government levied the power of banking, they could hand out student loans to qualifying students. The pool of money that would be set aside to do so could gain interest that could keep the pot growing. It would be expensive to start; but, I thing that interest free loans for students would be the most sustainable way to fund peoples ambitions for achieving a higher education. Allow schools to set aside funds for the student athletes, at the end of their career in college sports pay them the set aside money. The amount of money can be small as long as it accounts for the long period of time students commit to college sports. The problem with apportioning money to the most effective players is that it’s a self-repeating cycle, where those players who have a ‘full time job’ can nearly completely abandon their school career. Whereas, other athletes have to focus on school. Also, how do you judge the effectiveness of a defensive lineman? There would be no fair system to apportion money to athletes proportionally without unfairly being biased by offensive players and bigger names, which get more scoring/stat sheet opportunities.

Working at a university I can tell you why. each program on campus has o pay for itself. So on my campus, men’s basketball pays for all the other sports programs, men and women. Personally I don’t think sports should be on college campuses. It helps out about 100 people, but takes by far the largest land mass, utilities, and required “activity fees” that put the rest of the students in debt, to fund a sports training camp.

The majority of revenue generated in NCAA is from a handful of schools. The graph in the video showed that the top 10 schools averaged about 144 million dollars in revenue each year, the video reported that NCAA is now generating 1 billion dollars of revenue, there are 250 universities in division 1 athletics. Everyone is looking at the revenue generated from the university of Texas, not the revenue generated from New Mexico State university.

There are 480,000 athletes and if you include staff and volunteers that makes NCAA possible, that number goes to more than 3 million people. 1 billion divided by 480000 = 2000 dollars 1 billion divided by 3 million = 300 dollars So you would get anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per season if it was distributed more evenly. I believe college athletes should be able to receive endorsement deals and money from sponsors (from coaches, higher-ups, etc). If there’s a will, there’s a way. It’ll take time. NCAA has always been about profiting and they use education as some scapegoat. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I do think that NCAA athletes have way more going for them though. Their potential is sky high. Honestly paying college students would lead to the regular college student to be paying the athlete. If you think student loan crisis is bad now, it’ll be way worse then. I don’t think college athletes deserve a paycheck, they get free tuition, room and board, books, and meals. They finish school debt free in a society where that’s becoming more and more unlikely. Now, I say all that to say this. While I don’t believe every athlete deserves a paycheck, I do believe they should be paid a percentage for their likeness. I believe that college athletes do get paid in some ways. Scholarship money and special benefits are already received by many athletes at different schools. Since many athletes get full rides, or partial scholarship, it is essentially like they are receiving compensation to cover expenses for their schooling to participate in a collegiate sport. This is already more compensation than most college students receive in the first place. If they can receive a free education and degree while playing a sport that they most likely enjoy playing anyways, then they should not need to be compensated with a salary. It could be thought as an unpaid internship, where they can look at the opportunity to play a sport in college can get them a degree, and also prepare them to go professional one day where they will get paid. Either way, scholarships can get them a free education. They should not be paid a salary for playing a sport in college, but scholarships and other benefits need to be provided for their hard work and time spent in practices, games and work outs.

I completely agree, especially for big name schools. Some of the football players at my school get their food and housing provided for them, scholarship money, and lots of clothes and other gear all just for being on the team. While they may not directly receive money to spend on whatever they want, they do have many things provided for them that help them save their own money. I do think some of them may be given a little too much sometimes, but overall they do deserve at least some of what they are receiving.

Maybe payment in the form of an annuity or a retirement plan. Maybe some kind of semester bonus to more than cover the cost of living and expenses and give them some spending money. I’m torn on this one. Because yeah. The cost of a 4+ year college can be off the charts. So if they’re getting full rides that’s awesome. No student debt when they finish! It’s a amazing that Muir who makes money reporting on athletes does not think the athlete he reports on should not be paid.. not very bright and the AD from Stanford who also gets paid for managing athletes does not want them to be paid but gets a bump in his salary when Stanford football wins not rowing. No one would accept these terms in their employment but they want these kids shame on the adults. Most Universities are Government institutions and subject to federal and state laws. Under law amateur athletes are not allowed to be paid. It is that simple. Most are supported with educational incentive. I had a four year scholarship for athletics and I was paid with room and board, free schooling, extra tutoring, job help, and clothing from the school and its agencies.

Thats disgusting when NCAA is making $1 Billion in revenue. I feel like they should be able to sell autographs, sign endorsements, etc. but paying them is not a good idea. Only a handful of schools could afford to pay their student athletes and it would most likely only be for two sports. These athletes get a free education, free meals, free trips across the country, and many other benefits. That is more than enough for the majority of college athletes. High school players play for the love of the game, if you don’t want to do that don’t play.

