Tip: The shifts tend to go in the direction your palm faces. Whenever I'm doing an upshift (other than a 1-2) as a LHD driver, my thumb points downward (palm facing away from driver) so I don't miss it. I'd rather miss high than miss low. I've never seen this tip mentioned in any manual driving KZbin video.

A nice, succinct way to summarize this habit (that I'd never heard before). Every time I see one of these videos, I get paranoid that I'll slip up on a track day and have this happen to me, but I think my muscle memory is already set to what you describe--doesn't mean I'd be infallible, but hopefully I can worry a bit less and not make this mistake.

@smlfrd
@smlfrd 3 жыл бұрын
@@Celinestu333 Sure. As a mechanical engineer having worked for multiple OE's and OEM's hopefully my advice isn't shrugged at, but each to their own of course. Every person's body is different, but for optimal operation, your forearm should be as close to perpendicular to the shifter as possible (thus generally parallel to your transmission tunnel). ie: your fist should be at the same height as your elbow. If not achievable, you're better off with the shifter lower rather than higher. This addresses the height of the shifter placement/configuration. For the longitudinal position of the shifter, you don't want your elbow to extend behind your mid-section. This is for multiple reasons but the primary for myself and lots of people I have worked with is it's far more comfortable to extend your elbow/arm forward rather than backward. There's just far more flexibility and thus reach with your shoulder blade (reaching forward) rather than the front of your shoulder/chest (moving your arm back). You may not notice after just a few shifts on the street but do it for hours on end or under pressure like on the track and you will make far more mistakes if you're not driving within these parameters. Ergonomics aren't really something we focus on when we modify our own cars but in the OE space it's critical.

I know this video is pretty old, but 2 things caused that: 1: The shifter extension. It is too high, which causes you to have a bad grip, see point 2: 2: Your grip. You need to get into the habit of gripping the shifter specifically for each shift, in such a way that it forces the right shift each time. For example: From 1st to 2nd, palm against the right side of the shifter (like how you money shifted). 2nd to 3rd, palm directly behind the shifter, push straight up, it will naturally cross the gate to 3rd. 3rd to 4th, palm on top, push straight back. 4th to 5th, palm the left side of the shifter. Reverse this for downshifts. Many people have a habit of grabbing the shifter on top, or wrapping their fingers around it the same way for every shift, and relying on muscle movement to force the stick in the right direction. If you simply palm it correctly, you dont need to direct the shifter, as it will naturally go the intended route.

Literally stiff ass springs and the only sketchy shift becomes 4th to 5th but just ride the gate and your good. 3rd to 2nd is also sketch but won't do too much harm at all if you do mess it up, probably stall as it'll go into 4th most likely.

If it's left hand drive you can grab the shifter like that. Right hand drive I'm not sure. 🤑

Its so scary because its such an easy mistake to make. As soon as I saw that long high g right hander I knew thatd be the money shift. I almost did this once on a racetrack with a crowned straight-away. Fortunately I was in an Rx-7 and it didnt overrevv but damn, scary...

Man this sounded way too similar to the time time I smoked a full built NA D16Z6. The clattering of the valves pin balling in the cylinders is a sound like no other lol I even had some small metal chunks sitting inside the muffler tip. Have yet to make that mistake again, knock on wood. Hope I never do. It was heartbreaking.

Did this once many years ago. I was out dragging in the middle of a very cold night, maybe about 1:30 am. Wound it up tight, hit second, exploded the cluster gear. Had to walk about a half mile to call my dad... he was not happy to be woken up by his stupid son to come pull my car home.

Haha, shit happens... we can only learn not to repeat same the mistake in the future. It's been 3 years since the "The money shift" I have since binned the whole stupid gearstick set up and went back to OEM. Rebuilt the whole car, new turbo engine, transmission. Drove the car daily, not mishifted once . *touch wood

For all the years I had my built turbo ep3 living about 6 miles from this track, knockhill Scotland, I never tracked it. This being one of the many reasons I didn’t, can happen to anyone with just a moment’s lapse in concentration. Way more likely to happen in a Honda 😢