A couple things: College athletes are CHOOSING to play sports and this CHOICE has positive and negative drawbacks. The good: get partial to full college tuition covered while still having the opportunity to get a degree, um $15-$50k/yr IS a salary. The bad: have to work harder to achieve high level of success in both academics & sports (how is working harder bad when you are getting to do what you love?). Every choice someone makes has to assess the trade-offs. If students WANT to play sports and get tuition covered to do so, they also have to assess whether the potential hit in GPA is worth it. For the players going professional, it is often worth leaving school a year early to sign with a team, and that is their choice to make. Sorry, but I completely disagree with this video's attempts to make a case for student athletes to make some 'real' money... because often, they already are via their educational opportunities. Look at minor league players- often barely scrape by and may never make it big. They additionally may not choose to get a college education, and certainly don't have a direct opportunity to do so while tied to their minor league careers. College students are already often times paid [tuition costs] more than these players who also are potentially more talented individuals. Minor league players sign contracts just as collegiate athletes do. Is everyone forgetting the 'free' hype and advertising a player gets by being put on film or the cover of a game? Maybe the NCAA should charge the player for being their agent. I fail to see how college athletes have a leg to stand on here.

Pay in room and board. All athletes are guaranteed food and shelter, you can also throw in textbooks cause those are the other big expense. Then they should be allowed to make money off their images, autographs, jerseys, appearances etc. And then you also have strict rules on academic eligibility that is regulated by some government entity so that schools don’t try and cheat the system with “paper classes”. Food and lodging is always the biggest expense and the image income is icing on the cake. Also throw in limitations on how much time can be spent in practice, they’re students first and should never spend more time playing sports than studying and in class

I think a pay the players model really looks like is make sure they aren’t homeless, make sure they aren’t starving and without food of nutritional value. Allow them to get scholarships and make a small percentage off jerseys. Basically they have to market themselves. I understand that there isn’t enough money. I had a friend whos family owned the best tailoring shop in town. All of the collage athletes who shopped there had their purchases (including $1,000 suits) put on the Collages tab. New cars (that were H.S. graduation presents from their parents). Off campus rent paid. My grandmother was a hostess at an exclusive restaurant where they just signed for the meals and it was billed to the Collage. And who knows what they get from the Alumni Associations? And , of course, all tuition and living costs paid.

Of course they deserve to be paid, but they will never be paid. The billions they generate in revenue is already committed elsewhere. It's not about convincing people of the morality of paying players, it's about convincing powerful stakeholders to give up their slice of the pie. Only 2 NCAA sports actually make a profit men's basketball and football (there is no women's football). Soccer, lacrosse, baseball, gymnastics, skating, skiing, water polo, hockey, wrestling, track and field, etc. All NCAA sports with male and female counterparts lose money. The costs of operating these sports is more than the revenue they bring in. There are only 2 sports in the NCAA portfolio that generate profits. Men's basketball and football. Men's baseball doesn't earn more than it costs because elite baseball prospects are drafted out if Highschool and join a mlb club's farm system. College baseball is full of 2nd rate prospects. The money these 2 sports earn is used to finance coaches salaries, libraries, science labs, research facilities, university dormitories, research grants, etc. Also the NCAA uses the profits from football and men's basketball to cover the costs of operating other sports and their female version. Lots of people will lose out if the players are paid anywhere close to what they deserve. Eg. The reason the us women's national soccer team is a global powerhouse is because NCAA men's basketball and football players are not paid. The us men's soccer team is a joke compared to the status of the women's team in comparison to their international competition. Internationally men's soccer is extremely commercially viable and profitable. Major soccer clubs find and recruit teen and preteen boys into their soccer academies and invest in their development and training, because the back end profits are so massive this makes economic sense. Smaller soccer academies and clubs will develop elite talent and literally sell them off to larger clubs. There is a whole economic model for develop male soccer talent in Europe. Internationally women's soccer has no where near as much profitability and thus there is no economic reason to develop female players. This gives American women a far less competitive field to play against. Further because title 9 forces universities to offer equivalent programs for women that they offer males, American women soccer players have an avenue for development that women in other countries do not. If men's basketball and football players were paid the millions they deserve to be paid, the NCAA could not operate sports like soccer that have no market viability in the us. Oh and by the way if we are being hones all of the elite players are being paid under the table by boosters and bagmen. It's just six figures is nowhere close to their value.

Also, if you start paying players, don't whine when they're dismissed after they get injured. They'd be employees, not students.
